Revisiting plant-microbe interaction mechanisms for developing efficient biostimulants.

The diverse and often complex challenges arising from climate change, severe soil degradation and agricultural intensification due to increased use of synthetic agrochemicals, have exacerbated the need for sustainable agricultural systems that can sustain crop productivity with less reliance on agrochemicals. Plant microbe interactions really help in this transition as they influence plant growth, nutrient access, adaptation to stress, and defense against pathogens. Plants interact with many belowground microbes in the rhizosphere through an incredibly diverse set of root exudates that act as

Microbial volatile organic compounds in plant defense: mechanisms, signaling networks, and agricultural applications.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) are low-molecular-weight metabolites released by bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere. mVOCs have emerged as important mediators of plant-microbes' communication and systemic defense priming. This review covers current knowledge of the biochemical diversity of the mVOCs, encompassing major classes of mVOCs, and their mechanisms of action in plant defense. We delineate the molecular signaling cascades activated by key mVOCs such as 2,3-butanediol, acetoin, dimethyl disulfide, and geosmin, highlighting their convergence on jasmonic a

Biobutanol production from rice straw using a redox-modulated fungal-bacterial consortium: Transcriptional regulation and process integration.

Producing butanol from lignocellulosic biomass is a key strategy for addressing climate change and the energy crisis. Consolidated bioprocess (CBP), which combines enzyme production, hydrolysis, and fermentation into a single step, offers an effective way to lower the production costs of biobutanol. Despite the crucial role of fungi in cellulolytic decomposition, developing efficient fungal-bacterial consortia for butanol production remains challenging due to the fundamental conflict between the aerobic nature of fungi and the strict anaerobicity of solventogenic clostridia. In this study, a m

The Impact of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis on Intestinal Microbial Community Composition and Diversity in Small-Tail Han Sheep.

Paratuberculosis (PTB), primarily caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is a chronic infection that affects ruminants and is difficult to prevent, diagnose, and treat. Investigating how MAP infections affect the gut microbiota in sheep can aid in the prevention and treatment of ovine PTB. This study examined fecal samples from eight small-tail Han sheep (STHS) at various stages of infection and from three different field areas. All samples underwent DNA extraction and 16S rRNA sequencing. Among all samples, the phyla p. Firmicutes and p. Bacteroidota exhibited the highes

Salt-free fermented fish of Northeast India: Microbial ecology, biochemical dynamics and comparative perspectives.

Salt-free fish fermentation systems, which likely evolved under conditions of high humidity and limited salt availability, are indigenous to Northeast India. Fermented fish products such as Ngari, Hentak, Shidal, and Napham exemplify this unique preservation strategy. Unlike conventional salt-based fermentation (15-30% NaCl), these systems rely on moisture reduction (10-30%), oxygen limitation, and spontaneous microbial succession rather than osmotic selection. Microbial consortia dominated by lactic acid bacteria, Bacillus, Micrococcus, and Staphylococcus, drive proteolysis and lipolysis, res

Biodegradation of vulcanized waste tire rubber by Gordonia polyisoprenivorans Kd2: mechanistic insights and ecological context from indigenous rubber-degrading communities.

Waste tires pose a persistent environmental challenge and resist natural degradation due to vulcanization-induced sulfur crosslinks and the presence of toxic additives, severely limiting microbial accessibility. Gordonia polyisoprenivorans Kd2 was selected as a model organism to study biodegradation potential against ground tire rubber (GTR) of two size fractions (400-600 µm and 3-4 mm) over 28 days in mineral salts medium. GTR samples were comprehensively characterized using ATR-FTIR, FESEM-EDS, CHNS analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and solvent swelling-based analysis. In addition,

Microbial community restoration in abandoned coal mine lands: ecological assembly, functional mechanisms, and restoration strategies.

Coal mining creates coupled physicochemical stresses, including extreme pH, nutrient depletion, metal enrichment, compaction, and loss of plant-derived carbon, that reduce microbial biomass, simplify interaction networks, and suppress biogeochemical functions. This review synthesizes recent evidence on microbial community restoration in abandoned coal mine lands, with emphasis on community assembly, stress adaptation, functional genes, and the interpretive value of high-throughput sequencing and meta-omics. During natural recovery, microbial propagule dispersal interacts with strong habitat fi

Postharvest biocontrol agents in fruits and vegetables: mechanisms, applications, challenges, and future perspectives.

Postharvest losses of horticultural produce, primarily due to microbial decay, remain a major challenge to global food security, accounting for 35-50% of production annually. To control this, overuse of synthetic fungicides has led to pathogen resistance, environmental contamination, and health concerns, prompting a shift toward sustainable biocontrol agents (BCAs). This review comprehensively examines the potential of microbial antagonists (yeasts, bacteria, and fungi), plant-based agents (essential oils and extracts), and natural compounds (e.g., chitosan, alginate, organic acids, etc.) for

Organic-inorganic composite inoculant promotes carbon stabilization in acidic lateritic red soil by redirecting microbial catabolism toward anabolism.

