Microvessel Density as an Adjunctive Immunohistochemical Parameter in the Differential Diagnosis of Parathyroid Carcinoma and Adenoma-An Immunohistochemical Study.

Background/Objectives: Distinguishing parathyroid carcinoma from parathyroid adenoma remains a major diagnostic challenge because these tumors frequently share similar clinical, biochemical, radiological, and histopathological features. Accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate surgical management, highlighting the need for reliable adjunctive biomarkers. This study evaluated the diagnostic value of tumor angiogenesis, quantified by microvessel density (MVD), for differentiating parathyroid carcinoma from parathyroid adenoma and its association with clinicopathological characteristics. Microvessel quantification by fully convolutional neural networks associated with type 2 inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is still unclear, and little is known about angiogenesis in this disease. We utilized a fully convolutional network (FCN), which has been extensively used in image processing to study angiogenesis in CRS. OBJECTIVE: To explore the tissue quantification of microvessels and their potential association with inflammation in CRS by using FCN to reflect the angiogenesis condition in CRS. METHODS: For endotyping of CRS, tissue homogenates of 79 patients with CRS who had undergone functional endoscopic sinus surgery and 17 control subjects

Multimodal imaging of aberrant macular microvessel crossing the foveal avascular zone in two young adults.

BACKGROUND: The traditional view is that there are no vessels in the foveal avascular zone. The two cases we report show microvessels crossing the foveal avascular zone. CASE PRESENTATION: A man and a woman, both 25 years old, were both incidentally found on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to have unilateral aberrant microvessels crossing the foveal avascular zone in their left eyes. Visual acuity was preserved in both patients. The vessel density (VD) and perfusion density (PD) of the eyes with the aberrant microvessels were all higher than those of the contralateral eyes. Ne

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Characteristics of Renal Pelvis Urothelial Carcinoma and Its Relationship with Microvessel Density.

We studied the characteristics of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in renal pelvic urothelial carcinomas and explored its performance in assessing microvessel density (MVD) of tumor tissues. We retrospectively analyzed the characteristics of 125 cases, which were confirmed pathologically to be renal pelvic urothelial carcinomas using CEUS. We performed CEUS and found that most tumors presented with an enhanced mode of "slow-in (mean = 16.7 ± 2.6 s, range: 12-25 s), hypo-enhancement and fast-out (mean = 69.3 ± 16.2 s, range: 42-113 s)." However, the wash-in pattern, homogeneity and wash-out

Clinical significance of cancer-associated fibroblasts and their correlation with microvessel and lymphatic vessel density in lung adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are associated with microvessel density (MVD) and lymphatic vessel density (LVD) in lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) or are not prognostic. METHODS: Ninety-three lung adenocarcinoma patients without adjuvant therapy between January 2010 and June 2011 were enrolled. CAFs, MVD, and LVD were identified by α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), CD34 and D2-40 staining via immunohistochemistry. Staining intensities were assessed and quantified. For statistics, Pearson's chi-square test, logistic regression, Kaplan-Meier, and log-rank tests wer

Development and Validation of a Histological Method to Measure Microvessel Density in Whole-Slide Images of Cancer Tissue.

Despite all efforts made to develop predictive biomarkers for antiangiogenic therapies, no unambiguous markers have been identified so far. This is due to among others the lack of standardized tests. This study presents an improved microvessel density quantification method in tumor tissue based on stereological principles and using whole-slide images. Vessels in tissue sections of different cancer types were stained for CD31 by an automated and validated immunohistochemical staining method. The stained slides were digitized with a digital slide scanner. Systematic, uniform, random sampling of

Expression of claudin-1 and its relationship with lymphatic microvessel generation in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

We investigated the relationship between claudin-1 and micro-lymphatic vessel density (MLVD) by detecting claudin-1 and protein D2-40 expression in cancer tissue specimens obtained from 97 patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC). We also explored the correlation between the expression of these proteins and clinical tumor stage, pathological grading, and clinical prognosis in the patients. Moreover, we studied the mechanism of lymph node metastasis in HSCC, thereby providing information for treating HSCC and inhibiting lymph node metastasis. We detected levels of claudin-1 a

Angiogenic potential of microvessel fragments is independent of the tissue of origin and can be influenced by the cellular composition of the implants.

