Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) and takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) are cardiac conditions that can occur in the peripartum period. They have distinct characteristics and incidence rates; although rare, both contribute to the second leading cause of all-cause maternal mortality in the state of Missouri. PPCM can lead to heart failure, and TCM can cause acute arrhythmias leading to sudden cardiac death in otherwise healthy individuals. Children are particularly vulnerable to many classes of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected in indoor environments. The incidence of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) had been declining in the United States for decades, and by the late 1970s ARF had become a rare disease in most areas of the country. The mid-1980s saw a resurgence of ARF, with reported outbreaks in Utah, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and military recruit camps in Missouri and California, as well as sporadic cases in many other communities. This review summarizes salient epidemiologic data related to the resurgence, explores some possible explanations for its occurrence, and discusses strategies for prevention of rheumatic fever now and in the future.

The goal of the current study was to examine whether the magnitude of the association between childhood physical abuse (CPA) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) varies by type of CPA assessment and race of the respondents. Data are from the Missouri adolescent female twins study and the Missouri family study (N = 4508) where 21.2% identified as African American (AA) and 78.8% as European American (EA); mean age = 23.8. Data were collected using a structured comprehensive interview which assessed CPA experiences using behavioral questions about specific abusive behaviors and trauma checklist items.

The prevalence of Sarcocystis in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (O. hemionus) in South Dakota was determined through microscopic examination of tongue samples. The results of radiotherapy in carcinoma of the cervix stages I and II at the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC) in the period between 1975 and 1980 were analyzed. The failure rate was 13/58 (22.4%). While the failure was 8% (3/36) in ectocervical cancer it was 45% (10/22) in endocervical cancer. Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) is an immune mediated disorder characterized by low platelet counts from peripheral destruction.