Acidification, nutrient deficiency, and poor carbon pool stability are key bottlenecks restricting the sustainable development of agriculture in lateritic red soils. In this study, we isolated strains GC05 (Paracoccus communis) and GC07 (Advenella kashmirensis). A composite microbial consortium was constructed and then combined with a biochar-montmorillonite-chicken manure carrier to produce an organic-inorganic composite microbial inoculant. After applying the inoculant to acidic lateritic red soil, we investigated its mechanisms in simultaneously ameliorating acidic lateritic red soil and dr

Physiological responses of floc-forming microalgae-bacteria consortia to environmental perturbations.

Fast-sedimenting microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) offer a cost-efficient pathway for biomass harvesting while remediating polluted water bodies in chemostatic photobioreactors. Understanding how abiotic parameters affect floc morphology, sinking properties and metagenomic species composition remains critical for optimization of these specific bioreactors. This study investigated whether fast-sedimenting MBC maintain structural resilience under moderate stress but lose stability beyond critical physiological tipping points. By investigating the physiological boundaries of five environmental

Actinomycetes in the spotlight: biodiversity and their role in bioremediation.

Actinomycetes represent a taxonomically and functionally diverse group of filamentous bacteria that are increasingly recognized for their role in environmental cleanup. Beyond their well-established capacity to produce antibiotics and other bioactive compounds, these microorganisms have shown remarkable potential in the degradation and transformation of a broad spectrum of pollutants, including petroleum hydrocarbons (e.g., crude oil, diesel), synthetic dyes (e.g., azo dyes), heavy metals (e.g., cadmium, lead), and pesticides (e.g., organochlorines). In recent years, significant progress has b

Thermally enhanced biodegradation mechanisms of trichloroethene and benzene co-contaminants in groundwater: Insights into microbial functional gene enrichment and biogeochemistry.

A series of thermally enhanced biodegradation (TEB) experiments at varying temperatures (15, 30 and 45 °C) were conducted to evaluate their effects on the biodegradation kinetics of trichloroethene (TCE) and benzene co-mingled contaminants using indigenous microbial consortiums. Results demonstrated that the highest TCE biodegradation rate, 0.35 μmol L⁻¹ day⁻¹ , with a half-life of 49 days, was observed at 30 °C, whereas the biodegradation of benzene was enhanced to a less extent. The functional gene analysis results revealed that increased tceA and tmoA genes contributed to enhanced TCE and b

Microbial synergies drive simultaneous biodegradation of ethoxy and alkyl chains of Nonylphenol Ethoxylate in fluidized bed reactors.

The widely-used surfactant Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPEO) produces endocrine-disrupting compounds during biodegradation, with these byproducts being more harmful than untreated NPEO. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) in reducing the production of 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) during the biodegradation of NPEO. Two identical FBR filled with sand were used to assess the NPEO degradation and to enhance the microbial consortia capable of breaking down the complex byproducts, ethanol and fumarate were introduced as co-substrates. Our findings demonstrate the significa

From mec cassette to rdhA: a key Dehalobacter genomic neighborhood in a chloroform and dichloromethane-transforming microbial consortium.

UNLABELLED: Chloroform (CF) and dichloromethane (DCM) are groundwater contaminants of concern due to their high toxicity and inhibition of important biogeochemical processes such as methanogenesis. Anaerobic biotransformation of CF and DCM has been well documented but typically independently of one another. CF is the electron acceptor for certain organohalide-respiring bacteria that use reductive dehalogenases (RDases) to dechlorinate CF to DCM. In contrast, known DCM degraders use DCM as their electron donor, which is oxidized using a series of methyltransferases and associated proteins encod

The performance of a two-layer biotrickling filter filled with new mixed packing materials for the removal of H2S from air.

In the work described here, a two-layer biotrickling filter filled with new packing materials was used to remove H2S from air. The upper layer of the filter was packed with activated carbon-loaded polyurethane, whereas the lower layer was filled with modified organism-suspended fillers. The effects of inlet load, empty bed residence time (EBRT) from 79 s to 53 s, pH and contaminant starvation time were investigated. For loads of 15-50 g/(m(3) h), the average removal efficiency (RE) was higher than 96% under a consistent supply of pollutants. The critical elimination capacity was 39.95 g/(m(3)

Composition and development of oral bacterial communities.

The oral bacterial microbiome encompasses approximately 700 commonly occurring phylotypes, approximately half of which can be present at any time in any individual. These bacteria are largely indigenous to the oral cavity; this limited habitat range suggests that interactions between the various phylotypes, and between the phylotypes and their environment, are crucial for their existence. Molecular cataloging has confirmed many basic observations on the composition of the oral microbiome that were formulated well before ribosomal RNA-based systematics, but the power and the scope of molecular
