Anticholinergic Adverse Effects Associated With Skeletal Muscle Relaxants in the Intensive Care Unit.

Background: Pain is prevalent among critically ill patients and is frequently underrecognized due to sedation and mechanical ventilation. Opioids remain the primary analgesic therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU); however, opioid-related adverse effects have prompted increased adoption of multimodal analgesia strategies. Centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants, including cyclobenzaprine and methocarbamol, are commonly used as adjuncts, yet data evaluating their anticholinergic adverse effects in critically ill populations are limited. Methods: The primary objective of this study is to de

Rocuronium-sugammadex as an alternative muscle relaxant to succinylcholine in electroconvulsive therapy: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) requires optimal muscle relaxation, which is conventionally achieved with succinylcholine (SCC) despite its adverse effects. In this context, rocuronium-sugammadex (RS) has emerged as a potential alternative, but its comparative efficacy remains uncertain. Hence, this meta-analysis evaluated the recovery times, seizure duration, and safety of these agents in ECT. AIM: To compare the recovery times, seizure duration, and side effect profiles of RS and SCC in ECT. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library (from inception to June 2025) were system

Effects of a Muscle Relaxation Technique on Catatonia Symptoms Associated With Schizophrenia: A Case Report.

Catatonia is characterized by the loss of voluntary control over the workings of the mind and body. It disrupts daily life by manifesting as idle posture, heightened muscle tone, and repetitive purposeless movements. However, specific physiotherapy methods addressing these symptoms are yet to be established. This case report describes a 63-year-old man hospitalized for schizophrenia who was then diagnosed with stuporous catatonia based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria, characterized by catalepsy, mutism, and diffic

Antidiarrheal, antisecretory and intestinal smooth muscle relaxant effects of Platanus orientalis in mice.

Platanus orientalis is traditionally used to treat diarrhea and spasm. However, studies are lacking on its mechanism of action in diarrhea and spasm. Pharmacological in-vivo activities were performed. In-vitro activities were carried out to explore the underlying mechanism(s) of action in isolated tissue preparations of mice jejunum and ileum. Crude extract of Platanus orientalis, loperamide and verapamil were used. The crude extract provided dose-dependent protection in castor oil diarrhea like verapamil and reduced the intestinal fluid accumulation and charcoal meal transit distance. In-vitr

The Relaxant Effect of Crocin on Rat Tracheal Smooth Muscle and Its Possible Mechanisms.

Crocin, a component of saffron, showed hypotensive activity which is perhaps due to vascular smooth muscle relaxant effect. The relaxant effects of saffron on tracheal smooth muscle also could be due to its constituent, crocin. In the present study, the relaxant effects of crocin and its possible mechanisms on rat tracheal smooth muscle were investigated. The relaxant effects of three cumulative concentrations of crocin (30, 60, and 120 μM) or theophylline (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mM) as positive control were examined on pre-contracted tracheal smooth muscle by methacholine or KCl in non-incubated or in

Sex Differences in 2-DOF Human Ankle Stiffness in Relaxed and Contracted Muscles.

Ankle stiffness has been known as one of the most important components contributing to the maintenance of lower body stability during postural balance and locomotion. It has been repeatedly shown that women have lower stability and increased risk of injury when compared to men participating in similar sports activities, yet sex differences in neuromuscular control of the ankle, including the modulation of ankle stiffness, and their contribution to stability remain unknown. To identify sex differences in human ankle stiffness, this study quantified multi-dimensional ankle stiffness in 20 young,

Severity of ineffective esophageal motility is associated with utilization of skeletal muscle relaxant medications.

BACKGROUND: Ineffective esophageal motility (IEM) is the most common finding on high-resolution esophageal manometry (HREM). The underlying mechanisms for IEM remain to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to determine if utilization of skeletal muscle relaxants is associated with IEM, and with more severe subtypes of the disorder. METHODS: Patients with diagnosis of IEM were gender and age matched to patients with normal HREM. Demographic information, symptoms, endoscopic findings, medication usage and medical comorbidities were recorded. Patients with a diagnosis of IEM were divid

Effect of maturity and infection on the rate of relaxation of the respiratory muscles in ventilated, newborn infants.

