The New Orleans Food System and COVID-19: A Case Study in Strengthening Food System Resiliency to Facilitate Healthy Eating.

Background/Objectives: Policies to promote healthy eating often work through local food systems, which link food supply chains and food environments to individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in national and global supply chains and emphasized the importance of local food systems in meeting community and individual needs. Unfortunately, we know too little about how to shape local food systems. This case study reports the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the New Orleans food system and the subsequent response from the community and local government to strengthen it through

Key Population Hotspots in Nigeria for Targeted HIV Program Planning: Mapping, Validation, and Reconciliation.

BACKGROUND: With the fourth highest HIV burden globally, Nigeria is characterized as having a mixed HIV epidemic with high HIV prevalence among key populations, including female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs. Reliable and accurate mapping of key population hotspots is necessary for strategic placement of services and allocation of limited resources for targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to map and develop a profile for the hotspots of female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs in 7 states of Nigeria to inform HIV p

Lessons learned from supporting local planning for extreme heat in North Carolina.

The impacts of extreme heat are broad and systemic, affecting not only human health and well-being, but also infrastructure, energy systems, and public services. Many of the best strategies to address these impacts are implemented at the local level, by local governments and their partners. This paper covers the approaches taken by the North Carolina State Resilience Office (SRO), the North Carolina State Climate Office (SCO) and their partners to support the development of heat action plans by local governments in their state. These agencies collaborated to develop planning support resources

The WaterProtect governance guide: Experiences from seven agricultural and drinking water production catchments across Europe.

Although collaborative, multi-level and adaptive governance is put forward as the right approach to manage water resources, it remains a challenge for local water managers to engage with multiple understandings and perspectives and to move towards more transdisciplinary approaches in water governance. In this research, we address this need by proposing a practical guide for water governance assessment and improvement, existing of three successive steps, i.e. (1) an assessment of water governance, (2) the implementation of a multi-actor process and (3) an evaluation of achievements. This guide

The contested politics of de-privatisation and the shifting terrain of the local state: the case of the Ilm-Kreis, Thuringia, Germany.

The trend towards de-privatisation has reshaped the role of local governments and their delivery of public services across the world. Local de-privatisation encompasses the twin processes of remunicipalisation, whereby towns, cities, and rural districts take previously privatised services and infrastructure back into public ownership, and municipalisation, a process of setting up new public provision. While global in scope, de-privatisation is particularly pronounced in Germany, prompting debates about the progressive potential of public ownership as an alternative (urban) politics beyond neol

Assessing the Effectiveness and Accessibility of Trauma Care in East London: A Comprehensive Evaluation.

East London has a distinct landscape for trauma care, balancing innovation and significant socioeconomic challenges. The Barts Health NHS Trust, found in East London, trauma care is critically examined in this evaluation, considering its successes in pre-hospital response, hospital care, rehabilitation, and prevention. Surrounding problems, such as community violence, budget shortages, and vulnerabilities in the data infrastructure, all impact trauma provision in this area. Pure squamous cell carcinoma of the pancreas: a rare and challenging diagnosis (case report).

INTRODUCTION: in August 2020, the World Health Organization African Region was certified free of wild poliovirus (WPV) when Nigeria became the last African country to interrupt wild poliovirus transmission. The National Polio Emergency Operations Center instituted in 2012 to coordinate and manage Nigerian polio eradication efforts reviewed the epidemiology of WPV cases during 2000-2020 to document lessons learned. METHODS: we analyzed reported WPV cases by serotype based on age, oral poliovirus vaccine immunization history, month and year of reported cases, and annual geographic distribution

Governance configurations of coordination in municipal health promotion: insights from an egocentric network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Municipal health promotion requires coordination across organizational and sectoral boundaries. Fragmented responsibilities, strong organizational autonomy and limited formal authority can make sustained cross-sectoral coordination challenging. Although research on Health in All Policies and governance capacity has highlighted the organizational conditions necessary for coordination, little is known about how coordination functions are embedded within municipal governance networks. This study examines the structural conditions that shape cross-sectoral coordination in municipal hea

The study aims to characterise the activity of Polish municipalities in implementing PH tasks during the period 2019-2024. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional survey was conducted via Computer-Assisted Web Interview using a proprietary questionnaire prepared with input from experts in PH. All municipalities in Poland were invited to parti

Perspectives on Public Health Department Accreditation: Lessons Learned From Ohio's Accreditation Mandate.

CONTEXT: Ohio is the only state that requires local health departments (LHDs) to be accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). As of May 2024, 80% of Ohio's 111 LHDs achieved accreditation, making Ohio the state with the highest proportion of accredited LHDs in the country. Examining the Association Between Public Health Accreditation and COVID-19 Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between local health department (LHD) accreditation and COVID-19 community outcomes, including rates of adult vaccination, hospitalization, and death. DESIGN: We examined county level rates of adult vaccination, hospitalization, and death by LHD accreditation status over the course of the COVID pandemic. Additional independent variables included time period, COVID-19 Community Vulnerability Index (CCVI), state public health governance structure, and state policy environment. We used hierarchal linear mixed modeling with random intercept for county level d

Improving Local Health Through Partner Engagement and Policy: Establishing the First Performance Standards for Massachusetts Local Public Health.

CONTEXT: The Massachusetts (MA) local public health system is highly decentralized. All 351 municipalities autonomously manage local public health infrastructure and budget, resulting in service delivery disparities. The MA Department of Public Health (MDPH) recognizes that achieving equitable access to public health services requires systems change, and successful systems change demands active participation and input from partners at all levels. OBJECTIVES: To collaboratively establish the first Performance Standards (PS) with and for MA local public health to reduce inequities in public hea

A Qualitative Study on Barriers and Facilitators to Effective Collaboration Between Local Health Departments and Hospitals.

A central component of the Public Health 3.0 model is building partnerships between local public health departments and other community organizations/stakeholders, including public and private hospitals, as a means of promoting data sharing, service coordination, and collective action. Evidence suggests that such partnerships remain challenging and infrequent. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to identify barriers and facilitators to building effective collaboration between local health departments (LHDs) and hospitals. We purposively recruited LHD officials (n = 12) across the U
