Bilateral congenital separation of the lateral meniscus. A case report.

Reports of congenital abnormalities of the lateral meniscus include discoid meniscus, accessory meniscus, double-layered meniscus and ring-shaped meniscus. We present a rare case of an unusual abnormality of the bilateral lateral meniscus, which was completely separated and duplicated at the midportion, although different from an accessory meniscus, with an anomaly of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus as well as a double-layered medial meniscus. This type of abnormality of the lateral meniscus and double-layered medial meniscus has not previously been described in the literature. We hav

Meniscus repair: considerations in treatment and update of clinical results.

The meniscus plays an important role in the function of the knee. Preservation of the meniscus is preferred if possible when considering treatment of a meniscus tear. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the meniscus, the structure, the mechanics, and other factors of meniscal healing are critical when evaluating the torn meniscus for a reparative procedure. Many options for meniscus repair exist for the orthopaedist. Options such as open repair or arthroscopically-assisted inside-out techniques have long-term favorable results. The all-inside techniques are attractive because of the dec

[Diagnostic and therapeutic standard in meniscus lesions--results of a survey].

With a survey among surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons in German speaking countries the presently applied diagnostic and therapeutic schemes of meniscus lesions were investigated. In 322 questionnaires altogether 43.958 meniscus lesions were reported. In over 90% arthroscopy serves as diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Two thirds of the surgeons suture a longitudinal tear of the outer zone of the meniscus, all the other meniscus lesions were foremost treated by partial resection. The postoperative treatment after meniscus surgery is very inconsistent. Altogether less preserving meniscus operation

Arthroscopic studies of variants of the anterior horn of the medical meniscus.

The objective of this study was to arthroscopically analyse the morphology and dynamics of variants of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus of the knee (VAMM) and to then consider the pathological significance of these variants. VAMM was defined as knees in which the anterior horn of the medial meniscus is not attached to the tibia. Between April 1992 and March 1995, arthroscopy was performed on 953 knees of 903 patients. At the time of this examination, observation and probing were performed to determine the condition of the synovium, the synovial plica, the cartilage in all compartments,

[Arthroscopy: possibilities and limitations in the diagnosis and therapy of meniscus lesions].

The menisci consist of fibrocartilage and are an important supporting structure of the knee joint. They are poorly vascularized and have to withstand a high mechanical strain and load; therefore, lesions are common, especially on the medial side. Meniscal lesions are among the most frequent surgical procedures in orthopedic surgery. Meniscal lesions are diagnosed by a careful clinical examination in 80% of all cases in spite of modern imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the last 15 years, arthroscopic meniscectomy has become the 'golden standard' of therapy. Arthros

Natural healing of anterior and posterior attachments of the rabbit meniscus.

The natural healing capacity of the anterior or posterior medial meniscal attachment after radial transection and the effect of such procedures on knee joint cartilage were investigated in 28 skeletally mature New Zealand white rabbits. Either the anterior (n = 14) or the posterior attachment (n = 14) was radially transected in the right knee joint. Fifty percent of the rabbits with each procedure were euthanized at 6 weeks and 50% at 12 weeks. The histologic characteristics of the healing tissue were evaluated, including immunohistochemical demonstration of nerve fibers. Histologic changes in

The shape of the condyle and position of the meniscus in temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

The position of the meniscus seems to be significant in the natural history of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. It can be identified on MRI and arthrography but generally its displacement is referred to only in the sagittal plane. Little consideration is given to the shape and size of the condyle which could have great influence upon the position which the meniscus takes up. This paper reports the findings in 105 TM joints which have had arthrotomy for meniscoplasty (meniscopexy) and menisectomy over an 8-year period. Only 30% of the condyles had a normal size and shape; 24% were excavated

[Lesions of the extensor muscles of the knee caused by meniscus injury].

