A needs assessment for a minor eye condition service within Leeds, Bradford and Airedale, UK.

BACKGROUND: There are a number of limitations to the present primary eye care system in the UK. Patients with minor eye conditions typically either have to present to their local hospital or GP, or face a charge when visiting eye care professionals (optometrists). Some areas of the UK have commissioned enhanced community services to alleviate this problem; however, many areas have not. The present study is a needs assessment of three areas (Leeds, Airedale and Bradford) without a Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS), with the aim of determining whether such a service is clinically or economical

Needs Assessment for Creating a Patient-Centered, Community-Engaged Health Program for Homeless Pregnant Women.

PURPOSE: Women who experience homelessness during pregnancy have poorer birth outcomes than the general population. METHODS: Two 1-hour focus groups were held at a shelter for women who are homeless and/or victims of domestic violence. A total of 13 women p

The development of a new cardiac rehabilitation needs assessment tool (CRNAT) for individualised secondary prevention.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention are evidence-based strategies to reduce the risk of recurrent cardiac events but are underutilised. New approaches are required to improve uptake. METHODS: A new cardiac rehabilitation needs assessment tool (CRNAT), for use by cardiology ward nurses, was developed and refined in collaboration with stakeholders through action research. The tool documented patients' risk factors, initiated a discussion about secondary prevention and linked patients to post-discharge follow-up. The initial version of the tool was developed through consu

Hmong mental health needs assessment: a community-based partnership in a small mid-Western community.

The overall goal of this assessment was to verify the mental health needs of Hmong living in a mid-west community in order clarify the format, content, and feasibility of providing mental health services for Hmong in the future. Illness surveillance and rapid needs assessment among Hurricane Katrina evacuees--Colorado, September 1-23, 2005.

After Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, approximately 200,000 evacuees were sent to shelters in 18 states. On September 3, 2005, Colorado was asked to assist in sheltering some of the evacuees; the next day the first evacuees were airlifted into the Denver area, where they were housed at the former Lowry Air Force Base. During the next 4 weeks, 3,600 evacuees registered at Lowry, with an average of 400 persons in residence per day. Other persons self-evacuated to other parts of the state, including approximately 2,000 who went to Colorado Springs. In all, an esti

Alcohol and drug CAGE screeners for pregnant, low-income women: the California Perinatal Needs Assessment.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a revised CAGE and a new drug version of the CAGE as screeners for risk of heavier or problem alcohol and/or drug use among a population of low-income, pregnant women and adolescents (n = 1147) recruited from 19 agencies in two California counties. Two versions of the CAGE were used in this analysis: (1) the 4-item Alcohol CAGE, using the year before knowing about pregnancy as the timeframe (as opposed to lifetime prevalence), and (2) a newly developed 4-item Drug CAGE using the same timeframe. The two instruments were assessed on sensitivity, specifici

Clinical Benefit and Risk Profile of TV-46000 for Patients with Schizophrenia as Assessed by Number Needed to Treat and Number Needed to Harm.

PURPOSE: Long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) are underused, despite advantages in terms of patient outcomes. The Phase 3 RIsperidone Subcutaneous Extended-release (RISE) study evaluated the efficacy and safety of TV-46000, a subcutaneously administered long-acting formulation of risperidone, administered monthly (q1m) and once every 2 months (q2m), in patients with schizophrenia. During the relapse-prevention phase, TV-46000 significantly prolonged time to impending relapse versus placebo, with a safety profile comparable to other risperidone formulations. This post hoc study examined

Assessing Unmet Social Needs in Multiple Sclerosis Care in Australia: A Qualitative Assessment of Feasibility, Barriers and Enablers.

BACKGROUND: Unmet social needs (including housing, transport and social inclusion) contribute substantially to health outcomes, especially for people with long-term health conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether assessment of unmet social needs occurs in MS clinical care is unclear. This study aims to (1) understand current practices, (2) identify barriers and enablers to social needs assessments in MS care, and (3) explore the feasibility of social needs screening tools. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study comprised focus groups and interviews with clinicians, carers and

Towards a strategic assessment of brain sciences in Latin America: current status, strengths and structural needs.

Latin America and the Caribbean have a long-standing tradition in brain research characterized by unique regional features. However, the region faces significant hurdles in maintaining pace with the rapid global advances in Brain Sciences observed over the last few decades. The Latin America Brain Initiative (LATBrain) was established to integrate regional efforts and catalyze the interdisciplinary development of Brain Sciences. To support this mission, LATBrain conducted the first survey to assess the perceptions of researchers, students, and professionals regarding opportunities and systemic

Evaluation of the Emergency Care Preparedness of Frontline Junior Doctors: A Training Needs Assessment in Ghana.

Introduction In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ghana, junior doctors - house officers and medical officers - serve as the primary frontline providers of emergency care, often in resource-limited settings. Despite their critical role, emergency medicine (EM) training in undergraduate and housemanship curricula remains non-standardized. This study conducted a bottom-up training needs assessment to identify clinical and procedural gaps among junior doctors in Ghana. Methods A cross-sectional digital survey was conducted among 75 junior doctors (house officers and medical officers w
