Lymph node resident memory T cells retain effector capabilities by evading lung resident memory dysfunction.

Resident memory T cells (TRM) mediate localized immunity in barrier tissues while central memory T cells (TCM) recirculate through lymphoid organs to surveil for reinfection. Although TRM are classically associated with peripheral non-lymphoid tissues, they have also been identified within lymph nodes (LNRM) where the mechanisms guiding their formation and functional differences remain poorly understood. Here we used longitudinal antibody labeling to track the migratory history of memory T cells after influenza infection and demonstrate that CD69+CD103+ T cells are resident in the lymph node.

Task-dependent reinstatement of irrelevant features from long-term memory into visual working memory templates.

Objects actively stored in visual working memory (VWM) produce VWM-based attentional capture. Interestingly, for an object's features to be stored in VWM, they do not need to be shown but can also be reinstated from long-term memory (LTM). Unlike shown features, reinstated features in VWM sometimes capture attention even when task-irrelevant, suggesting observers may be able to choose when reinstatement occurs. To investigate the control of LTM reinstatement, we examined how capture by reinstated features is influenced by differences in task demands. Participants memorized objects with specifi

When Attention Fails Memory: Voluntary Orienting Deficits and Visual Short-Term Memory in Intellectual Disability.

Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) exhibit deficits in both selective attention and visual short-term memory (VSTM). However, whether attentional deficits directly constrain VSTM performance in ID remains unknown. Here, we examined the interplay between these two processes in ID and their correlates with fluid intelligence across individuals with varying levels of intellectual functioning. Nineteen adults with ID and twenty-two chronologically matched neurotypical adults (TDA) carried out the Attentional Orienting Task (AOT), in which they briefly viewed a memory array, followed by

Film recall reveals intact event memory but impaired sequence memory in temporal lobe epilepsy patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with epilepsy (PWE), especially temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), experience impaired memory for personally experienced events. However, current assessments of episodic memory are limited in their ecological validity with a potential to miss detection of subtle cognitive decline. We conducted an exploratory study to determine whether a naturalistic film-viewing task with open-ended spoken recall could detect memory differences between TLE patients and healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: TLE patients (ages 18-60, fluent in English, not legally blind) were recruited

Decidual CD4 Effector Memory and Resident Memory T Cells Respond to Cord Blood Allo-Antigens.

PROBLEM: Maternal CD4 T cells are critical coordinators of maternal-fetal immune tolerance and immunity during pregnancy. Decidual regulatory T cells (TREG) have been shown to provide essential immune suppressive functions to control allogeneic responses and inflammation. Activated CD4 memory T cells form the largest fraction of decidual T cells, yet their diversity, specificity, and functions remain largely undefined. METHOD OF STUDY: Using high-dimensional flow cytometry (HDFC), computational and functional analysis to characterize decidual CD4 memory T-cell types and their functions. RESU

Prospective memory performance and its resting-state functional connectivity correlates in individuals with memory complaints.

This study aimed to investigate prospective memory (PM) in patients with memory complaints but without dementia (PWD) and correlate findings with resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) alterations. We hypothesized that PM impairment would be evident at a certain relatively early point in the continuum and specific rsFC patterns would be the neuroimaging signature of this impairment. Sixty PWD participated in the study. The Memory Screening Test for Intentions and the Virtual Week were used to assess PM. Using the participants' PM scores as a regressor, the rsFC for PM was analyzed by Net

Exploring Memory Compensation in Dyslexia: Strengths and Weaknesses in Memory Patterns Among Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Declarative memory plays a crucial role in learning and may serve as a compensatory mechanism for phonological deficits in individuals with dyslexia. However, research on its variability within this population remains limited. This study aimed to identify distinct declarative memory profiles in children and adolescents with dyslexia and examine their potential compensatory role. METHODS: A total of 714 participants aged 10-19 years, including 136 individuals with dyslexia and 578 neurotypical controls, completed the Test of Memory and Learning Second Edition (TOMAL-2). Persistent activity during working memory maintenance predicts long-term memory formation in the human hippocampus.

Working Memory (WM) and Long-Term Memory (LTM) are often viewed as separate cognitive systems. Little is known about how these systems interact when forming memories. We recorded single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe while patients maintained novel items in WM and a subsequent recognition memory test for the same items. In the hippocampus but not the amygdala, the level of WM content-selective persist activity during WM maintenance was predictive of whether the item was later recognized with high confidence or forgotten. In contrast, visually evoked activity in the same cells was no

Memory CD8 T cell inflation vs tissue-resident memory T cells: Same patrollers, same controllers?