AIM: To assess the respiratory muscle time constant of relaxation (τ), an index of respiratory muscle function in ventilated newborns. METHODS: Sixty-two infants (42 born prematurely) with a median gestational age of 29 [interquartile range (IQR) 26-37] weeks were prospectively studied. Measurement of τ was taken during spontaneous breathing on endotracheal continuous positive airway pressure prior to extubation, and τ was calculated from the reciprocal of the slope of the airway pressure decline versus time. Infants were classified as having had systemic or respiratory infection (positive mi

Transtracheal lidocaine: An alternative to intraoperative propofol infusion when muscle relaxants are not used.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve monitoring, often required during total parotidectomy, precludes use of long acting muscle relaxants and propofol infusion is used solely to ensure patient immobility. We aimed to compare intraoperative patient immobility, hemodynamic stability and propofol consumption during total parotidectomy following a transtracheal block. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty patients were allocated to 2 equal groups. Preoperatively, group A patients received transtracheal block with 4 ml of 4% lidocaine, while no block was given to patients in group B. If there was patient movement, tach

Tizanidine (Zanaflex): a muscle relaxant that may prolong the QT interval by blocking IKr.

BACKGROUND: Tizanidine (Zanaflex) is a centrally acting imidazoline muscle relaxant that is structurally similar to clonidine (α(2)-adrenergic agonist) but not to other myorelaxants such as baclofen or benzodiazepines. Interestingly, cardiac arrhythmias and QT interval prolongation have been reported with tizanidine. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of tizanidine on cardiac ventricular repolarization. METHODS: (1) Whole-cell patch-clamp experiments: HERG- or KCNQ1+KCNE1-transfected cells were exposed to tizanidine 0.1-100 µmol/L (n = 29 cells, total) to assess drug effect on the rapid (I(K

Total intravenous anesthesia without muscle relaxant in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

A 63-year-old woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was scheduled for open reduction and internal fixation of the right tibia. Total intravenous anesthesia using propofol and remifentanil without muscle relaxant was selected as the anesthetic method, in order to avoid the possible occurrence of ventilatory depression due to abnormal responses to muscle relaxants and exacerbation of the motor neuron disease. After standard and neuromuscular monitoring devices were applied, anesthesia was induced and maintained with target controlled infusion of propofol and remifentanil in the range of

Human meconium has a pulmonary vascular and airway smooth muscle relaxant effect.

Meconium aspiration is believed to cause persistent pulmonary hypertension syndrome of the newborn (PPHN) via vasoconstriction, whereas meconium has a relaxant effect on rat tracheal muscle. We evaluated the meconium effect on lung vascular and airway muscle. Three-days old and adult rat 3rd-4th generation arteries and adjacent bronchi were studied in vitro. Fresh homogenized meconium did not induce arterial or airway muscle contraction. In precontracted arteries, meconium induced muscle relaxation that was greater (p < 0.01) in the newborn (53 +/- 5%), when compared with adult vessels (34 +/-

Comparative analysis of nitric oxide and SALMFamide neuropeptides as general muscle relaxants in starfish.

Previous studies have established that the gaseous signalling molecule nitric oxide (NO) and the SALMFamide neuropeptides S1 and S2 cause cardiac stomach relaxation in the starfish Asterias rubens. Here we show that S1, S2 and the NO donor SNAP also cause relaxation of two other preparations from Asterias - tube feet and the apical muscle of the body wall. The rank order of effectiveness as muscle relaxants when tested at a concentration of 10 micro mol l(-1) was SNAP>S2>S1 for both tube feet and apical muscle whereas for cardiac stomach it was S2>S1>SNAP. Significantly, these data indicate th