UNLABELLED: We have demonstrated that MFs isolated from adipose retain angiogenic potential in vitro and form a mature, perfused network when implanted. However, adipose-derived microvessels are rich in provascularizing cells that could uniquely drive neovascularization in adipose-derived MFs implants. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the ability of MFs from a different vascular bed to recapitulate adipose-derived microvessel angiogenesis and network formation and analyze adipose-derived vessel plasticity by assessing whether vessel function could be modulated by astrocyte-like cells. METHODS: MFs wer

A comparative study of the spatial distribution of mast cells and microvessels in the foetal, adult human thymus and thymoma.

Mast cells (MCs) are widely distributed in human and animal tissues and have been shown to play an important role in angiogenesis in normal and pathological conditions. Few data are available about the relationship between MCs and blood vessels in the normal human thymus, and there are virtually no data about their distribution and significance in thymoma. The aim of this study was to analyse the spatial distribution of MCs and microvessels in the normal foetal and adult thymus and thymoma. Twenty biopsy specimens of human thymus, including foetal and adult normal thymus and thymoma were analy

Microvessel length density, total length, and length per neuron in five subcortical regions in schizophrenia.

Recent studies (Prabakaran et al. in Mol Psychiat 9:684-697, 2004; Hanson and Gottesman in BMC Med Genet 6:7, 2005; Harris et al. in PLoS ONE 3:e3964, 2008) have suggested that microvascular abnormalities occur in the brains of patients with schizophrenia. To assess the integrity of the microvasculature in subcortical brain regions in schizophrenia, we investigated the microvessel length density, total microvessel length, and microvessel length per neuron using design-based stereologic methods in the caudate nucleus, putamen, nucleus accumbens, mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus, and lateral

Classification of nasopharyngeal microvessels detected by narrow band imaging endoscopy and its role in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

CONCLUSIONS: The new NBI classification of nasopharyngeal mucosal microvessels was helpful in differential diagnosis for benign and malignant lesions of the nasopharyngeal region. NBI endoscopy facilitates the detection of superficial nasopharyngeal lesions and might enable early diagnoses of NPC. OBJECTIVES: To propose a new microvessel diagnostic classification using narrow band imaging (NBI) endoscopy and to investigate the role of an NBI classification in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2010, a total of 290 patients with a suspe

[Ultrastructure of coronary microvessels in conditions of heart reperfusion following prolonged ischemia while applying various methods of artificial hypothermia].

It has been found out that in children with Roger's disease corrected in the conditions of two fundamentally different procedures of anesthetic management, myocardial reperfusion after cardiac arrest under artificial hypothermic circulation is accompanied by obstruction of more than 30% of coronary bed microvessels with hydropic endothelial cells or their cystiform fragments. The content of necrotic cells increases, while the "working" cells demonstrate a decrease in myocropinocytotic transport characteristics. Circulatory arrest under perfusionless hypothermia and immersion reperfusion do not

Differences in coagulant and fibrinolytic activities of cultured human endothelial cells derived from omental tissue microvessels and umbilical veins.

Large vessel and microvascular endothelial cells were compared in their capacity to synthesize and secrete coagulant and fibrinolytic factors. Human omental tissue microvascular endothelial cells (HOTMEC) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were isolated, grown to confluency under identical conditions, and studied in primary cultures. After an incubation period of 12 hours in serum-free medium, the conditioned medium of confluent HOTMEC contained 100-fold higher levels of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) antigen than that of HUVEC. The conditioned media as well as the lysates
