A butenolide-containing sugar available from the aldol condensation of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-alpha-D-glucopyranosid-2-ulose with diethyl malonate is autoxidized at the C-3 position into the corresponding alpha,beta-unsaturated gamma-lactone sugar by air, which subsequently undergoes 1,4-conjugate (Michael) addition of hydroxide ion (or water) leading to a C-branched-chain glucopyranosidulose. The autoxidations are also performed in weakly basic, neutral and weakly acidic medium, respectively.

Microbiologic investigations were carried out of excrements as were measurements of blood levels of malonic dialdegyde, reduced glutathione and activity of glutathione-dependent enzymes in 36 patients with peptic ulcer when they experienced exacerbation. Gastric and duodenal ulcer in exacerbation was accompanied by dysbacteriosis of the large intestine, uncontrolled augmentation of the processes of free-radical lipid oxidation against the background of impairment of functional systems of antiradical defence, which fact plays its part in relapsing of gastroduodenal ulcer.

Levels of gexosamines, free oxiprolin, gexuronic acids, malonic dialdehyd, reduced glutathione and total content of gexosamines in blood as well as spontaneous chemiluminescence of blood serum were studied in 89 patients with duodenal ulcer during rehabilitative treatment and in 35 healthy subjects. Rehabilitative stage-by-stage treatment was demonstrated to ensure normalization of anti-radical protective systems of the body, beneficially influence connective tissue structures of gastric and duodenal mucosa, prevent exacerbation of the disease.

A relationship between ribamydil concentration and the intensity of accumulation of peroxidation products was found while storing ribamydil-containing liposomes which indicated a significant pro-oxidant activity of ribamydil. Increasing lethality of guinea pigs and white mice infected with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus was shown while using liposomal ribamydil containing from 4.78 to 6.82 nmol. ml-1 malonic dialdehyde which appeared to be associated with disordered function of the antioxidant system of the experimental animals.

Selenocysteine (Sec) is the 21st amino acid in the genetic code where this amino acid is primarily involved in redox reactions in enzymes because of its high reactivity toward oxygen and related reactive oxygen species. BACKGROUND: Fecal incontinence is common in children with anorectal anomalies or spina bifida. If it is possible to achieve fecal control, patients are given a large volume of enema once a day. A new conjugate-base-stabilized carboxylic acid (CBSCA) containing a 3,5-bis(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenylthiourea functionality catalyses challenging one-pot condensations/6π-electrocyclizations of hydrazines and α,β-unsaturated ketones under mild conditions. The preparation of certain 3-substituted derivatives of 3.4-dihydro-2-methyl-4-oxoquinazoline is described. The synthesis fo a quinazolone-barbituric acid derivative, in which the two constituting moieties are separated by methylene groups, was achieved by reacting 3-[B-haloethyl]-3.4-dihydro-2-methyl-4-oxoquinazoline with sodio malonic ester and subsequent cyclization of the ester so formed with urea. Attempts to introduce the alpha-glutaryl group at the position 3 of the quinazolone ring system via different routes were unsuccessful.
