Reframing language decisions for d/Deaf children through family language policy.

For families of deaf children, early language planning is often shaped by high-pressure decisions and conflicting professional advice. This brief introduces Family Language Policy (FLP) as a practical, strengths-based framework for supporting communication decisions following cochlear implantation. Rather than framing oral and visual languages as competing approaches, FLP acknowledges the diverse values, beliefs, and contexts that shape each family's choices. Drawing on bilingualism research and findings from (McMenamin, 2019) this article highlights that developmental outcomes are not determi

No Difference in Face Scanning Patterns Between Monolingual and Bilingual Infants at 5 Months of Age.

It has been suggested that bilinguals take greater advantage of visual speech cues than monolinguals. Therefore, in a sample of 474 (47.3% females) monolingual and 101 (48.5% females) bilingual infants at 5 months of age, we examined the tendency to look at the eyes versus the mouth of dynamic faces, as well as the latency and ratio of looking at a static face interspersed with non-social objects. No significant differences were found for these measures, suggesting that monolingual and bilingual infants orient to and scan faces in a similar way. Although no association was found between the te

Experience-driven neural efficiency and reserve in aging: Evidence from bilingual attentional adaptation.

Bilingualism offers a powerful test case for understanding how control systems adapt to sustained, variable attentional demands. Converging evidence across behavioral, structural, functional, and clinical literatures indicates that repeated demands for selection, conflict resolution, and language switching are associated with reorganization of control architecture in ways that are consistent with predictive and reinforcement-learning mechanisms, producing two interdependent outcomes. Efficiency emerges as control is redistributed from metabolically costly frontal regions to posterior and subco

Neural signatures of second language proficiency in narrative processing.

Making sense of speech in a second language relies on multiple abilities. Differences in brain activity related to proficiency in language tasks have often been attributed to processing demands. However, during naturalistic narrative comprehension, listeners at different proficiency levels may form different representations of the same speech. We hypothesized that the intersubject synchronization of these representations could be used to measure second-language proficiency. Using a searchlight-shared response model, we found highly proficient participants showed synchronization in regions simi

The Effect of Phonological Overlap on English and Spanish Expressive Vocabulary.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of phonological overlap on English and Spanish expressive vocabulary accuracy as measured by the bilingual Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test-Fourth Edition (EOWPVT-IV). We hypothesized that if languages interact during an expressive vocabulary task, then higher phonological overlap will predict higher expressive vocabulary accuracy, especially in the nondominant language. METHOD: Twenty English-dominant bilingual children (English-Spanish) completed the bilingual EOWPVT-IV. We calculated phonological overlap between 117 English and Spanish wor

Relations between oral language skills and English reading achievement among Spanish-English bilingual children: a quantile regression analysis.

Understanding factors that influence reading achievement among bilingual children is considerably more complex than it is for monolingual children. Research on dual language development indicates that bilingual children's oral language abilities are often distributed across languages in varied ways, due to heterogeneity of dual language exposure and input. Consequently, there may be greater variability in the associations between oral language proficiency and reading achievement among bilingual children than there is for monolingual children. This study evaluated how vocabulary knowledge and m

English phonological specificity predicts early French reading difficulty in emerging bilingual children.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the predictive value of a dynamic test of English and French lexical specificity on at-risk reading classification in 13 at-risk and 44 not at-risk emerging English (L1)-French (L2) bilingual Grade 1 children (M = 75.87 months, SD = 3.18) enrolled in an early French immersion program in Canada. Lexical specificity was assessed with a computerized word learning game in which children were taught new English (e.g., "foal" and "sole") and French (e.g., bac "bin" and bague "ring") word pairs contrasted by minimal phonological differences. The results

Bilinguals have more complex EEG brain signals in occipital regions than monolinguals.

Brain signal complexity increases with development and is associated with better cognitive outcomes in older age. Research has also shown that bilinguals are able to stave off cognitive decline for longer periods of time than monolinguals, but no studies to date have examined whether bilinguals have more complex brain signals than monolinguals. Here we explored the hypothesis that bilingualism leads to greater brain signal complexity by examining multiscale entropy (MSE) in monolingual and bilingual young adults while EEG was recorded during a task-switching paradigm. Results revealed that bil

Flexibility in Bilingual Infants' Word Learning.

