[The Development of Vibration System for Applying Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) to the Supraspinatus Muscle].

Palpation is a standard clinical tool to diagnose abnormal stiffness changes in soft tissues. However, it is difficult to palpate the supraspinatus muscle because it locates under the trapezius muscle. The magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) uses harmonic mechanical excitation to quantitatively measure the stiffness (shear modulus) of both the superficial and deep tissues. The purpose of this study was to build a vibration system for applying the MRE to the supraspinatus muscle. In this study, a power amplifier and a pneumatic pressure generator were used to supply vibrations to a vibration

Loss of muscle mass: Current developments in cachexia and sarcopenia focused on biomarkers and treatment.

Loss of muscle mass arises from an imbalance of protein synthesis and protein degradation. Potential triggers of muscle wasting and function are immobilization, loss of appetite, dystrophies and chronic diseases as well as aging. All these conditions lead to increased morbidity and mortality in patients, which makes it a timely matter to find new biomarkers to get a fast clinical diagnosis and to develop new therapies. This mini-review covers current developments in the field of biomarkers and drugs on cachexia and sarcopenia. Here, we reported about promising markers, e.g. tartrate-resistant

Muscle connective tissue controls development of the diaphragm and is a source of congenital diaphragmatic hernias.

The diaphragm is an essential mammalian skeletal muscle, and defects in diaphragm development are the cause of congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDHs), a common and often lethal birth defect. The diaphragm is derived from multiple embryonic sources, but how these give rise to the diaphragm is unknown, and, despite the identification of many CDH-associated genes, the etiology of CDH is incompletely understood. Using mouse genetics, we show that the pleuroperitoneal folds (PPFs), which are transient embryonic structures, are the source of the diaphragm's muscle connective tissue and regulate mus

Changes in muscle activity in typically developing children walking with unilaterally induced equinus.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing changes in lower limb muscle activation during gait caused by abnormal motor control or adaptations to the presence of a fixed equinus remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to determine a threshold degree of equinus at which changes in muscle activity occur and to characterize adaptive patterns of muscle activity in typically developing children walking with unilateral induced equinus. METHODS: Ten typically developing children were included. A customized orthosis was fitted to the right ankle. Five conditions of dorsiflexion limitation were evaluated

Temporal development of muscle atrophy in murine model of arthritis is related to disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, affecting mainly the joint but also other tissues. RA patients usually present weakness and muscle atrophy, nonarticular manifestations of the disease. Although causing great impact, the understanding of muscle atrophy, its development, and the mechanisms involved is still very limited. The objective of this study is to evaluate the development of muscle atrophy in skeletal muscle of a murine model of arthritis. METHODS: The experimental murine model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was used. D

Prenatal alcohol exposure and early postnatal changes in the developing nerve-muscle system.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research on prenatal alcohol exposure has proven the potent teratogenicity of this substance of abuse. Children born to alcoholic mothers are often diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Those afflicted with FAS often have muscle weakness, muscle wasting, and atrophy. This study assessed the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing rat neuromuscular system. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally with 1.0 ml of 20% ethyl alcohol/100 gm body weight. Unexposed rats served as controls. The offspring were killed 2, 3, 4, and

The AeAct-4 gene is expressed in the developing flight muscles of female Aedes aegypti.

Population reduction of mosquitoes is an effective method for controlling dengue fever and malaria transmission. Recent developments in control techniques include proposals to construct transgenic strains of mosquitoes carrying dominant, conditional-lethal genes under the control of sex- and stage-specific promoters. In order to identify such promoters, subtractive cDNA libraries derived from male and female pupal mRNA of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, were constructed and screened. A cDNA clone, F49, corresponds to a gene expressed specifically in female pupae. Sequence analyses re

The development of adult abdominal muscles in Drosophila: myoblasts express twist and are associated with nerves.

During metamorphosis, the adult muscles of the Drosophila abdomen develop from pools of myoblasts that are present in the larva. The adult myoblasts express twist in the third larval instar and the early pupa and are closely associated with nerves. Growing adult nerves and the twist-expressing cells migrate out across the developing abdominal epidermis, and as twist expression declines, the myoblasts begin to synthesize beta 3 tubulin. There follows a process involving cell fusion and segregation into cell groups to form multinucleate muscle precursors. These bipolar precursors migrate at both

Predictive Model Development and Validation for Low Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass in Chinese Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Low skeletal muscle mass is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Due to constraints related to cost and equipment availability, direct measurement of skeletal muscle mass is often not feasible in routine practice. This study aimed to develop and validate a practical predictive model for identifying low appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) in older adults. METHODS: Body composition was assessed using DXA in the development group and BIA in the validation group. Standard questionnaires and anthropometric measurements were completed by trained testers. A predictive model wa

RRAGD p.(Ser76Leu) Variant Causes Dysregulated Expression of Muscle Development and Cytoskeleton Genes in Cardiomyocytes.

