Effect of continued feeding of cows' milk on asymptomatic infants with milk protein sensitive enteropathy.

The clinical response and the histological changes in the mucosa of the small bowel in response to continued feeding with cows' milk protein were assessed over a period of 2-6 weeks in 24 infants who had shown histological changes without immediate clinical symptoms after challenge with a diet containing cows' milk protein. Twenty of the 24 infants (83%) thrived well on cows' milk protein. Jejunal biopsy specimens taken six to eight weeks after the initial biopsy showed histological improvement in all 20 infants compared with biopsy specimens taken soon after the challenge, which had shown muc

[Initiation of a cure for kwashiorkor patients using a whey milk product. A comparison with cows milk].

Whey milk, a side-product of cheese production, is not utilized for human nutrition. Whey protein is of good nutritional quality with a high biological value, exceeding that of whole-milk protein. A whey milk product consisting of liquid whey milk 60%, whole cow's milk 40% and skimmed milk powder 0.5% was mixed, spray-dried and prepared in instant form. After reconstitution with water, it was compared with sterilized whole cow's milk for the initiation of cure in 30 acute kwashiorkor patients randomly allocated to the two feeds. The diets were given for 3 weeks. There were no statistically sig

Early Expressed Milk Volume and Coming to Volume for Mother's Own Milk in Hospitalized Infants.

BACKGROUND: Early pumping frequency is strongly correlated with achieving coming to volume (CTV) and having increased milk volume production. A model was created to predict CTV using early pumping frequency, achievement of early morning pumping, and birth weight. RESEARCH AIM: To assess if cumulative pumping volumes during the first 5 postnatal days (CV x 5) influence coming to volume (CTV: producing > 500 milliliters breast milk per day by postnatal Day 14) for mothers of hospitalized infants, with a secondary aim to develop and compare a new predictive model using CV x 5 with our previous m

Consumption of Unpasteurized (Raw) Milk and Milk Products by Pregnant People and Children: Policy Statement.

Sales of unpasteurized (raw) milk and milk products remain legal in at least 27 US states. Unpasteurized milk and milk products from cows, goats, and sheep continue to be a source of infections attributable to several virulent pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella species, Brucella species, and Escherichia coli O157. These infections can occur in both healthy and immunocompromised individuals, including older adults, infants, young children, and pregnant people and their fetuses, potentially resulting in life-threatening illness and fetal miscarriage. Quantitative lipidomic analysis of blood and milk in jennies with high and low milk fat content.

Jenny milk is characterized by low fat content and individual variability. To test the association between blood and milk lipid profiles between jennies with high-fat (HF) and low-fat (LF) content in milk, we compared blood and milk lipid compositions between HF and LF jennies on the same feeding and management regimes. Milk fat yield and milk fat content were greater in the HF than LF group, but milk yield, lactose and protein contents, density, pH, and somatic cell count did not differ between groups. Milk fat content was correlated negatively with density and positively with pH and SCC. In

Milk BHB Heritability Estimates and Genetic Correlations with Milk Yield in Grazing Dairies in Chile.

This study aimed to estimate the heritability of BHB in milk and evaluate its genetic correlations with other traits in grazing dairy herds from southern Chile. The analysis was based on a comprehensive dataset provided by a DHIA cooperative (Cooprinsem, Osorno, Chile). The dataset included records from 617 grazing farms and 712,629 lactations spanning from 2019 to 2024. The final dataset included 254,979 lactations from 50,794 cows. Milk BHB concentrations were higher in early lactation and remained relatively low and stable thereafter. Heritability estimates for BHB followed a parabolic tren

Milk functional characteristics of cows at extended lactation and effects on bulk tank milk traits.

We evaluated the effect of including 0, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 100% of individual milk from cows at extended lactation (more than 315 d in milk) on milk ethanol stability (MES), pH, acidity and ionic calcium (iCa) of the bulk tank milk. The study was carried out on commercial dairy farms in Brazil using milk samples of individual cows, bulk tank and their mixtures. Samples of individual cows were classified as low (≤74%), intermediate (76-78%) and high (≥80%) stability classes based on MES. Data were submitted to Anova, multiple linear regression analysis and logistic regression. Low, intermedia

Biomarkers of Tolerance to Baked Milk in Cow's Milk-Allergic Children at High Risk of Anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Consuming baked milk (BM) may accelerate tolerance in cow's milk-allergic (CMA) children. In high-risk patients, controlled BM-based oral food challenge (BM-OFC) is recommended, as the benefits can outweigh the risks of a prolonged exclusion diet. Objectives: To identify predictive biomarkers for BM-OFC outcomes in a cohort at high risk of anaphylaxis and compare the OFC thresholds for baked and pasteurized cow´s milk protein (CMP). METHODS: We performed a prospective study of children (≥12 months to <6 years) with a history of CMA. Testing at diagnosis involved pri

