Poking Around: A Comparative Study of Complications in Trans-rectal Versus Trans-perineal Prostate Biopsies.

Background Trans-rectal prostate biopsy (TRPB) has historically been the commonest method for diagnosing prostate cancer but carries an increased risk of infection related to rectal flora. Trans-perineal prostate biopsy (TPPB), which avoids the rectal mucosa, is proposed to reduce infectious complications. This study compares post-biopsy infection rates and length of hospital stay (LOS) between TRPB and TPPB at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted on all TRPBs performed in 2022 and all TPPBs performed in 2024 by urologists at Mater Dei Hospital. Outcome

Root cause analysis to identify contributing factors for the development of hospital acquired pressure injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Many hospital settings are adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards pressure injury (PI) development; this requires good planning and the implementation of care, as the incidence of PIs reflects the quality of care given in a hospital or facility. AIM: To identify common contributing factors towards the development of PIs in a geriatric rehabilitation hospital and improve patient safety through the reduction of hospital-acquired PIs. METHOD: This was done using root cause analysis (RCA). All patients who developed a Stage 3 or 4 deep tissue injuries or unstageable hospital-acqu

Identification and Characterization of Outer Membrane Proteins and Membrane Spanning Protein Complexes in Brucella melitensis.

Brucellosis (Malta fever) is a zoonotic disease that affects both humans and animals, including cattle, sheep, and goats. Brucella melitensis is the most virulent and clinically significant species in humans. It is a gram-negative bacterium with three groups of outer membrane proteins (OMPs): minor OMPs (Group 1) and major OMPs (Groups 2 and 3). OMPs with β-barrel architecture play important roles in nutrient transport, efflux, adhesion, and membrane biogenesis. Despite their importance, the structure, function, and interaction dynamics of several B. melitensis β-barrel OMPs and associated pro

Trends in corpus uteri cancer mortality in member states of the European Union.

OBJECTIVES: The burden of corpus uteri cancer varies in the European Union (EU). We analysed trends in corpus uteri cancer mortality in 26 EU member states from 1970 onward. METHODS: Population numbers and number of uterine cancer deaths were extracted from the World Health Organisation mortality database. Corpus uteri cancer mortality rates were corrected for certification problems using different reallocation rules for deaths registered as uterine cancer not otherwise specified, or using mixed disease codes. Join point regression was used to study the annual percentage change of age-standar

Intimate partner violence: psychological and verbal abuse during pregnancy.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between sociodemographic, pregnancy-related variables and psychological and verbal intimate partner abuse, as well as to determine which of these variables are predictors of psychological and verbal intimate partner abuse during pregnancy. BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence is a significant health issue, with severe implications to both mother and foetus. However, much of the research to date focuses on the outcomes of physical abuse. This article addresses the dearth in the literature by examining the association between sociodemographic, pr

Obstetric Ultrasound Screening in Lebanon for Fetal Diagnosis and Associated Factors of Congenital Abnormalities.

Background and Objectives: Congenital abnormalities are a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality and are frequently detectable through prenatal ultrasound. While widely implemented in high-income countries, such screening remains inconsistently applied in low- and middle-income regions. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of congenital abnormalities identified via prenatal ultrasound in Lebanon and to explore associated maternal, obstetric, and psychosocial factors. Methods: A multicenter retrospective observational study, supplemented by follow-up interviews, was conducted

Mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis complicating pulmonary tuberculosis.

Glomerulonephritis in tuberculosis may be a direct manifestation of renal infection or a result of immune-complex deposition complicating extra-renal infection, such as in pulmonary tuberculosis. A 17-year-old adolescent boy from Somalia was found to have pulmonary tuberculosis during routine health screening performed on entering Malta, with computed tomography of the chest showing scarring and calcification of the left upper lobe, left lower lobe consolidation, and a small left-sided pleural effusion. Five days after starting anti-tuberculous therapy, he developed lower limb and sacral oedem

Establishing a familial hypercholesterolaemia register - The first year.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant condition raising the risk of premature cardiovascular disease up to twentyfold.[1] [2] It is under-diagnosed and undertreated, in spite of availability of effective treatment. Registers are recommended to assist in the recognition and improvement of the condition since treatment reduces morbidity and mortality. Disease registers enable longitudinal review and the application of continuous quality improvement methodology. The aims of this paper are to describe the process of setting up a new FH register in Malta b

The genome sequence of Brucella pinnipedialis B2/94 sheds light on the evolutionary history of the genus Brucella.

BACKGROUND: Since the discovery of the Malta fever agent, Brucella melitensis, in the 19th century, six terrestrial mammal-associated Brucella species were recognized over the next century. More recently the number of novel Brucella species has increased and among them, isolation of species B. pinnipedialis and B. ceti from marine mammals raised many questions about their origin as well as on the evolutionary history of the whole genus. RESULTS: We report here on the first complete genome sequence of a Brucella strain isolated from marine mammals, Brucella pinnipedialis strain B2/94. A whole

Identification of antibiotic resistance patterns in Helicobacter pylori strains isolated from gastric biopsies using real-time PCR and genotypic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is associated with dyspepsia, mucus-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, gastritis, and peptic ulcer disease. Treatment in Malta consists of triple therapy, which consists of a proton pump inhibitor and 2 of the antibiotics amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole and fluoroquinolones. We aimed to determine the resistance rates for clarithromycin and fluoroquinolones in patients with H. pylori, and its incidence, in patients undergoing an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). METHODS: Patients undergo
