Four Novel SARS-CoV-2 Infected Feral American Mink (Neovison Vison) Among 60 Individuals Caught in the Wild.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the zoonotic virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, has caused global health and economic disruption. American mink (Neovison vison) are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 and capable of transmitting it to both mink and humans. We previously reported the first detection of SARS-CoV-2 in feral mink, with two positive cases among 13 animals in the upper courses of two rivers in the Valencian Community, eastern Spain. Here, we expand that study with 60 additional feral mink sampled from November 2020 to May 2022. Four new positives

Clinical Potential of Misshapen/NIKs-Related Kinase (MINK) 1-A Many-Sided Element of Cell Physiology and Pathology.

Misshapen/NIKs-related kinase (MINK) 1 belongs to the mammalian germinal center kinase (GCK) family. It contains the N-terminal, conserved kinase domain, a coiled-coil region, a proline-rich region, and a GCK, C-terminal domain with the Citron-NIK-Homology (CNH) domain. The kinase is an essential component of cellular signaling pathways, which include Wnt signaling, JNK signaling, pathways engaging Ras proteins, the Hippo pathway, and STRIPAK complexes. It thus contributes to regulating the cell cycle, apoptosis, cytoskeleton organization, cell migration, embryogenesis, or tissue homeostasis.

Outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 in naturally infected mink farms: Impact, transmission dynamics, genetic patterns, and environmental contamination.

SARS-CoV-2 infection outbreaks in minks have serious implications associated with animal health and welfare, and public health. In two naturally infected mink farms (A and B) located in Greece, we investigated the outbreaks and assessed parameters associated with virus transmission, immunity, pathology, and environmental contamination. Symptoms ranged from anorexia and mild depression to respiratory signs of varying intensity. Although the farms were at different breeding stages, mortality was similarly high (8.4% and 10.0%). The viral strains belonged to lineages B.1.1.218 and B.1.1.305, poss

[Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe, who is responsible for the antibody-dependent enhancement of Aleutian mink disease parvovirus infection?].

Aleutian mink disease parvovirus (AMDV) causes a persistent infection associated with immune complex disease, hypergammaglobulinemia, and high levels of antiviral antibodies. Despite the presence of an antibody, the virus is not cleared in vivo. Pre-existing antibodies may enhance viral infections, by Fc-receptor-mediated antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), but the mechanism that underlies ADE has not been fully defined. Three models have been proposed, including: (1) interactions between antibody and FcR, complement C3 fragment and CR, or between C1q and C1qR, which promotes viral attachmen

Mercury and other heavy metals in free-ranging mink of the lower Great Lakes basin, Canada, 1998-2006.

Mercury concentrations were examined in livers of free-ranging mink (Neovison vison) trapped in the lower Great Lakes basin from 1998 to 2006. Significant geographic variation in total mercury levels was found in mink from 13 Great Lakes locations, many of which are within Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). Total mercury levels in mink from these locations were generally low to moderate, with means (±SE) ranging from 0.99 (±0.36) μg/g dry weight in mink from inland Lake Erie to 7.31 (±1.52) μg/g in mink from Walpole Island in the St. Clair River AOC. Overall, mercury exposure was highest in

Clonal nature of mink cell focus-inducing virus-induced AKR leukemia: studies with X-chromosome inactivation cellular mosaicism.

The number of cells from which murine thymic leukemias (thymomas) develop after neonatal injection with a mink cell focus-inducing recombinant virus was studied in AKR mice heterozygous at the X-linked phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) locus. Because only one of the two X-chromosomes is active in XX somatic cells, thymic leukemias that are clonal should display either type A or type B PGK but not both, whereas those with a multicellular origin may exhibit both enzymes. In 23 of 25 animals studied, thymomas expressed exclusively (11 animals) or predominantly (12 animals) a single enzyme in contrast

First report of treatment and short-term follow-up of a European mink (Mustela lutreola) with leishmaniosis in Spain.

Leishmania infantum causes disease endemic in the Mediterranean Basin that affects humans and various mammals, including mustelids. Clinical leishmaniosis has been documented in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) and in a captive Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). The European mink (Mustela lutreola), one of the world's most endangered mammals, is experiencing severe population declines linked to habitat degradation, climate change, the introduction of non-native species, and diseases. This report presents the first documented case of clinical leishmaniosis in a captive European mink, detaili

Cell adhesion function was altered during the seasonal regression of the seminiferous epithelium in the mink species Neovison vison.

Minks are seasonal breeders whose seminiferous epithelium undergoes regression through massive germ cell death, leaving only Sertoli cells and spermatogonial cells in the tubules. However, the molecular mechanisms that control this biological process remain largely unknown. This study describes a transcriptomic analysis of mink testes at various reproductive stages (active, regressing, and inactive). A comparison of seminiferous epithelium at different stages of reproduction shows that cell adhesion is altered during regression. In addition, genes and proteins involved in forming the blood-tes

Molecular detection and genetic characterizations of Cryptosporidium spp. in farmed foxes, minks, and raccoon dogs in northeastern China.

Cryptosporidium spp. are common intestinal protozoa causing diarrhea in humans and a variety of animal species. With the recent development of fur industry, a large number of fur animals are farmed worldwide, especially in China. The existence of identical Cryptosporidium species/genotypes in humans and fur animals suggests zoonotic potential. In order to assess the presence of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and/or genotypes in farmed fur animals, 367 fecal specimens were collected from 213 foxes, 114 minks and 40 raccoon dogs farmed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces, northeaste

Potassium channel subunits encoded by the KCNE gene family: physiology and pathophysiology of the MinK-related peptides (MiRPs).