The damage of the knee extensors was examined with integrated EMG and with histochemical and electron microscopical methods in 23 patients with meniscal injury. The integrated DMG has proved in 2/3 of the patients tonic, in 1/3 both tonic and phasic damage of the muscle function. With histochemical examination the decrease of the ratio of the fibers of type 1 was found and also the atrophy of the same fibre type cells in 18-36 per cent. Ultrastructural examinations have shown out of the damage of the contractive elements an increase of the interstitial connective tissue together with alteratio

Transtibial fixation for medial meniscus posterior root tear reduces posterior extrusion and physiological translation of the medial meniscus in middle-aged and elderly patients.

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in meniscal extrusion during knee flexion before and after pullout fixation for medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) and determine whether these changes correlate with articular cartilage degeneration and short-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: Twenty-two patients (mean age 58.4 ± 8.2 years) diagnosed with type II MMPRT underwent open magnetic resonance imaging preoperatively, 3 months after transtibial fixation and at 12 months after surgery, when second-look arthroscopy was also performed. The medial meniscus medial extrusion (MMME) and the medial menis

Establishment of a Rat Pull-Out Repair Model Demonstrating Fibrous Meniscus-Bone Healing and Suppression of Meniscal Extrusion After Medial Meniscus Posterior Root Tear.

BACKGROUND: Medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) disrupts meniscal hoop tension and is associated with osteoarthritis progression. Although pull-out repair is a standard surgical technique for MMPRT, its precise healing process remains unclear. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to establish a rat model for MMPRT pull-out repair, investigating its biomechanical and histological healing and its effect on medial meniscus extrusion (MME). It was hypothesized that pull-out repair would show reduced MME and restore biomechanical property toward normal. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory

Additive Manufacturing of Nanoscale Multimaterial Voxels Via Meniscus-Confined Electrodeposition.

Advanced applications featuring sub-microscale and nanoscale metallic structures, which include energy storage devices, nanophotonic elements, and nanoelectronic interfaces, require three-dimensional multimaterial structural elements. Here, we present an approach for highly localized meniscus-confined electrodeposition based on double-barrel nanopipettes capable of producing high-aspect ratio metallic structures with a wide range of elemental compositions. This is enabled by the possibility of finely tuning local ionic content directly inside the liquid meniscus by applying voltage bias betwee

Relationship Between Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury and Meniscus-Bone Angle.

BACKGROUND: The meniscus-bone angle (MBA), defined as the angle formed by the lateral meniscus with respect to the lateral tibial slope, has recently been identified as an intrinsic factor associated with primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, no studies have investigated the influence of MBA and other intrinsic factors excluding the influence of extrinsic factors, especially the level of sports activity. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to evaluate the intrinsic factors of primary ACL injury while controlling for the effect of sports activity level. It was hypothesize

Hypermobile lateral meniscus: A systematic review of current treatment options.

PURPOSE: The reliable data on the incidence of hypermobile lateral meniscus (HLM) and its clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches are limited. This systematic study aimed to review available treatment options for HLM and the outcomes of each approach. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in four electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science) to identify studies in which arthroscopically confirmed cases of HLM were treated surgically or nonsurgically, and the required data comprising study characteristics, patient data, treatment approaches a

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With Transtibial Medial Meniscus Root Repair.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries has rapidly increased. Patients with ACL injuries frequently present with concomitant meniscal pathologies. Posterior medial meniscal root tears (PMMR) are less commonly seen with acute ACL injuries as compared with lateral tears and are often degenerative in nature or more rarely in an acute setting. Clinical studies have demonstrated medial meniscal deficiency to be a significant risk factor for graft failure and poor postoperative clinical outcomes. As such, given its demonstrated efficacy, there has been growing interes

Serial ultrasonographic imaging can predict failure after meniscus allograft transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment monitoring after meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT) is challenging. Ultrasonographic (US) imaging has been proposed as a modality that may allow for treatment monitoring after MAT, but has yet to be clinically validated for this purpose. The objective of this study was to assess the capabilities for serial US imaging during the first year after surgery to predict short-term MAT failure. METHODS: Patients who had undergone Meniscus-only or Meniscus-Tibia MAT for treatment of medial or lateral meniscus deficiency were prospectively evaluated by US imaging at variou
