The COVID-19 vaccine did not affect the basal immune response and menstruation in female athletes.

The COVID-19 pandemic restricted the regular training and competition program of athletes. Vaccines against COVID-19 are known to be beneficial for the disease; however, the unknown side effects of vaccines and postvaccination reactions have made some athletes hesitant to get vaccinated. We investigated the changes in inflammatory responses and menstrual cycles of female athletes before and after vaccination. Twenty female athletes were enrolled in this study. Blood was collected from each subject before the first COVID-19 vaccination and after the first and second vaccinations. Laboratory dat

The signals and molecular pathways involved in human menstruation, a unique process of tissue destruction and remodelling.

Human endometrium is a specialized tissue that undergoes sequential phases of proliferation and secretory changes in order to support the implantation and growth of an embryo. If implantation does not occur, this tissue rapidly undergoes dissolution during the menstrual period. Tissue shedding during menstruation is associated with significant apoptosis, disordered expression of adhesion molecules, loss of filamentous (F) actin from cell borders and fragmentation of endometrial glands. On the other hand, compromise of integrity of vessels and dissolution of the extracellular matrix leads to bl

[Iron levels in 1359 Danish women in relation to menstruation, use of oral contraceptives and parity].

Iron status was assessed by measuring serum ferritin and haemoglobin in a population survey in Copenhagen County, comprising 1359 nonpregnant women in age cohorts of 30, 40, 50, and 60 years; 809 were premenopausal and 550 postmenopausal. Premenopausal women had lower serum ferritin (median 37 micrograms/l) than postmenopausal women (median 71 micrograms/l), p < 0.0001. Of premenopausal women, 17.7% had ferritin < 15 micrograms/l (depleted iron stores), and 23.1% had ferritin levels of 15-30 micrograms/l (small iron stores). Corresponding figures in postmenopausal women were 3.3% and 10.3%. Ir

Role of HMGB1/RAGE axis in endometrial repair: evidence from the rat model of induced menstruation.

IN BRIEF: Endometrial repair occurs concurrently with breakdown in the absence of steroid hormones. This study investigated the role of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) as an alarmin, released during endometrial breakdown, in endometrial repair through its receptor RAGE. ABSTRACT: Menstruation in humans involves a sequelae of inflammatory events. Endometrial repair occurs concomitantly with the breakdown of the endometrium. Menstrual fluid (MF) components are known to promote endometrial repair. HMGB1 protein has been identified in MF and has implications in wound repair in several cell type

A Novel Method to Repair Thin Endometrium and Restore Fertility Based on Menstruation-Derived Stem Cell.

Thin endometrium (TE), which mainly occurs as a result of severe damage to the endometrial basalis, is one of the prominent etiologies of menstrual abnormalities, infertility, and recurrent miscarriage in women. Previous studies have demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered ideal cells with multipotency for regenerative medicine and exhibit therapeutic effects on TE through their cellular secretions. However, there is limited research on strategies to enhance MSC secretion to improve their therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we isolated menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem

Risk of Gonococcal Infection During Vaginal Exposure is Associated With High Vaginal pH and Active Menstruation.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the biological reasons why 25% to 35% of women resist infection during vaginal intercourse with a man infected with Neisseria gonorrhoeae could lead to novel control measures. We sought modifiable biological bases for infection resistance by comparing women in the same core-mixing group who did or did not become infected after sexual exposure. METHODS: We enrolled 61 female contacts of index men with gonorrhea seen at Baltimore City Health Department clinics from January 2008 through May 2012. Exposure and sexual practices and histories, co-infections, physical

Iron status in Danish women aged 35-65 years. Relation to menstruation and method of contraception.

Iron status was assessed by serum (S-) ferritin and hemoglobin (Hb) in a population survey comprising 883 non-gravid Danish women in age cohorts of 35, 45, 55, and 65 years. Premenopausal women (n = 676) had lower S-ferritin, median 42 micrograms/l, than postmenopausal women (n = 207), median 80 micrograms/l (p < 0.0001). Of premenopausal women, 12.1% had S-ferritin < or = 20 micrograms/l (i.e. depleted iron stores), and 35.6% S-ferritin of 21-40 micrograms/l (i.e. small iron stores). Corresponding figures in postmenopausal women were 0.5% and 13.2%. Premenopausal blood donors (n = 88) had low

School absenteeism during menstruation among adolescent girls in Southern Uganda: A multi-level risk factors analysis.

Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) continues to be a major barrier impacting adolescent girls' school attendance in low-income countries. In Uganda, only 10 % of adolescent girls practice adequate MHM; and they miss an estimated 11 % of school days due to menstruation. Missing school (school absenteeism) has been associated with negative educational and social outcomes. This paper aimed to explore the individual, family, school and community-level factors associated with school absenteeism among adolescent girls during menstruation. We used crosssectional (baseline) data from 1,237 adolescent

Markers of human endometrial hypoxia can be detected in vivo and ex vivo during physiological menstruation.

STUDY QUESTION: Can markers of human endometrial hypoxia be detected at menstruation in vivo? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our in vivo data support the presence of hypoxia in menstrual endometrium of women during physiological menstruation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Current evidence from animal models and human in vitro studies suggests endometrial hypoxia is present at menstruation and drives endometrial repair post menses. However, detection of human endometrial hypoxia in vivo remains elusive. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: We performed a prospective case study of 16 women with normal menstrual bleeding.

Assessment of Knowledge and Awareness about Gingival and Periodontal Changes in Women during Menstruation - An Evaluative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Sex hormones play an important role in the health of women's periodontal structures throughout their lives. Under both physiological and pathological conditions, such as hormonal therapy or the use of oral contraceptives; women, in particular, experience hormonal fluctuation. It is quite undeniable that periodontal symptoms emerge when these steroid hormones are out of equilibrium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey based on a questionnaire was conducted, including 462 women within the age range of 18-35 years. Twenty four questions on the subject of periodontal cha

When Menstruation Meets the Pleura: A Rare Case of Catamenial Hemothorax and Thoracic Endometriosis and a Literature Review.

Catamenial hemothorax is a rare manifestation of thoracic endometriosis, characterized by blood in the pleural cavity associated with menstrual cycles. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman with recurrent right-sided chest pain and dyspnea coinciding with menstruation. Imaging revealed a large pleural effusion and hemothorax. Diagnostic video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) confirmed thoracic endometriosis. The patient received a combination of hormonal therapy and VATS. Follow-ups over 36 months showed significant symptom improvement and resolution of pleural effusion. This case em

Serum iron availability, but not iron stores, is lower in naturally menstruating than in oral contraceptive athletes.

This study measured serum markers of iron status in naturally menstruating and oral contraceptive (OC) athletes during the main hormonal milieus of these two profiles to identify potential differences confounding the diagnosis of iron deficiency in female athletes. Resting blood samples were collected from 36 naturally menstruating athletes during the early-follicular phase (EFP), mid- late-follicular phase (MLFP) and mid-luteal phase (MLP) of the menstrual cycle. Simultaneously, blood samples were collected from 24 OC athletes during the withdrawal and active-pill phase of the OC cycle. Serum
