Effect of magnetic field-assisted thawing on the flavor characteristics of blueberries.

The effects of magnetic field on the flavor of thawed blueberries were studied. The results showed that the group thawed with magnetic assistance had significantly higher ascorbic acid content and sugar-acid ratio (P < 0.05) compared to the non-magnetic-field thawed group. The electronic nose showed that sensor response values in the air thawing group were generally higher than those in the immersion thawing group. The electronic tongue detected only minor differences in acidity among blueberries from different thawing treatments. Furthermore, a total of 46 effective volatile organic compounds

On the Intensity of the Microvascular Magnetic Field in Normal State and Septic Shock.

Background: Capillary tortuosity is a morphological variant of microcirculation. However, the mechanisms by which tortuous vessels meet metabolic requirements in health and disease remain unknown. We recently reported that capillary tortuosity score (CTS) is significantly higher in patients with septic shock than in steady-state individuals, and that CTS is significantly associated with alveolar-to-arterial oxygen (A-a O2) gradient and oxygen debt in septic shock patients. Objective: We aimed to investigate the characteristics of the magnetic fields in the sublingual microcirculation of indivi

Magnetic Field-Driven Electrogenic Scaffold Enhances the Nerve Regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Neural conduits (NGCs) are widely used for peripheral nerve regeneration but have shown limited therapeutic effects. Electrical stimulation combined with NGCs is becoming a new treatment paradigm. Conventional electrical stimulation approaches for nerve regeneration are typically hindered by inconvenience, infection, and may cause secondary damage. METHODS: This study developed a non-contact electrical stimulation platform using a magnetic field-coupled polycaprolactone/conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/black phosphorus nerve conduit. This composite nerve conduit

Magnetization Control of Zero-Field Intrinsic Superconducting Diode Effect.

The superconducting diode effect (SDE), which causes a superconducting state in one direction and a normal-conducting state in another, has significant potential for developing ultralow power consumption circuits and non-volatile memory. However, the practical control of the SDE necessities the precise tuning of current, temperature, magnetic field, or magnetism. Therefore, the mechanisms of the SDE must be understood to develop novel materials and devices capable of realizing the SDE under more controlled and robust conditions. This study demonstrates an intrinsic zero-field SDE with an effic

Magnetic Field Tuning Ionic Current Generated by Chiromagnetic Nanofilms.

The realization of chiral magnetic effect by macroscopically manipulating quantum states of chiral matter under the magnetic field makes a future for information transmission, memory storage, magnetic cooling materials etc., while the microscopic tiny signal differences of at the interface electrons are laborious to be discerned. Here, chiromagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanofilms were successfully prepared by modulating the magnetic and electrical transition dipoles and combined with confined ion transport, enabling magnetic field-tunable ionic currents with markedly ∼7.91-fold higher for l-tart

Biodegradable shape memory nanocomposites with thermal and magnetic field responsiveness.

Thermal and magnetic field responsive biodegradable shape memory polymer nanocomposite was prepared with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and poly(L-lactides) (PLLA). The magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of 9 nm were initially synthesized by co-precipitation method and then followed by surface modification using oleic acid. The TEM and SEM results show that the surface modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles can evenly disperse in chloroform and PLLA polymer matrix. The tensile test results show that the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to a PLLA matrix greatly improved the elastic modulus, tensile st

Controlling the photoluminescence of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots with a magnetic field.

We present an investigation of the photoluminescence of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots at high light intensity and in low magnetic fields. Upon increasing the magnetic field up to 90 G, the photoluminescence intensity drops. When decreasing the magnetic field back to zero the photoluminescence drop remains present. A plausible explanation is the Zeeman splitting of defect-associated energy levels under the influence of a magnetic field. The defect-trapped electrons may then be positioned at a metastable level, thereby reducing the number of recombinations. This effect may be used to control the lumines

Suppression of drinking by exposure to a high-strength static magnetic field.

