Mobile enhanced prevention support for people leaving jail: examining smartphone app integration with peer mentors and contingency management for a population at risk of HIV.

The period following community reentry from incarceration is associated with elevated risks of drug overdose, HIV transmission, and other harms. The importance of leveraging mobile technology to facilitate service access has grown with smartphone use. Peer navigation has shown efficacy for individuals at risk of HIV transmission. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 19 individuals assigned male at birth (all who have sex with men) who were participants in a randomized controlled trial to test an intervention combining the three above components. Three peer mentors were also interv

Where there is no nurse: an observational study of large-scale mentoring of auxiliary nurses to improve quality of care during childbirth at primary health centres in India.

OBJECTIVE: Clinician scarcity in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) often results in de facto task shifting; this raises concerns about the quality of care. This study examines if a long-term mentoring programme improved the ability of auxiliary nurse-midwives (ANMs), who function as paramedical community health workers, to provide quality care during childbirth, and how they compared with staff nurses. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental post-test with matched comparison group. SETTING: Primary health centres (PHC) in the state of Bihar, India; a total of 239 PHCs surveyed and matched analysis b

"Adolescents do not only require ARVs and adherence counseling": A qualitative investigation of health care provider experiences with an HIV youth peer mentoring program in Ndola, Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) living with HIV face unique challenges and have poorer health outcomes than adults with HIV. Project YES! was a youth-led initiative to promote HIV self-management and reduce stigma among AYAs in four Ndola, Zambia clinics. Clinic health care providers (HCPs) were involved in multiple intervention aspects, including serving as expert resources during AYA and caregiver group meetings, facilitating resistance test-based AYA antiretroviral drug changes, meeting with participants referred through a safety protocol, and guiding a subset of participa

Prevalence and associated factors of depression and anxiety among doctoral students: the mediating effect of mentoring relationships on the association between research self-efficacy and depression/anxiety.

PURPOSE: Although the mental health status of doctoral students deserves attention, few scholars have paid attention to factors related to their mental health problems. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression and anxiety in doctoral students and examine possible associated factors. We further aimed to assess whether mentoring relationships mediate the association between research self-efficacy and depression/anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 325 doctoral students in a medical university. The Patient Health Questionnaire 9 and Generalized Anxiety Disord

Evaluating the Effects of a Rent Subsidy and Mentoring Intervention for Youth Transitioning Out of Homelessness: Protocol for a Mixed Methods, Community-Based Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the risk factors associated with young people entering and becoming entrenched in street life have been thoroughly investigated, peer-reviewed evidence is scarce to nonexistent for rigorous interventions targeting social integration outcomes for young people who have experienced homelessness. From the limited research that has been done, emerging evidence signals that, although structural supports such as subsidized housing and social service providers are important, these resources alone are insufficient to help young people integrate into the mainstream society. OBJECTI

Getting unstuck from a stagnant career: examining the role of perceived mentor proactivity in the relationship between protégés career plateaus and workplace avoidance behavior.

Drawing on affective events theory, this study examines how protégés' career plateaus influence workplace avoidance behavior through job frustration and how perceived mentor proactivity shapes this process. Using a three-wave, time-lagged, multi-source design with data collected from 401 mentor-protégé dyads in the service sector, the findings show that both hierarchical plateauing and job-content plateauing increase protégés' job frustration, which subsequently promotes workplace avoidance behavior. The results further reveal that perceived mentor proactivity weakens the positive relationship

Editorial Commentary: Our Mentors Were Right, New Is Not Always Better: The Posterolateral Shoulder Trans-Rotator Cuff Portal Is Safe for SLAP Repairs.

Shoulder SLAP repair anchors have traditionally been placed through a posterolateral trans-rotator cuff "Port of Wilmington" portal. Alternative anterolateral portals have been proposed to place superior glenoid anchors that seemingly avoid traversing the rotator cuff via the rotator interval but put the suprascapular nerve at risk. A recent cadaveric study demonstrated that the traditional posterolateral portal safely traversed the infraspinatus muscle belly in all specimens, which was in contrast to the anterolateral portal that traversed the supraspinatus tendon in all specimens. In additio

Single-Center, Long-Term Experience with Mentor Contour Profile Gel Implants: What Can We Learn after 21 Years of Follow-Up?

