The novel treatment of children with viral warts using microwave technology.

Microwave therapy is emerging as an effective, well-tolerated and safe treatment modality for cutaneous warts but there is limited data in paediatric patients. In our cohort of 35 paediatric patients with recalcitrant warts, 68.6% (24/35) demonstrated complete resolution after an average of three microwave treatment sessions. There were no reports of ulceration or blistering but 22.9% (8/35) of patients reported pain that required discontinuation of microwave therapy. This study provides evidence that microwave therapy can be used for the treatment of warts in paediatric patients.

Transdermal insulin delivery with microwave and fatty acids as permeation enhancers.

Inhaled/oral insulin have been investigated as an alternative to injectable insulin, but are met with unsatisfactory outcomes. Transdermal administration bears several advantages unmet by inhalation/oral delivery, but macromolecular drugs permeation is poor. This study explored microwave to elicit transdermal insulin permeation, and compared against conventional permeation enhancers (fatty acids) in vitro/in vivo. The transdermal insulin permeation was promoted by microwave (2450 MHz/1 mW) > oleic acid (monounsaturated) ~ linoleic acid (double unsaturated bonds). The linolenic acid (triple uns

Percutaneous microwave ablation for control of massive portal venous bleeding.

We present a case of a 46 years old female with decompensated liver cirrhosis who developed severe intraperitoneal hemorrhage secondary to inadvertent liver puncture during a paracentesis which resulted in a combined hepatic arterial and portal venous injury. The arterial injury was managed with transarterial embolization. The portal venous injury was managed with percutaneous microwave ablation. This article also highlights the importance of evaluating both arterial injury as well as portal venous injury in the setting of hepatic bleeding, particularly in patients with portal hypertension.

Development of an Anthropomorphic Phantom of the Axillary Region for Microwave Imaging Assessment.

We produced an anatomically and dielectrically realistic phantom of the axillary region to enable the experimental assessment of Axillary Lymph Node (ALN) imaging using microwave imaging technology. We segmented a thoracic Computed Tomography (CT) scan and created a computer-aided designed file containing the anatomical configuration of the axillary region. The phantom comprises five 3D-printed parts representing the main tissues of interest of the axillary region for the purpose of microwave imaging: fat, muscle, bone, ALNs, and lung. The phantom allows the experimental assessment of multiple

MICROWAVE DIATHERMY IN PHYSIOTHERAPY: INTRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF A QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE.

Microwave diathermies (MWDs) are electromagnetic (EM) radiation emitting systems that are used by physiotherapists for thermotherapy treatment. Although this form of therapy is widely available in most physiotherapy units worldwide, management of the equipment is not obligatory addressed either by clinical engineers or medical physicists. A novel quality control (QC) protocol for MWD equipment, examining mechanical, electrical and electronic condition, the power output and EM radiation distribution in the electrotherapy room, was used during a national QC survey. The results of the survey reve
