Reproductive strategy, clonal structure and genetic diversity in populations of the aquatic macrophyte Sparganium emersum in river systems.

Many aquatic and riparian plant species are characterized by the ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually. Yet, little is known about how spatial variation in sexual and asexual reproduction affects the genotypic diversity within populations of aquatic and riparian plants. We used six polymorphic microsatellites to examine the genetic diversity within and differentiation among 17 populations (606 individuals) of Sparganium emersum, in two Dutch-German rivers. Our study revealed a striking difference between rivers in the mode of reproduction (sexual vs. asexual) within S. emersum popul

The exodermis: a variable apoplastic barrier.

The exodermis (hypodermis with Casparian bands) of plant roots represents a barrier of variable resistance to the radial flow of both water and solutes and may contribute substantially to the overall resistance. The variability is a result largely of changes in structure and anatomy of developing roots. The extent and rate at which apoplastic exodermal barriers (Casparian bands and suberin lamellae) are laid down in radial transverse and tangential walls depends on the response to conditions in a given habitat such as drought, anoxia, salinity, heavy metal or nutrient stresses. As Casparian ba

Involvement of calcium ion in the stimulated shoot elongation of arrowhead tubers under anaerobic conditions.

Shoot elongation of arrowhead (Sagittaria pygmaea Miq.) tubers was stimulated in anaerobic conditions. The anaerobic elongation was attributed to stimulation of cell elongation in the middle of the shoots. The anaerobic elongation of the shoots was severely inhibited by ethylene glycol bis(beta-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA). The EGTA inhibition was completely nullified by exogenous CaCl2, which acts as an enhancer of anaerobic elongation. Moreover, calcium channel blockers, verapamil, diltiazem and LaCl3, inhibited the anaerobic elongation enhanced by CaCl2. These results

A High Throughput and User-Friendly Computational Tool for Quantifying and Visualizing Symmetry Variation in Image Datasets.

Symmetry is a fundamental property of biological systems, yet it is commonly reduced to discrete, subjective classifications that fail to capture the continuous and graded nature of symmetry in real organisms. We present a high-throughput, user-friendly computational framework for quantifying and visualizing biological symmetry as a continuous variable using transformation information ( T I ), an information theoretic measure that quantifies the divergence between an object and its transformed self. We establish key mathematical properties of T I , including invariance, equivariance, and Lip

A single dominant GLOBOSA allele accounts for repeated origins of hose-in-hose flowers in Sinningia (Gesneriaceae).

Plants bearing double flowers have long been cultivated as ornamental plants. Hose-in-hose flowers, bearing two-whorled corolla tubes in whorls 1 and 2, are uncommon but recur in Sinningia (Gesnerioideae, Gesneriaceae). In this study, we selected 15 hose-in-hose cultivars as materials to explore the underlying molecular and genetic mechanisms of this floral architecture. We found that they originated from different hybridization events within the Dircaea clade. Three B-class MADS-box genes were globally expressed in all floral whorls, but only GLOBOSA1 (GLO1) has accumulated a dominant mutatio

Dioncophyllines C2, D2, and F and Related Naphthylisoquinoline Alkaloids from the Congolese Liana Ancistrocladus ileboensis with Potent Activities against Plasmodium falciparum and against Multiple Myeloma and Leukemia Cell Lines.

Dioncophylline F (1), the first 5,8'-coupled dioncophyllaceous alkaloid (i.e., lacking an oxygen function at C-6 and possessing an R-configuration at C-3), was isolated from the recently described Congolese liana Ancistrocladus ileboensis. Two further, likewise Dioncophyllaceae-type, alkaloids, the dioncophyllines C2 (2) and D2 (3), were identified, along with the Ancistrocladaceae-type compound ancistrocladisine B (4), which is oxygenated at C-6 and S-configured at C-3. The structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopic, chemical, and chiroptical methods. The stereostructure

Trypanosoma brucei Inhibition by Essential Oils from Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Traditionally Used in Cameroon (Azadirachta indica, Aframomum melegueta, Aframomum daniellii, Clausena anisata, Dichrostachys cinerea and Echinops giganteus).

Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile components produced by the plant secondary metabolism and consist mainly of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes and, to a minor extent, of aromatic and aliphatic compounds. They are exploited in several fields such as perfumery, food, pharmaceutics, and cosmetics. Essential oils have long-standing uses in the treatment of infectious diseases and parasitosis in humans and animals. In this regard, their therapeutic potential against human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) has not been fully explored. In the present work, we have selected six medicinal and

Juncaceae species as sources of innovative bioactive compounds for the food industry: In vitro antioxidant activity, neuroprotective properties and in silico studies.