BACKGROUND: The difficulty in obtaining long-term data with the use of breast implants is well known. The majority of available data are from multicenter studies with different surgical techniques, and different implants. METHODS: The authors provide retrospective 10-year study data (2001 to 2011) with Mentor Contour Profile Gel implants after a mean of 13 years of follow-up, in the first single-center study of such size and length. This study included 835 patients with 1674 Mentor implants across 6 surgery types, all of them performed with a consistent surgical technique developed by the sen

Harnessing peer mentorship as a tool to turn human resource for health brain drain into brain gain: a case study of a Nigerian peer-mentored research group.

BACKGROUND: Peer mentorship can be a potential tool to reduce the disparities in health research capacity between high- and low- and middle-income countries. This case study describes the potential of peer mentorship to tackle two critical issues: bridging health research capacity of doctors from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the transformation of human resource for health brain drain into "brain gain". CASE PRESENTATION: In 2021, a virtual peer mentorship group was established by 16 alumni of the University of Benin College of Medical Sciences' 2008 graduating class, residing

When theory beats practice: the implementation of competency-based education at healthcare workplaces : Focus group interviews with students, mentors, and educators of six healthcare disciplines.

BACKGROUND: Work-integrated learning constitutes a large part of current healthcare education. During the last decades, a competency-based educational (CBE) approach has been introduced to reduce the theory-practice gap and to promote continuous competency development. Different frameworks and models have been developed to support CBE implementation in practice. Although CBE is now well-established, implementation at healthcare workplaces remains complex and controversial. This study aims to explore how students, mentors, and educators from different healthcare disciplines perceive the impleme

Cultivating the Apprentice-Mentor Model for Minimally Invasive Gynaecology in the Era of Surgically Scarce Training: A Case Report of Laparoscopic Cornuostomy for Interstitial Ectopic Pregnancy by a Trainee.

Over the last few years, there is an apparent growing concern amongst O&G trainees of the inadequacy in exposure to minimally invasive gynaecology surgical training, which has been inadvertently compounded by the more stringent working hour regulations and disproportionately increasing number of trainees relative to surgical volume. Therefore, it is vitally important for trainees to maximise opportunities in the operating theatre and develop autonomy in carrying out more complex surgical procedures. This case report outlines the step-by-step approach of laparoscopic excision of a cornual ectop

Mothers' AdvocateS In the Community (MOSAIC)--non-professional mentor support to reduce intimate partner violence and depression in mothers: a cluster randomised trial in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Effective interventions to increase safety and wellbeing of mothers experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) are scarce. As much attention is focussed on professional intervention, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of non-professional mentor support in reducing IPV and depression among pregnant and recent mothers experiencing, or at risk of IPV. METHODS: MOSAIC was a cluster randomised trial in 106 primary care (maternal and child health nurse and general practitioner) clinics in Melbourne, Australia. 63/106 clinics referred 215 eligible culturally and linguistic

Risk and protective factors for alcohol use among pregnant African-American, Hispanic, and white adolescents: the influence of peers, sexual partners, family members, and mentors.

Factors affecting the drinking patterns of 183 pregnant, African-American, Hispanic, and White adolescents were investigated, including the influence of peers, sexual partners, family members, and mentors. Among participants who drank alcohol prior to their pregnancies, 87% quit or cut back on their drinking behaviors. Those adolescents who lived in environments where their partners, peers, and relatives were drinking and using drugs were more likely to have consumed alcohol in the previous month, while adolescents who identified mentors and/or parents who provided high levels of support were

"A bond as strong as a lock and chain": Youth of color in low-income communities use photovoice to theorize developmentally nurturing processes of their cross-age mentoring programs.

Youth of color experiencing low-income in the United States face multiple human rights violations: overpolicing, community violence, racial discrimination, and insufficient voice in the programs and policies that impact their current and future lives. To accomplish transitional justice, participatory processes are needed that elicit youths' cultural strengths and wisdom about themselves, their social conditions, services they find helpful, and why those services are helpful. This study highlights findings from a photovoice that elicited youths' perspectives about a cross-age mentoring out-of-s

National Study of Childhood Traumatic Events and Adolescent and Adult Criminal Justice Involvement Risk: Evaluating the Protective Role of Social Support From Mentors During Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: With nearly 11 million people in the United States arrested in 2015, the need to identify antecedent risk factors driving criminal justice involvement (CJI) and possible mitigating factors is crucial. This study examines the relation between childhood trauma and CJI in adolescence and adulthood and assesses how this relation is moderated by mentoring during young adulthood. METHODS: The analysis included 3 waves of data-adolescents, young adults, and adults-collected from 1995 to 2008 from 12,288 adolescents who participated in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult
