Injuries from motorcycle- and moped crashes in Sweden from 1987 to 1999.

The objective of this paper is to study injuries from motorcycle and moped crashes in Sweden from 1987 to 1999. Databases at the National Board for Health and Welfare and codes from both ICD9 and ICD10 systems were used, including patterns of age, gender, E-code and type of injury. Length of hospital stay, type of injuries and trends over time was evaluated. To get a more detailed picture of the age distribution, type of vehicle used and number of killed, data from the Swedish National Road Administration were also used. In Sweden, 27,122 individuals received in-patient care due to motorcycle

Head and neck injuries in fatal motorcycle collisions as determined by detailed autopsy.

Detailed layer-by-layer autopsy of the head and neck was performed on a prospective series of 73 fatally injured motorcyclists in order to identify occult injuries, particularly soft tissue neck injuries such as hemorrhage of vertebral and carotid arteries. The fatal cases were gathered as part of a larger study of 1,082 on-scene in-depth motorcycle crash investigations in Thailand. Detailed neck dissection was done on nearly all fatal cases. Injuries were coded using the 1990 revision of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS 90) and an Injury Severity Score (ISS) was determined for each case. Add

Revascularization of subtotal amputation at the ankle in children following motorcycle-spoke injury.

A prospective study of subtotal amputation of the ankle following motorcycle spoke injury was carried out to define the mechanism of the injury and results of revasculization. Between 1990 to 1995, there were 42 patients with this type of injury. They were 31 boys and 11 girls. All sustained severe skin lacerations, medial, posterior, lateral and anterior to the ankle joint. All tendons and neurovascular bundles medial, lateral and anterior to the ankle were completely torn, leaving tendons of anterior tibial, extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum communis intact. Revascularization w

The motorcyclist: easy rider or easy victim? An analysis of motorcycle accidents in Germany.

This report reviews the findings from 86 motorcycle accidents during a 1-year period at the Trauma Center "Bergmannsheil" in Bochum, Germany. A study of the case histories supplemented by telephone conversations yielded the following results: 90.7% of the patients were men, and the average age was 28.8 years; most of the accidents occurred in the 25- to 30-year-old age group (27.9%). Motorcycle accidents happened mostly during recreational rides on weekends in the summertime. Although there was a high rate of helmet use (98.8%), the head region was affected in 12 victims. Two patients died bec

Speeding for fun? Exploring the speeding behavior of riders of heavy motorcycles using the theory of planned behavior and psychological flow theory.

This paper focuses on a special segment of motorcyclists in Taiwan--riders of heavy motorcycles--and investigates their speeding behavior and its affecting factors. It extends the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore motorcyclist speeding behavior by including the variables of psychological flow theory. The levels of sensation-seeking and riding experience are also used as grouping variables to investigate group differences from the influences of their affecting factors on speeding behavior. The results reveal that the psychological flow variables have greater predictive power in explai

Can a Boxer Engine Reduce Leg Injuries Among Motorcyclists? Analysis of Injury Distributions in Crashes Involving Different Motorcycles Fitted with Antilock Brakes (ABS).

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have shown that motorcycle antilock braking systems (ABS) reduce crashes and injuries. However, it has been suggested that the improved stability provided by ABS would make upright crashes more frequent, thus changing the injury distributions among motorcyclists and increasing the risk of leg injuries. The overall motorcycle design can vary across different categories and manufacturers. For instance, some motorcycles are equipped with boxer-twin engines; that is, with protruding cylinder heads. A previous study based on a limited material has suggested that these co

Motorcycle Noise Annoyance in Residential Areas Along Popular Leisure Routes.

Motorcycle noise along leisure routes constitutes a distinct environmental health burden poorly captured by standard road traffic noise indicators. This study derives source-specific exposure-response functions and examines non-acoustic predictors of residential motorcycle noise annoyance. A mixed-methods socio-acoustic design was applied in five study areas in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. A community survey (N = 493) assessed long-term annoyance (12-month recall); a smartphone-based experience-sampling study (MotoApp; N = 213; ten days in summer 2022) collected hourly ratings. Acoustic measur

A 20-Y Analysis of Motorcycle Trauma After Helmet Law Repeal.

INTRODUCTION: After Arkansas repealed its universal motorcycle helmet law in 1997, helmet use decreased and motorcycle-related injuries and fatalities increased. Long-term clinical and population-level impacts of this policy change remain incompletely characterized. This study integrates statewide crash and fatality data with trauma center data to evaluate trends in helmet use, injury severity, and mortality at scene and hospitalization. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed motorcycle-related admissions and emergency department deaths at the state's only adult level I trauma center from 2004

Friction Burns: Defining the Rub of Road Rash After Motorcycle Trauma.

There is a paucity of literature on friction burn epidemiology, injury characteristics, and management after trauma. This study aims to characterize friction burns resulting from motorcycle accidents, evaluate the role of specialized burn surgery teams, and assess the need for operative intervention. The trauma registry of a Level 1 Trauma Center was queried for all admissions after motorcycle accidents between January 2018 and December 2022. Patients were included if there was an external cause of injury code for an abrasion. Chart review was conducted to confirm a road rash injury, identify

An assessment of skeletal fracture patterning resulting from fatal motorcycle crashes.

Motorcycle crashes result in the deaths of hundreds of motorcyclists annually in Australia and Great Britain. To assist with investigations into the circumstances of such events, forensic practitioners may be asked to infer the context in which hard and soft tissue injuries were produced. At present, limited research exists relating to skeletal fracture patterns in motorcycle crash fatalities for forensic practitioners to compare their cases with. Therefore, this study evaluated fracture patterns across the whole-body of 200 deceased adult motorcycle riders and pillion passengers whilst consid

From Blunt Cardiac Injury to Heart Transplant Following Motorcycle Collision.

Traumatic coronary artery occlusion and dissection is an exceedingly rare complication of blunt cardiac injury (BCI), though it has been previously noted in a number of case reports. However, it can also lead to heart transplant, which to our knowledge has not been previously described in the literature. We present a case of a healthy 24-year-old man without significant past medical history who was in a motorcycle accident, resulting in sternal fracture and BCI. He was ultimately found to have thrombotic occlusion and dissection of his left anterior descending artery (LAD), requiring mechanica

When the Helmet Is Not Enough: Forensic Multidisciplinary Reconstruction of a Deadly Motorcycle Accident.

We report the case of a 54-year-old man who died in a motorcycle accident due to loss of control of the vehicle on a viaduct. No other vehicles were apparently involved, except for a car hit by the motorcycle after it fell. A post-mortem CT scan (computed tomography scan) was performed showing complex head trauma with a subarachnoid hemorrhage and multiple skull and facial bone fractures. A forensic cinematic reconstruction performed by an engineer was needed to exclude other incident causes other than the loss of control. The multidisciplinary approach that included autopsy findings, a cinema

Collision versus loss-of-control motorcycle accidents: Comparing injuries and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Motorcycles are a common mode of transport, especially in low-middle-income countries like Pakistan. The pattern and severity of injuries in motorcycle trauma depends on the mechanism of accident, which may be classified as collision accidents (CAs) or loss-of-control accidents (LOCAs). In this study, we aimed to investigate patterns of trauma due to motorcycle CAs and LOCAs, with a focus on injuries, management, complications, and outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Pakistan (a level 1 trauma facility), enrollin
