Retrograde Amnesia for Episodic and Semantic Memories in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Retrograde amnesia (RA), which includes loss of memory for past personal events (autobiographical RA) and for acquired knowledge (semantic RA), has been largely documented in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, previous studies have produced controversial results particularly concerning the temporal extent of memory impairment. Here we investigated whether, with the onset of hippocampal pathology, age of memory acquisition and retrieval frequency play different roles in modulating the progressive loss of semantic and episodic contents of retrograde memory respecti

Generalized dissociative amnesia: episodic, semantic and procedural memories lost and found.

OBJECTIVE: This review tests Ribot's classic twofold categorization of generalized amnesia (GA) into Type I, total loss of episodic memory, and Type II, additional more or less extensive loss of semantic and/or procedural memory. It also explores his law of regression, according to which, cast in modern terms, recovery of lost procedural and semantic memories precedes recovery of episodic memory, as well as reported aetiological factors. METHOD: Clinically and formally assessed cases of GA, published since 1845, were surveyed and further analysed. RESULTS: Over and above authentic episodic m

Prior knowledge biases episodic memory by filling in the gaps in imprecise memories: Simulating aging effects in younger adults.

Episodic memories are consistently biased by prior knowledge in the form of schemas (e.g., where objects typically are). Rational memory reconstruction models propose that this results from the strategic recruitment of schemas at retrieval when memory traces are imprecise. We recently proposed that these models can also account for the increase in schema bias with aging: Aging reduces memory precision, thereby increasing schema usage. However, causal evidence that underlying memory imprecision increases schema bias is lacking, which is a critical gap for reconstruction theories and for our ext

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol modulates amyloid-related entorhinal vulnerability and episodic memory performance in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral amyloid-beta (Aβ) burden does not fully explain variation in Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related brain structure and episodic memory. We examined whether circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) modifies the cross-sectional statistical association between Aβ burden, the entorhinal cortex (EC) thickness and episodic memory performance. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 1,253 individuals in the Gwangju Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias cohort (798 cognitively normal, 425 mild cognitive impairment, 30 AD dementia) were analyzed. Primary conditional-pro

Trajectory scanning as a predictive coding mechanism for goal-directed navigation, obstacle avoidance and episodic memory.

Planning of future trajectories through the environment may rely on our capacity to encode and recall episodic memories that include spatial representations. Here, we describe potential mechanisms for behaviour based on episodic memory that would use neural trajectory scanning to explore and select trajectories towards remembered goal locations. This model is consistent with rodent neurophysiological data recorded in the medial entorhinal cortex that demonstrated alternating left-right scans of space and data recorded in the hippocampus of place cell firing that showed alternating scans, or sc

The effects of exercise on episodic memory in patients with depression: a three-level meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Using a three-level meta-analysis approach, this study evaluated the effects of exercise on episodic memory in patients with depression and explored its moderating variables. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across seven databases to identify randomized controlled trials examining the effects of exercise interventions on episodic memory in patients with depression. Two researchers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. A three-level meta-analysis was performed to calculate the pooled effect size (Hedges' g), and subgroup analyses we

Common and distinct contributions of the dorsomedial prefrontal and posterior parietal cortices to social episodic memory.

The self-reference effect (SRE) refers to the robust mnemonic advantage for self-relevant information and is characterized by a graded pattern spanning the self, close others, and distant others. Despite extensive behavioural evidence, causal evidence for the neural mechanisms supporting the SRE remains limited, particularly during incidental encoding and across source memory, metacognition, and emotional valence. We investigated the causal contributions of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to self-other episodic memory and metacognition using focal

Sex differences in the association between episodic memory residual reserve index and change in executive function.

Sex differences in cognitive reserve might contribute to females being disproportionately affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated sex differences in the protective effects of cognitive reserve, and whether brain beta-amyloid accounts for differences. Older adults (n = 997 from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle Study of Ageing) diagnosed as Cognitively Normal, Mild Cognitive Impairment, or AD at baseline were assessed every 18 months for up to a maximum of seven visits. Cognitive reserve was calculated from the variance in episodic memory not explained by demographi

Memristor-based circuit design of episodic memory neural network and its application in hurricane category prediction.

Episodic memory, as a type of long-term memory (LTM), is used to learn and store the unique personal experience. Based on the episodic memory biological mechanism, this paper proposes a bionic episodic memory memristive neural network circuit. The proposed memristive neural network circuit includes a neocortical module, a parahippocampal module and a hippocampus module. The neocortical module with the two paths structure is used to receive the sensory signal, and is also used to separate and transmit the spatial information and the non-spatial information involved in the sensory signal. The pa

Adolescent alcohol exposure disrupts episodic-like memory by impairing dopamine synapses in the mouse prelimbic cortex.

Heavy alcohol use during adolescence has a significant impact on cognitive functions, such as episodic memory, even after detoxification. However, in animal models, defects in episodic memory by adolescent alcohol exposure have not been consistently replicated, and thus, the brain regions and systems that are involved remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that adolescent alcohol exposure impairs episodic memory through the impairment of the dopamine system in the prelimbic region (PrL) of the medial prefrontal cortex in both females and males. Using mice as a model, we first show that adolesc

Mental rotation, episodic memory, and executive control: Possible effects of biological sex and oral contraceptive use.