Human cytomegalovirus in breast milk is associated with milk composition and the infant gut microbiome and growth.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a highly prevalent herpesvirus that is often transmitted to the neonate via breast milk. Postnatal CMV transmission can have negative health consequences for preterm and immunocompromised infants, but any effects on healthy term infants are thought to be benign. Furthermore, the impact of CMV on the composition of the hundreds of bioactive factors in human milk has not been tested. Here, we utilize a cohort of exclusively breastfeeding full-term mother-infant pairs to test for differences in the milk transcriptome and metabolome associated with CMV, and the impac

Anaphylaxis to goat/sheep's milk in a 4-year-old boy tolerant to cow's milk.

Immune-mediated reactions to dairy products may vary depending on the mammalian source. We present a case of anaphylaxis to goat/sheep's milk with tolerance to cow's milk. A 4-year-old boy of Eastern European descent presented with gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms within minutes after eating a goat/sheep's milk-derived food product. The tryptase level measured 1 hour post initial symptoms and 1 month after the allergic reaction were 14.6 µg/L and 5.1 µg/L, respectively (norm: 0.0-13.5 µg/L), confirming the diagnosis of anaphylaxis. A skin prick test performed 1 month after the reactio

Disorder in milk proteins: adipophilin and TIP47, important constituents of the milk fat globule membrane.

Milk fat globules (MFGs), which are secreted by the epithelial cells of the lactating mammary glands, account for the most of the nutritional value of milk. They are enveloped by the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), a complex structure consisting of three phospholipid membrane monolayers and containing various lipids. Depending on the origin of milk, specific proteins accounts for 5-70% of the MFGM mass. Proteome of MFGMs includes hundreds of proteins, with nine major components being adipophilin, butyrophilin, cluster of differentiation 36, fatty acid binding protein, lactadherin, mucin 1, m

Rapid and label-free detection of Brucella melitensis in milk and milk products using an aptasensor.

In this work, a novel quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) aptasensor is designed for the diagnosis of Brucella melitensis bacteria, which affects the Mediterranean fever (brucellosis) from the zoonotic diseases that are very common in the Middle East Countries. The method is based on the selection of B. melitensis bacterium from solutions using B. melitensis specific binding aptamer (Apt) attached magnetic nanoparticles. The surface of the magnetic nanoparticles (i.e.,Fe3O4) was modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and then grafted with a hydrophilic macromonomer poly(ethyleneglycol)

Cow-level associations of lameness, behavior, and milk yield of cows milked in automated systems.

This study evaluated differences in behavior and productivity between lame and nonlame cows in herds with automated milking systems (AMS). We monitored 30 cows per herd on 41 farms with AMS in Canada (26 herds in Ontario and 15 herds in Alberta). During a 6-d period, milking data (n = 1,184) and lying behavior data (n = 1,209) were collected from cows on 41 farms. Rumination behavior (n = 569) and activity (n = 615) data were available for cows at 22 farms. Locomotion was scored using a numerical rating system (NRS; 1 = sound; 5 = extremely lame). Cows were defined as clinically lame with NRS

Problems associated with the microbiological control of the breast milk from hospital milk bank units.

The microbiological tests on breast milk performed when samples of pasteurized breast milk are added to hospital milk banks are covered by French regulations dating from December 3rd 2007. They involve counts of the aerobic total flora and of Staphylococcus aureus in a sample of milk before pasteurization, and culture after pasteurization to check that the treated milk is sterile. The regulations specify the nature of the agar plates to be used, together with the conditions for plating and incubation, but they lack detail in other areas. We developed a quality assurance system, modified our pr

Milk causes a rapid urticarial reaction on the skin of children with atopic dermatitis and milk allergy.

Open skin challenge test with whole milk and its large and small molecular fractions was performed on intact skin of children with atopic dermatitis and suspicion of milk allergy. Of the 51 children challenged with milk 35 reacted within minutes with contact urticaria. The large molecular (m.w. greater than 10,000 d) fraction gave an urticarial reaction as often as whole milk, whereas the small molecular fraction gave only a few positive reactions. These were obviously caused by alpha-lactalbumin which was present only in small amounts in the small molecular fraction. These findings indicate t

Retention and distribution of iron added to cow's milk and human milk as various salts and chelates.

Iron supplementation of infant formulas is recommended by most national and international organizations, but the optimal form of supplementation has not been determined. We have compared the bioavailability and tissue distribution of iron from four iron chelates and two commonly used iron salts. Weanling C57BL/6J mice were fed for 1 week an evaporated cow's milk diet supplemented with vitamins and minerals (except for iron). Following the adjustment period, mice were divided into 12 groups of 20 each. Six groups continued to receive the cow's milk diet for 18 hours, while the other six groups
