The physiological mechanism underlying root elongation in response to nitrogen deficiency in crop plants.

In response to low nitrogen stress, multiple hormones together with nitric oxide signaling pathways work synergistically and antagonistically in crop root elongation. Changing root morphology allows plants to adapt to soil nutrient availability. Nitrogen is the most important essential nutrient for plant growth. An important adaptive strategy for crops responding to nitrogen deficiency is root elongation, thereby accessing increased soil space and nitrogen resources. Multiple signaling pathways are involved in this regulatory network, working together to fine-tune root elongation in response t

Plant chimeras: The good, the bad, and the 'Bizzaria'.

Chimeras - organisms that are composed of cells of more than one genotype - captured the human imagination long before they were formally described and used in the laboratory. These organisms owe their namesake to a fire-breathing monster from Greek mythology that has the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent. The first description of a non-fictional chimera dates back to the middle of the seventeenth century when the Florentine gardener Pietro Nati discovered an adventitious shoot growing from the graft junction between sour orange (Citrus aurantium) and citron (Citrus

Programmable nanocarriers for precision plant engineering: converging nanotechnology, CRISPR, and next-generation breeding.

The convergence of nanotechnology and genome editing in plant sciences is redefining modern precision breeding through efficient, transgene free, tissue culture independent pathways for genetic improvement in crops. Conventional breeding and transgenic tools are limited to genotype dependency, inefficient gene delivery, unpredictable transgene insertions, thereby restricting their application in elite germplasm. Nanoparticles-mediated gene delivery systems have revolutionized the genetic transformation in plants through targeted and transgene free delivery of CRISPR/Cas ribonucleoproteins (RNP

Leaf anatomical traits support classification of Galphimioid clades in Malpighiaceae.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Laticifers represent one of the most functionally striking secretory systems in angiosperms, characterizing entire families and being the latex considered a key element in defense against herbivores in plants. However, they are still understudied, especially in clades where the secretions are not so copious, which is the case of the Malpighiaceae. Here, we undertake a study combining anatomy, phylogeny, ancestral state reconstruction to unravel the structure, distribution, and evolution of laticifers and other leaf anatomical traits in Galphimioid clade (Malpighiaceae), sa

Functional characterization and expression patterns of PnATX genes under different abiotic stress treatments in Populus.

The copper chaperone ATX1 has been investigated previously in the herbaceous plants Arabidopsis and rice. However, the molecular mechanisms of ATX1 underlying copper transport and functional characteristics in the woody plant Populus are poorly understood. In this study, PnATX1 and PnATX2 of Populus simonii × P. nigra were identified and characterized. Sequence analysis showed that PnATXs contained the metal-binding motif MXCXXC in the N-terminus and a lysine-rich region. Phylogenetic analysis of ATX protein sequences revealed that PnATXs were clustered in the same group as AtATX1. PnATX prote

The Arabidopsis Rho of plants GTPase AtROP6 functions in developmental and pathogen response pathways.

How plants coordinate developmental processes and environmental stress responses is a pressing question. Here, we show that Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) Rho of Plants6 (AtROP6) integrates developmental and pathogen response signaling. AtROP6 expression is induced by auxin and detected in the root meristem, lateral root initials, and leaf hydathodes. Plants expressing a dominant negative AtROP6 (rop6(DN)) under the regulation of its endogenous promoter are small and have multiple inflorescence stems, twisted leaves, deformed leaf epidermis pavement cells, and differentially organized cyto

Determinate primary root growth as an adaptation to aridity in Cactaceae: towards an understanding of the evolution and genetic control of the trait.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Species of Cactaceae are well adapted to arid habitats. Determinate growth of the primary root, which involves early and complete root apical meristem (RAM) exhaustion and differentiation of cells at the root tip, has been reported for some Cactoideae species as a root adaptation to aridity. In this study, the primary root growth patterns of Cactaceae taxa from diverse habitats are classified as being determinate or indeterminate, and the molecular mechanisms underlying RAM maintenance in Cactaceae are explored. Genes that were induced in the primary root of Stenocereus gu

Hormonal regulation of tissue-specific ectopic expression of an Arabidopsis endoplasmic reticulum-type omega-3 fatty acid desaturase (FAD3) gene.

A common feature of the membrane lipids of higher plants is a large content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which typically consist of dienoic and trienoic fatty acids. Two types of omega-3 fatty acid desaturase. which are present in the plastids and in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), respectively, are responsible for the conversion of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids. To establish a system for investigating the tissue-specific, and hor-mone-regulated expression of the ER-type desaturase gene (FAD3), transgenic plants of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Direct Plant Regeneration From Immature Male Inflorescence of Banana (Musa spp.).

Banana (Musa spp.) is a globally important horticultural crop that faces significant challenges from pests and diseases, which threaten yield and long-term sustainability. The efficient production of clean, disease-free planting material is essential for both commercial plantations and small-holder systems. This paper presents a rapid and reproducible protocol for direct plant regeneration from immature male inflorescences of banana. The method involves surface sterilization of immature male flowers, longitudinal dissection, and culture on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 6-be

The history and current status of glyphosate.