Oral contraceptives (OCs) are one of the most common forms of hormonal birth control. A small literature suggests that OC use may affect visuospatial ability, episodic memory, and executive control. However, previous studies have been criticized for small sample sizes and the use of different, single cognitive tests. We investigated the degree to which biological sex and OC use might affect individual mental rotation, episodic memory, and executive control in a large sample of healthy, young adults (N = 155, including 52 OC users, 53 naturally cycling females, and 50 males) tested individually

Abnormal dynamic reconfiguration of the large-scale functional network in schizophrenia during the episodic memory task.

Episodic memory deficits are the core feature in schizophrenia (SCZ). Numerous studies have revealed abnormal brain activity associated with this disorder during episodic memory, however previous work has only relied on static analysis methods that treat the brain as a static monolithic structure, ignoring the dynamic features at different time scales. Here, we applied dynamic functional connectivity analysis to functional magnetic resonance imaging data during episodic memory and quantify integration and recruitment metrics to reveal abnormal dynamic reconfiguration of brain networks in SCZ.

Polygenic hazard score modified the relationship between hippocampal subfield atrophy and episodic memory in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Understanding genetic influences on Alzheimer's disease (AD) may improve early identification. Polygenic hazard score (PHS) is associated with the age of AD onset and cognitive decline. It interacts with other risk factors, but the nature of such combined effects remains poorly understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined the effect of genetic risk and hippocampal atrophy pattern on episodic memory in a sample of older adults ranging from cognitively normal to those diagnosed with AD using structural MRI. Participants included 51 memory unimpaired normal control (NC), 69 mild co

Differential neural structures, intrinsic functional connectivity, and episodic memory in subjective cognitive decline and healthy controls.

The neural correlates of subjective cognitive decline (SCD; i.e., without objectifiable deficit) remain to be elucidated. Possible causes of SCD include early neurodegeneration related to Alzheimer's disease or functional and structural changes related to sub-clinical depression. We investigated the relationship between episodic memory performance or memory complaints and structural or functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures in participants with SCD (n=18) but without psychiatric disorders and healthy controls (n=31). In SCD, memory complaints were not associated with memory perfo

Biperiden Selectively Impairs Verbal Episodic Memory in a Dose- and Time-Dependent Manner in Healthy Subjects.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Biperiden is a muscarinic antagonist that produces memory impairments without impairing attention or motor functions in healthy subjects. It has been suggested that a biperiden-induced memory deficit could model age- and dementia-related memory impairments. The goal of the current study was to determine the dose- and time-dependent effects of biperiden on cognition in healthy volunteers. METHODS/PROCEDURES: Twenty-one healthy volunteers participated in a placebo-controlled, 3-way, crossover study. After a baseline test, cognitive performance was tested at 3 time points aft

Low-frequency oscillations in default mode subnetworks are associated with episodic memory impairments in Alzheimer's disease.

Disruptions to functional connectivity in subsystems of the default mode network are evident in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Functional connectivity estimates correlations in the time course of low-frequency activity. Much less is known about other potential perturbations to this activity, such as changes in the amplitude of oscillations and how this relates to cognition. We examined the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in 44 AD patients and 128 cognitively normal participants and related this to episodic memory, the core deficit in AD. We show higher amplitudes of low-frequency oscillatio

Long-term episodic memory decline is associated with olfactory deficits only in carriers of ApoE-є4.

The ɛ4 allele of the Apolipoprotein E gene is a genetic risk factor for late-onset dementia of the Alzheimers' type (DAT), which is characterized by loss of both episodic memory and olfactory functions. Little is known about the possible role of ɛ4 in the association between ongoing episodic memory decline and olfactory deficits in the general population, but such information is relevant in determining the relevance of olfaction as a marker of DAT risk. The present study was based on a large, population-based sample (n=1087, aged 45-90 years, of which 324 were ɛ4-carriers). Episodic memory cha

Preservation of episodic memory in semantic dementia: The importance of regions beyond the medial temporal lobes.

Episodic memory impairment represents one of the hallmark clinical features of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) attributable to the degeneration of medial temporal and parietal regions of the brain. In contrast, a somewhat paradoxical profile of relatively intact episodic memory, particularly for non-verbal material, is observed in semantic dementia (SD), despite marked atrophy of the hippocampus. This retrospective study investigated the neural substrates of episodic memory retrieval in 20 patients with a diagnosis of SD and 21 disease-matched cases of AD and compared their performance

Exogenous features versus prior experiences modulate different subregions of the right IPL during episodic memory retrieval.

The fractionation view holds that distinct cognitive operations are mediated by subregions of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL). Within IPL, we hypothesised that retrieval-related activity in different parts of the right supramarginal gyrus (rSMG) may be modulated differentially by information acquired via different combinations of attention signals at encoding. We had two groups of participants watch a 42-min TV episode and, after a 24-hr delay, perform a temporal-order judgment task during fMRI. Each retrieval trial comprised three images presented sequentially, requiring participants to ju

The role of movement representation in episodic memory for actions: A study of patients with apraxia.

In attempting to memorize a sentence about an action, such as "Pick up the glass," performing the action (motor encoding) results in better memory performance than simply memorizing the words (verbal encoding). Such enhancement of memory is known as the enactment effect. Several theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon using concepts such as physical motor information associated with speed, form, amplitude of movement and/or movement representations involved in movement imaging, knowledge on manipulating tools, and spatial relationships in the enactment effect. However, there hav
