Sudden retinal manifestations of intranasal cocaine and methamphetamine abuse.

We examined two patients who had sudden decrease in vision after intranasal cocaine or methamphetamine abuse. A 38-year-old woman with a history of systemic arterial hypertension developed a central retinal artery occlusion four hours after intranasal use of cocaine. A 26-year-old woman had blurred vision and intraretinal hemorrhages shortly after using methamphetamine nasally. The adrenomimetic response and sudden increase in blood pressure associated with the intranasal use of these drugs may have contributed to the retinal vascular manifestations observed in these patients.

Ascorbic acid-deficient condition alters central effects of methamphetamine.

Effects of multiple doses of methamphetamine (METH) were examined in normal and ascorbic acid-deficient (scorbutic) guinea pigs. METH-induced decreases of striatal serotonin concentrations were completely antagonized in scorbutic animals. Elevations of nigral substance P-like immunoreactivity also differed significantly in METH-treated scorbutic compared to METH-treated normal animals. Various lines of evidence indicate that dopamine is an essential mediator of METH-induced effects in both serotonergic and substance P systems in the brain areas examined; however, results from the present study

Perinatal cocaine and methamphetamine exposure: maternal and neonatal correlates.

Maternal and neonatal growth, behavior, and physiologic organization were evaluated in 104 mother-infant pairs with positive results of urine toxicology screens. ANOVA comparison of cocaine, methamphetamine, and cocaine plus methamphetamine groups revealed no significant differences in perinatal variables. The Finnegan withdrawal scoring scheme demonstrated that all three groups of infants had altered neonatal behavioral patterns, characterized by abnormal sleep patterns, poor feeding, tremors, and hypertonia. Infants exposed to cocaine or methamphetamine or both were combined and compared wit

Amaurosis fugax and retinal vasculitis associated with methamphetamine inhalation.

A 26-year-old male drug abuser developed amaurosis fugax followed by retinal vasculitis in the right eye after nasal inhalation of methamphetamine. He gradually recovered, but required prolonged systemic corticosteroid therapy. We believe that the amaurosis fugax was due to drug-induced vasospasm and that the retinal vasculitis was a drug-induced hypersensitivity vasculitis.

Attitudes and experiences with fentanyl contamination of methamphetamine: exploring self-reports and urine toxicology among persons who use methamphetamine and other drugs.

BACKGROUND: There are growing concerns about illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) contamination of methamphetamine. This study aims to characterize the lay views and experiences with IMF-contaminated methamphetamine (IMF/meth) and identify participants with unknown IMF exposures through urine toxicology analysis. METHODS: Between December-2019 and November-2021, structured interviews were conducted with 91 individuals who reported past 30-day use of methamphetamine and resided in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Lab-based urine toxicology analyses were conducted to identify fentanyl/analogs, methamphetami

Identification of SAA1 in extracellular vesicles contribute to methamphetamine withdrawal.

Anxiety and depression-like symptoms are highly prevalent among methamphetamine (MA) users, particularly during the acute withdrawal (AW) phase, which plays a crucial role in the high relapse rates observed in this population. Despite their clinical importance, the mechanisms driving these withdrawal symptoms remain largely unclear. In this study, we focused on the plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the MA users during the acute withdrawal (MA-AW EVs). Our findings demonstrate that the transplantation of MA-AW EVs induces anxiety and depression-like behaviors in mice, suggesting a direct l

The Effect and Mechanism of Magnesium Valproate on Methamphetamine-Addicted Rats.

Valproate may hold promise as a treatment for addiction. However, there are limited studies examining the effects of magnesium valproate (VPA-Mg) on methamphetamine (MA) addiction, and the relevant mechanisms have not been thoroughly discussed. This study aims to explore the potential therapeutic effects of VPA-Mg on MA addiction and to investigate its possible mechanisms. The effects of VPA-Mg on MA addiction were investigated using conditioned place preference (CPP) and behavioural sensitisation models in rats. VPA-Mg was administered during CPP formation and extinction phases to evaluate it

Assessing fentanyl and methamphetamine in air and on surfaces of transit vehicles.

Recently, the misuse of fentanyl and methamphetamine has increased in the United States. These drugs can be consumed via smoking a powder, which can subsequently contaminate air and surfaces with drug residue. With limited access to safe consumption sites, this misuse often occurs in public spaces such as public transit, leading to potential secondhand exposures among transit operators and riders. In the Pacific Northwest, transit operators have reported acute health symptoms and safety concerns regarding these drug exposures. Researchers conducted an exposure assessment, sampling air and surf

The Effect of N-Acetylcysteine on Behavioral Sensitization to Methamphetamine in Mice.

Behavioral sensitization is a phenomenon occurring after repeated administration of various psychotropic substances and it is characterized by gradually increasing response to the particular drug. It has been described for majority of addictive substances including amphetamines. It is considered to reinstate drug-seeking behaviour and plays important role in the processes associated with drug abuse and addiction. There are published reports, particularly on preclinical level, that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) may affect addictive properties of different classes of drugs (e.g., cocaine, heroin, alcoh

Characterizing impulsivity in individuals with methamphetamine and methcathinone use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) are characterized by loss of control in drug use, such as increased impulsivity. Methamphetamine and methcathinone are psychostimulants, the use of which is accompanied by a high level of impulsivity. Whether individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) and methcathinone use disorder (MCUD) differ in different aspects of impulsivity is unclear. METHODS: We investigated impulsivity traits and behaviors in individuals with MUD and MCUD. The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS), and delay discounting tas

Death Due to Caffeine and Methamphetamine Toxicity: A Case Report.

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is an over-the-counter psychostimulant that, when used in appropriate amounts, is generally considered safe. However, excessive use can cause various symptoms and, in severe cases, can even be life-threatening. A 34-year-old man with a reported history of psychiatric disorders was found unresponsive at his girlfriend's house and transported to an emergency department. He was presumed to have taken several caffeine pills and was pronounced dead approximately six hours later. There was no evidence of trauma or natural diseases at autopsy. Toxicology testing on

The impact of methamphetamine on liver injury in Iraqi male addicts.

Methamphetamine (METH) is a powerful stimulant that affects neurochemical processes controlling heart rate, appetite, blood pressure, body temperature, and wakefulness, making it highly susceptible to abuse. Liver enzymes such as ALT, AST, ALP, and GGT are crucial for liver function. Albumin, a protein synthesized by healthy liver cells, serves as an indicator of chronic liver disease. Additionally, hepatocytes produce bile acids, which are essential for the secretion of bile salts into the bile canaliculi. Disruption in this secretion results in the accumulation of bile salts in the canalicul

Disruption of regional homogeneity in the brains of chronic methamphetamine users.

Previous studies have reported evidence supporting structural and functional alterations in the brains of methamphetamine (MA) users. The aim of the present study was to extend current knowledge regarding brain function(s) in MA users by examining regional homogeneity (ReHo). Chronic MA users (51 male, 46 female), who were undergoing supervised abstinence for 12 to 621 days, and 79 healthy controls (43 male, 36 female) underwent resting-state functional brain magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-wise whole-brain scale group differences in ReHo were examined. The mean ReHo values of significant cl