Voltage-gated potassium channels provide tightly Controlled, ion-specific pathways across membranes and are key to the normal function of nerves muscles. They arise from the assembly of four pore-forming proteins called alpha-subunits. To attain the properties of native currents, alpha-subunits interact with additional molecules such as the mink-related peptides (MiRPs), single-transmembrane subunits encoded by the KCNE genes. Significantly, mutations in KCNE 1, 2 and 3 have been linked either to life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia or a disorder of skeletal muscle, familial periodic paralysis.

Effectiveness of immunization with multicomponent vaccines in protection against hemorrhagic pneumonia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in mink.

The effectiveness of immunizing mink with a new multicomponent vaccine consisting of the common protective antigen (OEP) and toxoids of protease and elastase on experimental as well as epidemic hemorrhagic pneumonia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated. This vaccine was compared with a single-component vaccine, consisting of OEP alone, for determination of its effectiveness in immunizing mink. The multicomponent vaccine was significantly more effective than the single-component vaccine. One vaccination with 100 micrograms each of OEP and toxoids of protease and elastase prevented an

Anthropozoonotic spillovers reveal sustained long-term cryptic circulation of SARS-CoV-2 within and between Lithuanian mink farms.

Several studies have documented reverse zoonotic transmission of SARS-CoV-2, including in farmed mink which are susceptible to human respiratory viruses and are known for serving as a reservoir capable of generating new virus variants in densely populated farms. Here, we present the genomic investigation launched in response to detection of human infections with mink-origin SARS-CoV-2 lineages, and show evidence of at least 14 high-confidence introductions of SARS-CoV-2 from humans into farmed mink in Lithuania where sustained transmission in farmed mink lasted up to a year. We estimated the m

Draft genome sequence analysis of a mcr-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ST661 isolated from a mink in China.

OBJECTIVES: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a major opportunistic pathogen that is a member of the Enterobacteriaceae. Klebsiella pneumoniae causes pneumonia in mink and has become the primary infectious disease that limits mink farming. In this study, we report the draft genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant (MDR) strain of K. pneumoniae that harbours the mcr-1 gene isolated from a mink in China. METHODS: The agar microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of the strain. The entire genomic DNA was sequenced using an Illumina MiSeq platform. Digestive tract nematode infections in non-native invasive American mink with the first molecular identification of Molineus patens.

Parasites may negatively affect hosts condition, especially when infection intensity is high. Species introduced to a new habitat are often less exposed to a parasite pressure but may accumulate parasites in time. American mink (Neovison vison) introduced to Europe, Asia, and South America is an example of such invasive species. We analysed nematode prevalence and digestive tract infection intensity in 796 feral American mink from Poland. The analyses were performed separately for stomach, duodenum, small intestine and large intestine. Parasite species identification was performed using molecu

Familial disease history and fur color type are associated with urinary tract disease in farmed mink (Neovison vison).

Mink urinary tract disease (MUTD) and mink fatty liver disease (MFLD) constitute two important disease entities in the mink production associated with sudden mortality and economic loss. Genetic factors or heritability of the diseases have not previously been investigated. Since mortality associated with MUTD and MFLD mainly occurs in the young immature mink, a potential genetic predisposition would rarely be passed on by the mink itself but potentially by relatives. This study aimed to investigate familial aggregation of MUTD and MFLD based on data from four generations of mink on a research

Morphological and molecular characterization of Cystoisospora laidlawi oocysts (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) in farmed American mink (Neovison vison) in Denmark.

From a longitudinal survey conducted on 30 Danish mink farms in 2016, 11.0% of faecal samples (456/4140) were positive for Cystoisospora laidlawi oocysts by microscopy, with 60% (189/315) of mink being positive at least once during the study period. Morphological analysis of sporulated oocysts identified Cystoisospora oocysts measuring 34.3 × 29.5 μm with an oocyst length/width (L/W) ratio of 1.2. The morphological features of the oocysts were identical to Isospora laidlawi previously morphological identified in farmed mink from Denmark and elsewhere. Low concentration of serum immunoglobulin G is associated with pre-weaning diarrhea in young mink kits (Neovison vison).

BACKGROUND: Pre-weaning diarrhea (PWD) is a severe syndrome, with world-wide occurrence, affecting farmed mink (Neovison vison) kits during the lactation period. Kits affected by PWD often display clinical signs such as: yellow-white diarrhea, greasy skin, and dehydration. In severe cases the kits eventually die. It is common practice to treat PWD using antimicrobials; however the effect is not well documented. Due to the multifactorial etiology of PWD vaccine development is not feasible. The role played by the immune status of the mink kits with respect to their susceptibility to PWD is not w

Abnormal retino-geniculate and geniculo-cortical pathways in several genetically distinct color phases of the mink (Mustela vison).

Several genetically distinct color phases of mink, which all show an abnormal reduction of pigment in the retinal pigment epithelium and which also show abnormalities of the retinofugal pathways, have been studied. Autoradiographic methods have been used to demonstrate the retino-geniculate pathways, and retrograde degeneration or the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase has been used for the geniculo-cortical pathways. The retino-geniculate abnormality is mild in some of the color phases and extremely severe in others, but within any one color phase the variability is relatively low
