Issues in the handling of cases of tuberculosis in the mortuary.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) that is most often transmitted by the inhalation of bacteria-containing aerosols. While there has been a decline in numbers of cases in certain countries, large population movements, the increasing emergence of drug-resistant strains and the association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection make it a disease that is increasingly seen in forensic practice. Mortuary staff are at risk of infection from penetrating sharp injuries, droplet inhalation, ingestion, direct inoculation, through skin breaks

Injuries as exposure events in providing medical services by nursing staff.

INTRODUCTION: Among medical staff, nurses are particularly vulnerable to occupational exposure since they provide direct patient care and perform medical activities which often involve using sharps. AIM: The objective of the study was to examine the frequency of injuries and their causes in nursing. METHODS: A diagnostic survey was employed using an original questionnaire. The study was carried out from 3rd March to 2nd April 2017. The study group comprised part-time nursing students. 107 respondents participating in the study worked in out-patient (28%) and in-patient (72%) healthcare. Most

Underreporting of blood and body fluid exposures among health care students and trainees in the acute care setting: a 2007 survey.

BACKGROUND: It has been estimated that more than 8 million health care workers (HCWs) in the United States may be exposed to blood and body fluids via sharp and mucocutaneous exposures. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed among 505 HCWs. The target sample population included all the medical students; nursing professionals; dental professionals; and residents in internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois, a metropolitan tertiary care and referral center for Northern Illinois and N

Management of occupational and nonoccupational postexposure HIV prophylaxis.

The principles of managing patients with recent HIV exposures are similar whether the exposure occurs in an occupational or nonoccupational setting. For both settings, clinicians should 1) assess the likelihood that HIV and other bloodborne viruses will be transmitted as a consequence of the exposure; 2) advise the patient about the risks and benefits of treatment; 3) choose an appropriate antiretroviral treatment regimen (if the decision is made to treat); 4) screen for other illnesses that may complicate treatment or follow-up; 5) counsel patients about the importance of adhering to treatmen

[Costs of accidental punctures in hospital health personnel].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to calculate the average cost of each hepatitis B, C and HIV follow-up carried out in the health personnel that have suffered an exposure to blood and body fluids and to estimate the cost for each of the different types of sources as well as to identify the items that account for the main part of the cost. METHODS: A cost analysis was carried out. The post-exposure programme was modelled in a decision tree combining probabilities (percentage of each type of source in dependence of its positivity for the three viruses and immunization state of the health p

[The management of acute hepatitis C and needlestick accidents with hepatitis-C virus positive blood].

Acute hepatitis C is rarely diagnosed, in part because of its usually subclinical course. Infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) has a high chronicity rate, 70-90%. The risk of infection after a needlestick accident with HCV positive blood is 3-10%. There are no efficacious preventive measures regarding HCV infection but treatment with the antiviral drug interferon alpha during the acute phase of the disease has shown to significantly reduce the risk of subsequent chronic infection. It is advised to evaluate individuals who were exposed to infected blood by a needlestick accident regarding

Study of needlestick accidents and hepatitis C virus infection in healthcare workers by molecular evolutionary analysis.

In the five-year period between 1989 and 1993, 87 needlestick accidents occurred among healthcare workers at our hospital. Thirty-seven (43%) of these needlestick accidents involved blood contaminated with hepatitis C virus (HCV), and two of them (5.4%) led to the occurrence of hepatitis C infection. Case 1 was a 43-year-old nurse who was accidentally injured by a needle contaminated with blood from a patient who had cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma due to hepatitis C. Acute hepatitis C occurred after five weeks and HCV RNA was positive after eight weeks. Case 2 was a 33-year-old nurse w

[A case of needlestick-induced acute type C hepatitis].

The patient was a 25-year-old male doctor, who had pricked his finger with a needle contaminated with blood from a 69-year-old male patient with liver cirrhosis (HCV-Ab positive, genotype II). He was informed from the blood bank that his blood was positive for anti-HCV and his GPT being 148 IU/l on the 65th day after exposure. He was admitted on February 16, 1993 and received a liver biopsy, which was consistent with acute viral hepatitis. His genotype was the same (type II) with the donor patient. IFN-alpha-2b of total doses of 656 Megaunits resolved the hepatitis completely and the HCV-RNA b

Community needlestick accident data and trends in environmental quality.

New health-based indicators of environmental quality are being sought. In this search a retrospective analysis was undertaken for all persons in England and Wales who, during 1988-91, were given Hepatitis B Immune Globulin (HBIG) in prophylaxis against Hepatitis B infection after accidental percutaneous or permucosal exposure, and for whom a surveillance form was returned to the Public Health Laboratory Service Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, England and Wales (PHLS CDSC). Although the number of adult HBIG doses issued during 1988-90 increased annually from 1,907 to 2,850, the percen

[Surgery in ophthalmology during pregnancy].

The new Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG) enacted in 2018, is intended to enable pregnant employees to carry out their work, to protect the pregnant employee and the child and to counteract discrimination. Nevertheless, a ban on surgical activities or even a ban on employment is often issued, although the law first requires the workplace to be reorganized to enable the pregnant employee to continue working. In many cases, such bans are issued without the legally required risk assessment, which constitutes prohibited discrimination. In ophthalmology, the sedentary nature of the work and the sho

Complete Blood Count Collected Via Venipuncture Versus Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter in Hematological Patients: A Comparison of 2 Methods.

BACKGROUND: The use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in cancer care is increasing over traditional central venous catheters. Nurses frequently collect blood by venipuncture when a PICC is inserted, as there is no available evidence to confirm the reliability of blood tests collected through PICCs in adults. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of blood samples for complete blood count (CBC) obtained through PICCs as an alternative to venipuncture. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used to recruit adult hematological patients. The blood samples

Determinants of Work-Related Risks among Veterinary Clinical Students in South West Nigeria.

Veterinary practices or activities expose professionals, including students, to hazards associated with animal contact. To describe workplace health and safety status and risk factors associated with hazards among veterinary clinical students in South West Nigeria, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using a semistructured questionnaire. Data on demographics, health and safety (HS) status, work-related hazards, healthcare facilities, and immunisation history were obtained. Of 167 students recruited, 100 (60.2%) were males, and >77.1% fell within the age group of 21-25 years. Many participan

Transmission of human immunodeficiency virus to sexual partners of hemophiliacs.

To examine the variables associated with heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), we studied 32 couples in our hemophilia center who had steady sexual relationships for periods more than 1 year. Of the 32 sexual partners of the hemophiliacs, five (15.6%) were HIV seropositive. All five hemophiliacs with HIV transmission to their sexual partners had measurable immunologic deficiencies, as shown by their lower median T-helper (CD-4+) lymphocyte count of 172 cells/mm3. The hemophiliacs without transmission had a slightly higher median CD-4+ count of 297 cells/mm3 (P = .26)

Prevalence and associated factors of needle stick and sharps injuries among healthcare workers in northwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Needle stick and sharp injuries (NSSIs) are a common problem among healthcare workers (HCWs). Although the factors related to NSSIs for HCWs are well documented by several studies in Ethiopia, no evidence has been reported about the magnitude of and factors related to NSSIs in hospitals in northwestern Ethiopia. METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional study was carried out from January to March 2019 among 318 HCWs in three randomly-selected hospitals of the eight hospitals found in South Gondar Zone. Sample sizes were proportionally allocated to professional categories. Stud
