System Evaluation of Optical Screening and Conditioning for Injury Resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Non-combat musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are the leading cause of medical disability across the military, with poor exercise form-including misalignment and mistiming-being key contributors. Rehabilitation and conditioning can build resilience and reduce risk. Our recent work resulted in a prototype Optical Screening and Conditioning for Injury Resilience (OSCIR) system offering real-time, non-contact, biofeedback through field-deployable motion capture equipped with three-dimensional (3D) camera-based technology and an augmented reality (AR) viewer for tracking exercise form

Initial Validation of Markerless Gait Analysis Using SPLYZA Motion: Waveform Agreement Under Practical Measurement Conditions.

This study aimed to conduct an initial validation of markerless gait analysis using SPLYZA Motion by evaluating waveform agreement under practical measurement conditions. Joint angle waveforms were compared with those obtained from a marker-based motion capture system. SPLYZA Motion was found to be in good waveform agreement with the reference system for trunk and proximal lower-limb kinematics. Larger errors were observed in distal joints, particularly under occlusion and higher cadence; however, these differences were phase-dependent and did not substantially affect overall waveform patterns

Mobile eye tracking in art museums: From visitor research to museum practice.

Studies using mobile eye tracking (MET) in art museums have provided valuable insights into the visitor experience. Findings suggest that this is strongly influenced by artwork features, exhibition design and visitor characteristics. To date, however, these empirical results have rarely been used to inform exhibition design. Here, we summarize recent MET research in art museums and discuss what these studies reveal about factors influencing the visitor experience. We argue that the field is characterized by an evaluation-implementation gap. Thus, the primary challenge is not the generation of

Quantifying varus thrust in knee osteoarthritis using wearable inertial sensors: A proof of concept.

BACKGROUND: Varus thrust during walking, visualized as excessive frontal plane knee motion during weight acceptance, is a modifiable risk factor for progression of knee osteoarthritis. However, visual assessment does not capture thrust severity and quantification with optical motion capture is often not feasible. Inertial sensors may provide a convenient alternative to optical motion capture. This proof-of-concept study sought to compare wearable inertial sensors to optical motion capture for the quantification of varus thrust. METHODS: Twenty-six participants with medial knee osteoarthritis

Biomechanical changes after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty: a systematic review of advanced measurement technologies.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) consistently improves pain and function; however, the biomechanical mechanisms underpinning post-operative function and joint-level adaptations remain incompletely defined. Advanced measurement tools, including motion capture, electromyography (EMG), inertial measurement units, and accelerometry, enable objective assessment of joint motion, muscle activation, and real-world arm use. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from studies using advanced biomechanical methods to evaluate post-operative kinematics, upper-limb activity, and m

Validation of Azure Kinect for Upper Limb Motion Analysis Under Optimal and Suboptimal Conditions.

Assessment of upper-limb kinematics is essential in clinical practice for diagnosis, rehabilitation monitoring, and treatment personalization. Markerless Motion Capture (MMC) systems, such as the Microsoft Azure Kinect (AK), offer a low-cost and time-efficient alternative to marker-based systems. However, while AK accuracy has been extensively studied for lower-limb movements, its performance for upper-limb analysis-especially under clinically relevant, suboptimal conditions-remains underexplored. This study aims to validate AK for upper-limb motion tracking against a gold-standard optoelectro

A Virtual Reality Dataset to Support Hand Action Observation in Rehabilitation and Motor Learning Studies.

The recovery of motor function is increasingly understood as a process influenced not only by physical training but also by perceptual and cognitive strategies. Action Observation Treatment (AOT), a neurorehabilitation approach in which patients observe goal-directed motor actions before executing them, has demonstrated clinical benefits; however, its wider implementation is hindered by a lack of standardized procedures. We present an open-access dataset of 33 upper limb gestures specifically developed to support the administration of Virtual Reality-based AOT (VR-AOT). The gestures were selec

Effects of Different Marker Set Configurations on Tennis Stroke Recognition Performance: A Three-Dimensional Kinematic Study Based on MiniRocket.

Three-dimensional motion capture provides high-fidelity kinematic trajectories, but the extent to which different marker configurations retain discriminative information for tennis stroke recognition remains unclear. This study combined 3D motion capture with MiniRocket to compare seven upper-limb and racket marker configurations using data from 40 tennis-trained participants, 13 stroke types, and 10,133 valid movement samples. The configurations were the full-information group (ALL), full-arm group (AB), forearm group (FA), forearm + racket group (FR), upper-arm group (UA), racket group (RK),

SurfaceXR: Fusing Smartwatch IMUs and Egocentric Hand Pose for Seamless Surface Interactions.

Mid-air gestures in Extended Reality (XR) often lead to fatigue, discomfort and imprecision, limiting their suitability for extended use. Surface-based interactions offer a compelling alternative, providing improved accuracy, speed, and comfort. However, current egocentric vision-based methods struggle with reliable surface inputs due to challenges in hand tracking and surface plane estimation from oblique and occluded viewing angles. To this extent, we introduce SurfaceXR, a novel sensor fusion approach that combines headset based hand tracking with micro-vibration data sampled from commodity

A Low-Cost, Accurate, and Easily-Worn E-Skin and IMU Hand Kinematic Measurement System.