High-strength static magnetic fields of 7 T and above have been shown to have both immediate and delayed effects on rodents, such as the induction of locomotor circling and the acquisition of conditioned taste aversions. In this study, the acute effects of magnet field exposure on drinking were examined. Exposure to a 14.1-T magnetic field for as little as 5 min significantly decreased the amount of a glucose and saccharin solution (G+S) consumed by water-deprived rats over 10 min. The decreased intake could be accounted for largely, but not entirely, by an increase in the latency of magnet-ex

Regenerative effects of pulsed magnetic field on injured peripheral nerves.

Previous studies confirm that pulsed magnetic field (PMF) accelerates functional recovery after a nerve crush lesion. The contention that PMF enhances the regeneration is still controversial, however. The influence of a new PMF application protocol (trained PMF) on nerve regeneration was studied in a model of crush injury of the sciatic nerve of rats. To determine if exposure to PMF influences regeneration, we used electrophysiological recordings and ultrastructural examinations. After the measurements of conduction velocity, the sucrose-gap method was used to record compound action potentials

Use of a permanent magnetic field to inhibit the development of canine osteoarthritis.

This study was designed to determine the potential of a permanent magnetic field to inhibit the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) in a canine model. The magnetic field was created by 72 domino-sized ceramic magnets with surface field strength of 1100 G (0.11 T). The magnetic field strength at the surface of the mattress was 450-500 G (45-50 mT) and was equally distributed over the mattress surface. Eighteen animals had closed resection of their right stifle anterior cruciate ligament. Their kennel floors were covered in one of three ways: no floor mattress (OA) (N = 6); a floor mattress with

Effect of a static magnetic field on orthodontic tooth movement in the rat.

Orthodontic tooth movement may be enhanced by the application of a magnetic field. Bone remodelling necessary for orthodontic tooth movement involves clastic cells, which are tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) positive and which may also be regulated by growth hormone (GH) via its receptor (GHR). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a static magnetic field (SMF) on orthodontic tooth movement in the rat. Thirty-two male Wistar rats, 9 weeks old, were fitted with an orthodontic appliance directing a mesial force of 30 g on the left maxillary first molar. The appliance inc

[Use of artificial magnetic field for rehabilitation of children with malignant tumors].

Local complications of standard intravenous injections for chemotherapy and due to error of administration were compared in 400 patients (200 of them children) and general wound pathologies described. Treatment for wounds included two modalities: standard medication and alternating or pulsating magnetic field. Magnetic therapy proved highly effective: wound healing was 3-3.5 times faster while duration of treatment--2-3 times shorter than in standard procedure. Clinically-verified partial adhesion-related intestinal obstruction was eliminated by magnetic procedure in 18 children after combined

A computer simulation of the static magnetic field distribution in the human head.

Distortion of the static magnetic field inside the human head is dependent on regional tissue susceptibility variations and geometrical shape. These effects result in resonance line broadening and frequency shifts and consequently, intensity and spatial errors in both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy. To calculate the field distortion due to the susceptibility's geometry, two dimensional (2D) finite element analysis was applied to simulate the field distribution in a 2D model of the human head, placed in a uniform magnetic field. The model contains air-

Giant somatosensory evoked magnetic field in patients with myoclonus epilepsy.

We investigated somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in patients with myoclonus epilepsy. The median nerve was stimulated at the wrist, and responses were recorded over the contralateral hemisphere. The source of the enlarged cortical component of the giant SEF was localized on the post-central sensory cortex. The P1 component of the giant cortical response was composed mainly of a tangentially oriented dipole at area 3b. This is the first magnetoencephalographic analysis of an abnormally enlarged somatosensory cortical response.

Measurement-Based Prediction of Inductive Ignition Risk Boundaries for Bridgewire Electro-Explosive Devices Under Transient Magnetic Fields.

Predicting the ignition risk of bridgewire electro-explosive devices (EEDs) under transient magnetic fields requires linking the local magnetic field history to the inductive response of the associated closed loop and the thermal response of the bridgewire-charge system. In this study, a measurement-grounded framework was developed by combining transient field measurement with a three-dimensional electromagnetic-thermal model. A custom inductive probe with a manufacturer-specified equivalent magnetic flux area of Ap = 12,029 mm2 was used to obtain the local magnetic field rate history (dB/dt).