The present experiments tested bilingual infants' developmental narrowing for the interpretation of sounds that form words. These studies addressed how language specialization proceeds when the environment provides varied and divergent input. Experiment 1 (N = 32) demonstrated that bilingual 14- and 19-month-olds learned a pair of object labels consisting of the same syllable produced with distinct pitch contours (rising and falling). Infants' native languages did not use pitch contour to differentiate words. In Experiment 2 (N = 16), 22-month-old bilinguals failed to learn the labels. These r

Not that cloze: Sentence constraint is influenced by language and language dominance.

In the fields of language processing and prediction, cloze tests are used to establish sentence constraint norms. The validity of cloze test results depends heavily on how closely the pre-test population matches the main study population, and yet there is limited evidence on how sociolinguistic variables may influence sentence constraint. Here, we investigate how language and language dominance influence sentence constraint at the lexical level by conducting a cloze test across different language groups and comparing response entropy. In Analysis 1, sentence constraint was similarly high for S

Bilingual Performance of Large Language Models in Answering Consumer Health Questions in English and Chinese: Comparative Benchmark Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as health information intermediaries. Whether they provide comparable accuracy and communication quality across languages has direct implications for health information equity; however, systematic bilingual evaluations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a preliminary bilingual benchmark evaluating whether 11 LLMs deliver comparable accuracy and communication quality when answering identical consumer health questions in English and Chinese. METHODS: We conducted a controlled evaluation of 11 LLMs (GPT-4.5, Clau

The use of preferred target stimuli on the acquisition of a small foreign vocabulary.

There is a growing body of research examining the efficacy of teaching a foreign language using procedures that would lead to generative learning. This study assessed the acquisition of foreign tacts and the emergence of bidirectional intraverbal responses (native-foreign and foreign-native) as a function of target stimulus preference. Three children learned to tact two sets of pictures (low- and high-preferred targets) presented in an adapted alternating-treatments design. Emergent intraverbal responses were evaluated across both directions before and after instruction. The results showed tha

Building the Spanish-Speaking Workforce: A Bilingual Training Model.

BACKGROUND: Training opportunities for Spanish-speaking mental health clinicians are insufficient, and often non-existent in many healthcare settings, despite the increasing Latinx population and high levels of mental health needs. OBJECTIVE: Given the many complexities involved in providing mental health services in Spanish, it is critical to develop ample training opportunities for bilingual trainees before they practice independently. METHOD: To address this need, we developed a comprehensive bilingual training program for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral psychology trainees working in a pe

Memory representations are flexibly adapted to orthographic systems: A comparison of English and Hebrew.

Across languages, speech unfolds in the same temporal order, constrained by the forward flow of time. But the way phonology is spatially mapped onto orthography is language-specific, ranging from left-to-right, right-to-left, and top-to-bottom, among others. While the direction of writing systems influences how known words are visually processed, it is unclear whether it influences learning and memory for novel orthographic regularities. The present study tested English and Hebrew speakers on an orthographic word-referent mapping task in their native orthographies (written left-to-right and ri

Reading and writing in English as a foreign language: Spanish children with and without dyslexia.

In a world where English reigns as the most spoken language, proficiency in English literacy is indispensable. Within this context, it is imperative to acknowledge the significant hurdles encountered by Spanish children in mastering English, particularly in reading and writing. The learning process is intricate, influenced by various factors such as orthographic and phonological differences between languages and the depth of the orthographic system. This chapter explores the critical importance of English literacy for Spanish children, both typically developing and with dyslexia, as they learn

Factorial validity and comparability of the six translations of the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire translations: results from the CENTER-TBI study.

BACKGROUND: Comparison of patient-reported outcomes in multilingual studies requires evidence of the equivalence of translated versions of the questionnaires. The present study examines the factorial validity and comparability of six language versions of the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) administered to individuals following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research (CENTER-TBI) study. METHODS: Six competing RPQ models were estimated using data from Dutch (n = 597), English (n = 223), Finnish (n = 213), Italian (n =

Can bilingualism increase neuroplasticity of language networks in epilepsy?

Individuals with left temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have a higher rate of atypical (i.e., bilateral or right hemisphere) language lateralization compared to healthy controls. In addition, bilinguals have been observed to have a less left-lateralized pattern of language representation. We examined the combined influence of bilingual language experience and side of seizure focus on language lateralization profiles in TLE to determine whether bilingualism promotes re-organization of language networks. Seventy-two monolingual speakers of English (21 left TLE; LTLE, 22 right TLE; RTLE, 29 age-matche