Several Juncus species are traditionally used as sedative and to treat health problems like insomnia. This work was based on the hypothesis that Juncus acutus, J. maritimus and J. inflexus may have molecules with bioactivities relevant for the improvement of cognitive functions and thus with potential use as food additives and/or nutraceuticals. Therefore leaves and roots extracts of those species were evaluated for radical scavenging (RSA) and metal chelating activities, and for in vitro inhibition of acetyl-(AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). The bioactive compound was isolated and ide

An invasive macrophyte alters sediment chemistry due to suppression of a native isoetid.

The submersed macrophyte Utricularia inflata (inflated bladderwort) is a recent invader of Adirondack Mountain lakes (NY, USA). A 15-week greenhouse experiment and a 7-week field experiment were conducted to test the hypothesis that this rootless species fundamentally changes sediment chemistry through its suppression of the native short-statured species, Eriocaulon aquaticum. E. aquaticum has an extensive root system that releases oxygen into the sediment. In greenhouse conditions, E. aquaticum raised the porewater redox potential of otherwise bare sediment from 25 to 324 mV, lowered the sedi

Plant N capture from pulses: effects of pulse size, growth rate, and other soil resources.

In arid ecosystems, the ability to rapidly capture nitrogen (N) from brief pulses is expected to influence plant growth, survival, and competitive ability. Theory and data suggest that N capture from pulses should depend on plant growth rate and availability of other limiting resources. Theory also predicts trade-offs in plant stress tolerance and ability to capture N from different size pulses. We injected K15NO3, to simulate small and large N pulses at three different times during the growing season into soil around the co-dominant Great Basin species Sarcobatus vermiculatus, Chrysothamnus n

Evidence for the monophyletic evolution of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis in angiosperms.

Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) consist of more than 2500 diverse structures largely restricted to the order Ranunculales and the eumagnoliids. However, BIAs also occur in the Rutaceae, Lauraceae, Cornaceae and Nelumbonaceae, and sporadically throughout the order Piperales. Several of these alkaloids function in the defense of plants against herbivores and pathogens--thus the capacity for BIA biosynthesis is expected to play an important role in the reproductive fitness of certain plants. Biochemical and molecular phylogenetic approaches were used to investigate the evolution of BIA biosyn

Uptake and loss of chlorpyrifos and atrazine by Juncus effusus l. in a mesocosm study with a mixture of pesticides.

Abstract-Aquatic organisms in agricultural regions typically are exposed to mixtures of agrochemicals, and effects are not adequately predicted from results of single pesticide exposure studies. Thus, a mesocosm study was designed to examine the fate and effects of varying mixtures of three pesticides (chlorpyrifos, atrazine, and monosodium methanearsonate) and mercury-contaminated sediment to the common freshwater macrophyte Juncus effusus L. Exposure doses of pesticides added to mesocosms represented those that might be encountered in a typical runoff or direct spray application. This study

Screening of various Swertia species extracts in primary monolayer cultures of rat hepatocytes against carbon tetrachloride- and paracetamol-induced toxicity.

Swertia chirata Buch-Ham. (Gentianaceae), one of the oldest medicinal herbs of India, is a source of the Indian ayurvedic drug 'chirata' used for the treatment of liver disorders and malarial fevers. In this study, eight species of Swertia were collected. Each of the dry whole plant was extracted into methanol, the aqueous extract of which was sequentially extracted into hexane, chloroform and butanol extracts. The extracts were screened for their anti-hepatotoxic activity against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and paracetamol (acetaminophen (AAP)) toxicity in primary monolayer cultures of rat he

Calcium gradient in plant cells with polarized growth in simulated microgravity.

Plant cells characterized by apical growth, for example, root hairs and apical cells of moss protonema, are a convenient model to address the problem of gravity response mechanisms including initiation of cell polarity. The fluorescent calcium probe, chlorotetracycline, allowed us to display the calcium distribution gradient in these cells. Irradiation by red light led to a sharp decrease in the Ca2+ ion activity in cells. During clinostatting in darkness the pattern of calcium influx and distribution changes inconsiderably as compared with control; in root hairs calcium is detected mainly in
