Osteoarthritis (OA), marked by articular cartilage degeneration, is significantly influenced by obesity, a major risk factor that promotes inflammation and oxidative stress. Sturgeon peptide (SP) is recognized for promoting collagen synthesis essential for cartilage health, while zinc possesses anti-inflammatory properties hampered by low bioavailability. Sturgeon peptide-chelated zinc (SPZ) was developed to overcome this limitation to enhance zinc delivery. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of SP, SPZ, and zinc gluconate in a rat model of obesity-induced OA (OBOA), established

BACKGROUND: Studies evaluating secondary meniscectomy rates and risk factors for failure of ramp repair are sparse and limited by small numbers and heterogeneity.
PURPOSES/HYPOTHESIS: The purposes were to determine the secondary meniscectomy rate for failure of ramp repair performed using a posteromedial portal suture hook at the time of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and to identify risk factors for secondary meniscectomy. It was hypothesized that patients who underwent ACLR combined with a lateral extra-articular procedure (LEAP) would experience significantly lower rates

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the relaxation time (T1Gd) of delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and grade of tibiofemoral joint space narrowing (JSN) and osteophytosis 11 years later, in a cohort of meniscectomized patients.
DESIGN: Patients (n = 45) aged 35-50 who had undergone an arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy 1-6 years earlier, due to degenerative meniscal tear, were examined using dGEMRIC. These patients had no cartilage changes defined as deep clefts or visible bone at the time of arthroscopy. Eleven years later (12-16 y

BACKGROUND: The Chondral Lesions and Meniscal Procedures (ChAMP) trial observed the effect of debridement on unstable chondral lesions (CLs) encountered during arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) while following a cohort with no CL to compare outcomes. At 5 years after APM, patients in the ChAMP Trial without unstable CLs had better outcomes than those with unstable CLs left in situ.
HYPOTHESIS: Patients without unstable CLs would have better outcomes than those with unstable CLs 9 years after APM.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study: Level of evidence, 2.
METHODS: The authors compared outcomes

The meniscus plays a critical role in maintaining knee joint stability, absorbing shock, and distributing load-bearing stress. Middle-aged individuals are prone to meniscal tears due to degenerative changes, while type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a prevalent chronic metabolic disorder, may impair cartilage healing and postoperative recovery, potentially compromising surgical outcomes. However, comparative evidence regarding arthroscopic meniscal repair versus partial meniscectomy in this specific population remains limited. This retrospective cohort study included 122 middle-aged patients with

OBJECTIVE: To assess the 5-year effects of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) vs. placebo surgery on the development of the structural changes of the knee by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
DESIGN: This multicentre, randomized, participant- and outcome-assessor-blinded, placebo-surgery-controlled trial was carried out in Finland. We randomized 146 adults, mean age 52 years (range 35 to 65) to undergo either APM or placebo surgery. The subjects had symptoms of degenerative medial meniscus tear, a tear verified in MRI and arthroscopy, and no advanced osteoarthritis at baseline. We compar

OBJECTIVE: Compare arthroscopic partial meniscectomy to a true sham intervention.
METHODS: Sham-controlled superiority trial performed in three county hospitals in Denmark comparing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy to skin incisions only in patients aged 35-55 years with persistent knee pain and an MRI-confirmed medial meniscus lesion. A computer-generated table of random numbers generated two comparison groups. Participants and outcome assessors were blinded to group allocation. Exclusions were locking knees, high-energy trauma or severe osteoarthritis. Outcomes were collected at baseline,

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies show similar outcome between surgery and conservative treatment in patients with non-obstructive meniscal tears. However, surgery is still often preferred over conservative treatment. When conservative treatment is non-inferior to surgery, shifting the current standard treatment choice to conservative treatment alone could save over €30 millions of direct medical costs on an annual basis. Economic evaluation studies comparing surgery to conservative treatment are lacking.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) with an economic evalua

BACKGROUND: Medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs) disrupt the integrity and hoop tension of the meniscus, leading to cartilage degeneration and accelerated osteoarthritis (OA) progression. The management of patients with MMPRT is controversial, and the efficacy of different treatment options is unclear.
PURPOSE: To compare the clinical, radiographic, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes of patients with MMPRT between trans-posterior cruciate ligament (trans-PCL) all-inside repair and partial meniscectomy.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

PURPOSE: To use the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database to identify risk factors for 30-day adverse events and hospital readmission following isolated and unilateral meniscectomy or meniscus repair.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the NSQIP database from the years 2012 to 2021 identified all patients undergoing isolated, unilateral meniscectomy or meniscus repair. Multivariable analyses were performed for each procedure to identify patient characteristics associated with any adverse event (AAE) or unplanned hospital readmission within 30 days of surgery.

In the past decade, increasing evidence supports knee lateral extra-articular tenodesis or anterolateral ligament reconstruction for anterolateral rotational instability in patients requiring anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Extra-articular augmentation reduces the risk of ACL graft failure, particularly in high-risk populations. Recent research shows a 3-fold lower risk of failure and a lower rate of secondary meniscectomy. Indications include revision ACL reconstruction, pivoting sports participation, high-grade pivot shift, hyperlaxity or knee hyperextension, anterolateral c

Sixty-six patients were reviewed after 70 therapeutic arthroscopy procedures. The procedures carried out included partial meniscectomy, removal of loose bodies, lateral release and synovial plica division. The commonest procedure performed was partial meniscectomy. The 32 patients undergoing arthroscopic meniscectomy were compared with a similar group of patients undergoing open meniscectomy as regards their duration of hospital stay, operation time and rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVES: It is disputed whether arthroscopic meniscectomy is an (cost-) effective treatment for degenerative meniscus tears in day-to-day clinical practice. The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of arthroscopic meniscectomy in subjects with knee osteoarthritis, in routine clinical practice, while taking into account the increased risk for future knee replacement surgery. We compared cost-effectiveness of arthroscopic meniscectomy compared to no surgery.
DESIGN: We used a state transition (Markov) simulation model to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of arthroscopic

To clarify the function of the menisci, dynamic contact pressure in femoro-tibial joints obtained from postmortem or surgical specimens with intact menisci, following partial and total meniscectomy was measured using transistor pressure transducers and Buldon tube pressure gauges. After meniscectomy, the peak contact pressure increased strikingly and contact area decreased markedly. The lower contact pressure after partial meniscectomy than after total meniscectomy is probably one reason why the results of partial meniscectomy are clinically much better than those of total meniscectomy. As noted through the work of Fairbank, total meniscectomy is not a benign operation. Cox et al found that meniscectomies in canine knees lead to gross and microscopic degenerative changes. They also noted that partial meniscectomies lead to less severe degenerative changes. They believed that there was a direct relationship between the degree of degenerative change and the amount of meniscus removed. McGinty et al reported early return to function with decreased morbidity and decreased complication rates after partial meniscectomy; this was compared to both open and arthroscopic techniques for
