How well does structural equation modeling reveal abnormal brain anatomical connections? An fMRI simulation study.

Many brain disorders result from alterations in the strength of anatomical connectivity between different brain regions. This study investigates whether such alterations can be revealed by examining differences in interregional effective connectivity between patient and normal subjects. We applied one prominent effective connectivity method - Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) - to simulated functional MRI (fMRI) timeseries from a neurobiologically realistic network model in which the anatomical connectivity is known and can be manipulated. These timeseries were simulated for two task conditio

Effect of laparoscopic anatomical hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma based on individualized three-dimensional reconstruction model of portal vein region.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for 90% of primary liver tumors. With the development of laparoscopic technology, laparoscopic liver resection is safer and more effective compared to traditional open surgery. However, HCC tumors are often located near major blood vessels and bile ducts, which increases the difficulty of precise resection. To address these challenges, computer-based three-dimensional (3D) liver reconstruction technology has been widely applied. This technology converts two-dimensional imaging data into detailed three-dimensional anatomical models, clearly di

Clinical recurrence patterns in hepatocellular carcinoma: greater consistency with the seed-and-soil hypothesis than with the anatomical/mechanical model of dissemination.

BACKGROUND: Recurrences of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) characterized by multiple intrahepatic nodules, macrovascular invasion, or extrahepatic metastases are generally considered non-curative and critically determine postoperative prognosis. Although such recurrences are commonly regarded as metastatic events, whether their dissemination primarily follows vascular anatomy or reflects biological compatibility between tumor cells and organ microenvironments remains unclear. We therefore evaluated whether these recurrence patterns are consistent with predictions derived from the anatomical/mec

T2ID-CAS: Diffusion Model and Class Aware Sampling to Mitigate Class Imbalance in Neck Ultrasound Anatomical Landmark Detection.

Neck ultrasound (US) plays a vital role in airway management by providing non-invasive, real-time imaging that enables rapid and precise interventions. Deep learning-based anatomical landmark detection in neck US can further facilitate procedural efficiency. However, class imbalance within datasets, where key structures like tracheal rings and vocal folds are underrepresented, presents significant challenges for object detection models. To address this, we propose T2ID-CAS, a hybrid approach that combines a text-to-image latent diffusion model with class-aware sampling to generate high-quality

Regional Strain Response of an Anatomically Accurate Human Finite Element Head Model Under Frontal Versus Lateral Loading.

INTRODUCTION: Because brain regions are responsible for specific functions, regional damage may cause specific, predictable symptoms. However, the existing brain injury criteria focus on whole brain response. This study developed and validated a detailed human brain computational model with sufficient fidelity to include regional components and demonstrate its feasibility to obtain region-specific brain strains under selected loading. METHODS: Model development used the Simulated Injury Monitor (SIMon) model as a baseline. Each SIMon solid element was split into 8, with each shell element spl

Angle bisector method to determine the accurate angle for tibiofibular syndesmotic fixation: A validation study with 3D-printed anatomical models.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to validate the angle bisector method on 3D-printed ankle models to reveal whether it aids in placing syndesmotic screws at an accurate trajectory that is patient- and level-specific and also not surgeon-dependent. METHODS: DICOM data of 16 ankles were used to create 3D anatomical models. Then the models were printed in their original size and two trauma surgeons performed the syndesmotic fixations with the angle bisector method at 2 cm and 3.5 cm proximal to joint space. Afterward, the models were sectioned to reveal the trajectory of the screws. The photos of the a

Impact of extra-anatomical bypass on coarctation fluid dynamics using patient-specific lumped parameter and Lattice Boltzmann modeling.