Stroke and other neurological injuries impair hand function. Although rehabilitation therapists encourage reintegration of the affected hand into daily activities, there are few tools that can be worn during everyday life that provide quantitative feedback on how much or how effectively the hand is used. Wearable sensors that can accurately track hand movements and are easily applied and removed can present intuitive feedback that could motivate hand use similarly to how pedometers encourage walking. While tracking all the hand and finger joints is needed for scientific studies, under-sensoriz

The SEWAbility system: a video-based job analysis framework for understanding task-specific job demands.

This study introduces the Smart Evaluation of Work Ability (SEWAbility), an AI-powered video analysis system designed to support objective job analysis by deriving task-specific job demands from real-world sewing task videos. SEWAbility processes overhead surveillance footage from factory environments through a hierarchical analytical pipeline. Videos are first clustered into work tasks using 88-dimensional handcrafted features capturing upper-extremity motion trajectories and joint angle statistics. Each task is subdivided into work cycles and further into work elements, from which Repetitive

Assessing Spatiotemporal and Quality Alterations in Paretic Upper Limb Movements after Stroke in Routine Care: Proposal and Validation of a Protocol Using IMUs versus MoCap.

Accurate assessment of upper-limb movement alterations is a key component of post-stroke follow-up. Motion capture (MoCap) is the gold standard for assessment even in clinical conditions, but it requires a laboratory setting with a relatively complex implementation. Alternatively, inertial measurement units (IMUs) are the subject of growing interest, but their accuracy remains to be challenged. This study aims to assess the minimal detectable change (MDC) between spatiotemporal and quality variables obtained from these IMUs and MoCap, based on a specific protocol of IMU calibration and measure

A Tremor Suppression Method for the Master-Follower Surgical Robot Manipulator Based on Kalman Filter Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Master follower surgical robotic systems are widely used in invasive procedures but remain vulnerable to end effector tremor transmitted from the operator's physiological tremor, reducing precision. METHODS: Physiological tremor was characterised with a three-dimensional optical motion capture system and integrated into master follower control strategy enhanced with Kalman filter based tremor suppression algorithm. The method was validated on a custom platform using 24 predefined motion trajectories executed via a force feedback haptic master and robotic slave manipulator. RESULT

Validation of wearable inertial sensor-based gait analysis system for measurement of spatiotemporal parameters and lower extremity joint kinematics in sagittal plane.

Wearable inertial sensor-based motion analysis systems are promising alternatives to standard camera-based motion capture systems for the measurement of gait parameters and joint kinematics. These wearable sensors, unlike camera-based gold standard systems, find usefulness in outdoor natural environment along with confined indoor laboratory-based environment due to miniature size and wireless data transmission. This study reports validation of our developed (i-Sens) wearable motion analysis system against standard motion capture system. Gait analysis was performed at self-selected speed on non

Towards Markerless Motion Estimation of Human Functional Upper Extremity Movement.

Markerless motion capture of human movement is a potentially useful approach for providing movement scientists and rehabilitation specialists with a portable and low-cost method for measuring functional upper extremity movement. This is in contrast with optical and inertial motion capture systems, which often require specialized equipment and expertise to use. Existing methods for markerless motion capture have focused on inferring 2D or 3D keypoints on the body and estimating volumetric representations, both using RGB-D. The keypoints and volumes are then used to compute quantities like joint

Body-templated printing of a large-area and imperceptible organic sensing interface for skin motion recognition.

Skin motions provide rich information about our gestures, bodily status, and environmental interactions. However, large-area detection, sensing resolution, and imperceptibility have been a trilemma for current technologies to truthfully record skin motions. Here, we report a body-templated printing strategy to create a conformal sensing interface for large-area and subtle skin motion detection. Using a mild airflow to guide the deposition of an organic semiconducting ink, a sensing path is directly created to conform with skin topologies at the microscale and adapt with irregular human surface

Dosimetric impact of intrafraction patient motion on MLC-based 3D-conformal spatially fractionated radiation therapy treatment of large and bulky tumors.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the dosimetric impact on spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) plan quality due to intrafraction patient motion via multi-field MLC-based method for treating large and bulky (≥8 cm) unresectable tumors. METHODS: For large tumors, a cone beam CT-guided 3D conformal MLC-based SFRT method was utilized with 15 Gy prescription. An MLC GTV-fitting algorithm provided 1 cm diameter apertures with a 2 cm center-to-center distance at the isocenter. This generated a highly heterogeneous sieve-like dose distribution within an hour, enabling same-day SFRT treatment. Fifteen

Unpredictable Prey Motion Shapes Behavior Across Timescales.

UNLABELLED: Locating, tracking, and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigate how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. Validation of OpenCap on lower extremity kinematics during functional tasks.

Marker-based motion capture is a fundamental tool in biomechanical analysis, yet comes with major constraints such as time, cost and accessibility. This study aimed to validate the use of OpenCap, a free, markerless motion capture system compared to a marker-based motion capture system to measure lower extremity kinematics during functional tasks. 20 individuals from an athletic population (18 females, 2 males) performed two gait trials (walking, running) and three functional tasks (double leg squat, countermovement jump, jump-landing). Lower extremity peak joint kinematics were collected simu