Glyphosate is the only herbicide to target the enzyme 5-enolpyruvyl-3-shikimate phosphate synthase (EPSPS). It is a high use rate, non-selective herbicide that translocates primarily to metabolic sinks, killing meristematic tissues away from the application site. Its phloem-mobile properties and slow action in killing weeds allow the herbicide to move throughout the plant to kill all meristems, making it effective for perennial weed control. Since commercialization in 1974, its use has grown to dominate the herbicide market. Much of its use is on transgenic, glyphosate-resistant crops (GRCs),

Expression profiling of the gibberellin 2-oxidase gene CsGA2ox2 (Cucumis sativus L.) reveals stage- and tissue-specific transcript accumulation during fruit development.

BACKGROUND: Gibberellins (GAs) regulate fruit set and expansion, and their endogenous levels are controlled in part through catabolic inactivation. GA2ox enzymes convert bioactive GAs into inactive forms, but the expression of GA2ox genes during cucumber fruit development has not been characterised in a tissue-resolved manner. METHODS: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) '9930' fruit were sampled at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pollination. The inner fleshy tissue (pulp) and the outer fruit wall (pericarp) were separated, and CsGA2ox2 transcript abundance was quantified by quantitative real-time

Thirty years of plant farnesylation research: Few substrates, many gaps, and a clear path forward.

Protein farnesylation - the covalent attachment of a 15-carbon farnesyl isoprenoid to a C-terminal CaaX motif by protein farnesyltransferase (PFT, FTase) - is one of the most functionally important post-translational modifications in eukaryotic biology. In mammals, the biomedical significance of farnesylation is well established. The FTase inhibitor (FTI) lonafarnib treats Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. FTase remains an oncology target, and chemical proteomic strategies have mapped more than 100 farnesylated substrates at single-protein resolution. In plants, genetic evidence establishe

Genome-wide identification of tomato B-RRs gene family and expression analysis in response to ABA and drought.

B-type Response Regulators (B-RRs) play a crucial regulatory role in cytokinin signal transduction and are significant for plant development and stress resistance. However, studies on B-RRs in tomato are limited. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the B-RRs gene family in tomato. A total of 10 genes encoding B-RRs transcription factors (named as SlRR1 to SlRR10) were identified. We analyzed the structure, chromosomal localization, phylogeny, protein motifs, and expression levels of these B-RRs genes. Gene structure analysis revealed that the B-RRs genes in tomato possess b

Green synthesised zinc oxide nanoparticles mitigate salinity-induced oxidative stress in Vigna radiata L.

The productivity of the important dietary legume mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) is severely constrained by abiotic stress, specifically soil salinisation driven by climate variability. To address this challenge, this study evaluated the potential of a novel nanotechnology formulation based on the cyanobacterium Chroococcus minor for the green synthesis and capping of biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (CmZnONPs) to alleviate salt stress. The biomolecules of C. minor successfully stabilised and capped well-dispersed zinc oxide nanoparticles: UV-vis spectroscopy confirmed a characteristic peak at 34

Parasitic-Plant Parasite Rewires Flowering Pathways to Induce Stem-Derived Galls.

Gall-inducing insects manipulate host plant development, redirecting cellular fate and physiological processes to form novel structures. This phenomenon is even more intriguing when the host itself is a holoparasitic plant with minimal photosynthetic capacity. In the stem of Cuscuta campestris, the weevil Smicronyx madaranus forms galls that unexpectedly activate photosynthesis, in contrast to the typical suppression of photosynthetic activity observed in leaf-derived galls. This reversal of the usual source-to-sink transition highlights a unique form of insect-induced organogenesis. To elucid

AINTEGUMENTA-LIKE genes regulate reproductive growth and bud dormancy in Platanus acerifolia.

Platanus acerifolia AIL genes PaAIL5a/b and PaAIL6b participate in FT-AP1/FUL-AIL pathways to regulate bud dormancy. In addition, PaAIL6a/b can promote flowering, and PaAIL5b and PaAIL6b affect floral development. Bud dormancy and floral induction are essential processes for perennial plants, they are both regulated by photoperiod, temperature, and hormones, indicating the existence of common regulators for both processes. AINTEGUMENTA-LIKE (AIL) genes regulate reproductive growth of annual plants, including floral induction and flower development, and their homologs in poplar and grape act do

Over-expression of a NAC 67 transcription factor from finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.) confers tolerance against salinity and drought stress in rice.

BACKGROUND: NAC proteins (NAM (No apical meristem), ATAF (Arabidopsis transcription activation factor) and CUC (cup-shaped cotyledon)) are plant-specific transcription factors reported to be involved in regulating growth, development and stress responses. Salinity responsive transcriptome profiling in a set of contrasting finger millet genotypes through RNA-sequencing resulted in the identification of a NAC homolog (EcNAC 67) exhibiting differential salinity responsive expression pattern. METHODS: Full length cDNA of EcNAC67 was isolated, characterized and validated for its role in abiotic st

Increased heat requirement for leaf flushing in temperate woody species over 1980-2012: effects of chilling, precipitation and insolation.

Recent studies have revealed large unexplained variation in heat requirement-based phenology models, resulting in large uncertainty when predicting ecosystem carbon and water balance responses to climate variability. Improving our understanding of the heat requirement for spring phenology is thus urgently needed. In this study, we estimated the species-specific heat requirement for leaf flushing of 13 temperate woody species using long-term phenological observations from Europe and North America. The species were defined as early and late flushing species according to the mean date of leaf flu