Accurate hemodynamic analysis is not only crucial for successful diagnosis of coarctation of the aorta (COA), but intervention decisions also rely on the hemodynamics assessment in both pre and post intervention states to minimize patient risks. Despite ongoing advances in surgical techniques for COA treatments, the impacts of extra-anatomic bypass grafting, a surgical technique to treat COA, on the aorta are not always benign. Our objective was to investigate the impact of bypass grafting on aortic hemodynamics. We investigated the impact of bypass grafting on aortic hemodynamics using a pati

Modeling grey matter atrophy as a function of time, aging or cognitive decline show different anatomical patterns in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Grey matter (GM) atrophy in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is most commonly modeled as a function of time. However, this approach does not take into account inter-individual differences in initial disease severity or changes due to aging. Here, we modeled GM atrophy within individuals across the AD clinical spectrum as a function of time, aging and MMSE, as a proxy for disease severity, and investigated how these models influence estimates of GM atrophy. METHODS: We selected 523 individuals from ADNI (100 preclinical AD, 288 prodromal AD, 135 AD dementia) with abnormal baseline amyloid

Anatomical Characterization and Three-Dimensional Modeling of the Muscles at the Corner of the Mouth: An Iodine Staining Technique Based on Micro-Computed Tomography.

The anatomy of the modiolus and surrounding muscles is complicated and contributes to the morphology of the mouth corner. The authors used iodine staining and micro-computed tomography to observe the anatomy of the modiolus and surrounding muscles. Based on the micro-computed tomographic images and the three-dimensional model construction, the authors found that the muscle fibers in the modiolus were oriented continuously in the running direction of the muscle itself and that there were no chaotic clumps in the region of muscle fiber convergence. The pars marginalis of the orbicularis oris mus

Electric field estimation of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation clinically used for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders in anatomical head models.

Literature studies showed the ability to treat neuropsychiatric disorders using H1 coil, developed for the deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS). Despite the positive results of the clinical studies, the electric field (E) distributions inside the brain induced by this coil when it is positioned on the scalp according to the clinical studies themselves are not yet precisely estimated. This study aims to characterize the E distributions due to the H1 coil in the brain of two realistic human models by computational electromagnetic techniques and to compare them with the ones due to the f

Immune Responses in the Central Nervous System Are Anatomically Segregated in a Non-Human Primate Model of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) accesses the central nervous system (CNS) early during infection, leading to HIV-associated cognitive impairment and establishment of a viral reservoir. Here, we describe a dichotomy in inflammatory responses in different CNS regions in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected macaques, a model for HIV infection. We found increased expression of inflammatory genes and perivascular leukocyte infiltration in the midbrain of SIV-infected macaques. Conversely, the frontal lobe showed downregulation of inflammatory genes associated with interferon-γ and in

Numerical simulation of pharyngeal airflow applied to obstructive sleep apnea: effect of the nasal cavity in anatomically accurate airway models.

Repetitive brief episodes of soft-tissue collapse within the upper airway during sleep characterize obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), an extremely common and disabling disorder. Failure to maintain the patency of the upper airway is caused by the combination of sleep-related loss of compensatory dilator muscle activity and aerodynamic forces promoting closure. The prediction of soft-tissue movement in patient-specific airway 3D mechanical models is emerging as a useful contribution to clinical understanding and decision making. Such modeling requires reliable estimations of the pharyngeal wall pr

Effect of primary site on prognosis in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma. A study using a new model to analyse anatomical locations.

The prognostic impact of different anatomical sites in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) has been widely debated and requires further elucidation. Therefore, we developed EssDoll, a new computerized method to address the question of site in relation to prognosis. A population-based cohort of 1891 patients, diagnosed between 1976 and 1987 with invasive CMM without evidence of metastasis, was identified. The body surface was divided into 24 areas. Hazard ratios (HRs) for CMM death were calculated and areas were compared in both the whole model and in pairs. Cox's proportional haza

Polyethylene Stresses in Lumbar Total Joint Replacement Under Elevated Loading: Insights from an Anatomic Finite Element Model.

The goal of this study was to assess elevated spinal loading conditions and their effect on the polyethylene stresses of a lumbar total joint replacement (L-TJR). A previously validated lumbar spine finite element model was virtually implanted with an L-TJR at L4-L5 and exposed to three elevated loading conditions: (1) 95th-percentile male body weight while bending forward, (2) combined ±7.5 Nm axial torsion and lateral bending, and (3) ASTM F2423 aggressive loading (1850 N plus 10-12 Nm bending). Combined torsion and lateral bending were considered because these loads and moments may be coupl