Autosomal dominant kidney hypomagnesemia with RRAGD variants (ADKH-RRAGD) is a hereditary disorder characterized by kidney tubulopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). RagD, encoded by the RRAGD gene, is a small GTPase involved in activating the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) by amino acids. Although several gain-of-function variants in the RRAGD gene have been identified, their contributions to DCM remain unclear. Here, we hypothesize that these RRAGD variants induce mTORC1 overactivation, thereby contributing to the manifestation of DCM. To investigate this, we establish

Basal Tone, Muscle Memory and Denervation: Pathophysiological Foundations of Abdominal Wall Hernia Development and Recovery.

Modern abdominal wall hernia surgery is centered on the biomechanics of the fascial-aponeurotic framework and on intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) control; neuromuscular regulation of the wall remains outside perioperative planning. This review reframes the abdominal wall as a coordinated neuromuscular system and outlines a framework in which ventral herniation is hypothesized to represent a compensatory response to altered regulation of elevated IAP, while discoordinated contraction of the muscular layers is proposed as a potential predisposing factor. A structured literature search was performe

Precancer exercise capacity and metabolism during tumor development coordinate the skeletal muscle-tumor metabolic competition.

Higher exercise capacity and regular exercise training improve cancer prognosis at all stages of disease. However, the metabolic adaptations to aerobic exercise training that mediate tumor-host interactions are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that voluntary wheel running slows tumor growth and repartitions glucose uptake and oxidation to skeletal and cardiac muscle and away from breast and melanoma tumors in mice. Further, prehabilitation induces repartitioning of glucose metabolism in obese mice: Uptake and oxidation of glucose are enhanced in skeletal and cardiac muscle, and reduced

Muscle contraction type-specific association of acceleration and deceleration performance with rates of force development.

BACKGROUND: Many sports require rapid acceleration and deceleration, particularly when changing direction. These movements require a large impulse, highlighting the importance of rates of force development (RFDs). However, the relationships between acceleration and deceleration performance and concentric and eccentric RFDs have remained uncertain. This study evaluated the correlation between RFDs in different muscle contraction types and acceleration and deceleration performances. METHODS: This study included 28 healthy subjects (13 males and 15 females; age: 21 ± 2 years; height: 1.66 ± 0.09

Development and validation of a portable articulated dynamometry system to assess knee extensor muscle strength.

Muscle strength assessment is important in predicting clinical and functional outcomes in many disorders. Manual muscle testing, although commonly used, offers suboptimal accuracy and reliability. Isokinetic dynamometers (IKDs) have excellent accuracy and reliability; but are bulky and expensive, offering limited accessibility. This study aimed to design a portable dynamometer that is accessible, accurate and reliable, and to validate the device in a general population. The portable articulated dynamometry system (PADS) is a portable device with an embedded high-precision load cell, designed t

E-cigarette aerosol impairs male mouse skeletal muscle force development and prevents recovery from injury.

To date, there has been a lag between the rise in E-cigarette use and an understanding of the long-term health effects. Inhalation of E-cigarette aerosol delivers high doses of nicotine, raises systemic cytokine levels, and compromises cardiopulmonary function. The consequences for muscle function have not been thoroughly investigated. The present study tests the hypothesis that exposure to nicotine-containing aerosol impairs locomotor muscle function, limits exercise tolerance, and interferes with muscle repair in male mice. Nicotine-containing aerosol reduced the maximal force produced by th

Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossifications Recapitulate Hematopoietic Stem Cell Niche Development Within an Adult Osteogenic Muscle Environment.

Hematopoiesis and bone interact in various developmental and pathological processes. Neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) are the formation of ectopic hematopoietic bones in peri-articular muscles that develop following severe lesions of the central nervous system such as traumatic cerebral or spinal injuries or strokes. This review will focus on the hematopoietic facet of NHO. The characterization of NHO demonstrates the presence of hematopoietic marrow in which quiescent hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are maintained by a functional stromal microenvironment, thus documenting that NHOs a

High muscle-to-fat ratio is associated with lower risk of chronic kidney disease development.

BACKGROUND: Obesity, a known risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD), is generally assessed using body mass index (BMI). However, BMI may not effectively reflect body composition, and the impact of muscle-to-fat (MF) mass balance on kidney function has not been elucidated. This study evaluated the association between body muscle and fat mass balance, represented as the MF ratio, and incident CKD development. METHODS: Data were retrieved from a prospective community-based cohort study (Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study). Muscle and fat mass were measured using multifrequency bioelectri