The induction of long-lived populations of memory T cells residing in peripheral tissues is of considerable interest for T cell-based vaccines, as they can execute immediate effector functions and thus provide protection in case of pathogen encounter at mucosal and barrier sites. Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-based vaccines support the induction and accumulation of a large population of effector memory CD8 T cells in peripheral tissues, in a process called memory inflation. Tissue-resident memory (TRM ) T cells, induced by various infections and vaccination regimens, constitute another subset of memor

Heterarchic reinstatement of long-term memory: A concept on hippocampal amnesia in rodent memory research.

Evidence from clinical and animal research highlights the role of the hippocampus in long-term memory (LTM). Decades of experimental work have produced numerous theoretical accounts of the hippocampus in LTM, and each suggests that hippocampal disruption produces amnesia for specific categories of memory. These accounts also imply that hippocampal disruption before or soon after a learning episode should have equivalent amnestic effects. Recent evidence from lesion and inactivation experiments in rodents illustrates that hippocampal disruption after a learning episode causes memory impairment

Aging impairs intermediate-term behavioral memory by disrupting the dorsal paired medial neuron memory trace.

How the functional activity of the brain is altered during aging to cause age-related memory impairments is unknown. We used functional cellular imaging to monitor two different calcium-based memory traces that underlie olfactory classical conditioning in young and aged Drosophila. Functional imaging of neural activity in the processes of the dorsal paired medial (DPM) and mushroom body neurons revealed that the capacity to form an intermediate-term memory (ITM) trace in the DPM neurons after learning is lost with age, whereas the capacity to form a short-term memory trace in the α'/β' mushroo

Expectation-driven changes in cortical functional connectivity influence working memory and long-term memory performance.

Expectations generated by predictive cues increase the efficiency of perceptual processing for complex stimuli (e.g., faces, scenes); however, the impact this has on working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) has not yet been investigated. Here, healthy young adults performed delayed-recognition tasks that differed only in stimulus category expectations, while behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. Univariate and functional-connectivity analyses were used to examine expectation-driven, prestimulus neural modulation, networks that regulate this modulation,

Impaired fear memory, altered object memory and modified hippocampal synaptic plasticity in split-brain mice.

The hippocampus is critical for memory formation. However, the contributions of the hippocampal commissure (HC) and the corpus callosum (CC) are less clear. To elucidate the role of the forebrain commissures in learning and memory, we performed a behavioural and electrophysiological characterization of an inbred mouse strain that displays agenesis of the CC and congenitally reduced HC (BTBR T+ tf/J; 'BTBR'). Compared to a control strain, BTBR mice have severely impaired contextual fear memory, with normal object recognition memory. Interestingly, continuous environmental "enrichment" significa

Integrated memory for objects, places, and temporal order: evidence for episodic-like memory in mice.

Human episodic memory refers to the recollection of an unique past experience in terms of what happened, and where and when it happened. Factoring out the issue of conscious recollection, episodic memory, even at the behavioral level, has been difficult to demonstrate in non-human mammals. Although, it was previously shown that rodents can associate what and when or what and where information given on unique trials, it proved to be difficult to demonstrate memory for what, where, and when simultaneously in mammals, without using extensive training procedures, which might induce semantic rather

Prediction of verbal memory decline after epilepsy surgery in children: effectiveness of Wada memory asymmetries.

PURPOSE: Differences in Wada memory performance after left and right amobarbital injection are powerful predictors of pre- to postoperative memory change among adult epilepsy patients after anterior temporal lobectomy. It is unknown, however, whether these Wada memory asymmetries apply to children who undergo focal cortical resection or to epilepsy surgery patients who undergo resection outside the temporal lobes. METHODS: To investigate these issues, Wada memory asymmetries and pre- to postoperative neuropsychological memory test performances were examined in 132 children who underwent some

Brain reserve in memory regions is associated with the preservation of autobiographical memories after electroconvulsive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may cause anterograde and autobiographical amnesia. Identifying reliable predictive biomarkers for the risk of this memory loss may assist clinicians in their decision to use this treatment. We aimed to investigate whether the baseline volume or the cortical thickness of the predetermined regions of interest (ROIs) involved in memory recall is correlated with the degree of amnesia after ECT. METHOD: In this longitudinal study, we followed 19 inpatients receiving ECT for depression. Using 3-T MRI, we performed structural brain scans prior to ECT. We
