Pleomorphic neoplasms are typically associated with high-grade malignant behavior, but this does not readily apply to primary cutaneous tumors. Despite morphologic features suggestive of malignancy, atypical fibroxanthoma, the classic example of a pleomorphic dermal neoplasm, is characterized by indolent clinical behavior. Atypical fibroxanthoma is a distinctive clinicopathologic disease affecting sun-damaged skin of elderly males. Histologically, it is often ulcerated and dermal based with pushing growth, characterized by a sheet-like and fascicular growth of pleomorphic epithelioid, spindled

PURPOSE: Although the most common neoplastic lesion of the oral cavity is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), primary neoplastic lesions of the hard palate have not been systematically reviewed to date. The aim of this study was to determine the histopathologic composition and characteristics of neoplasms of the hard palate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 66 patients with a primary neoplasm of the hard palate managed at the authors' institution from 1985 through 2012 was performed. Demographic features, malignancy rate, histopathologic characteristics and distribution, TNM stag

Philadelphia-chromosome negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms are clonal hematologic diseases characterized by hematopoietic progenitor independence from or hypersensitivity to cytokines. The cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of myeloproliferative neoplasms have not yet been fully clarified. Pathophysiologic findings relevant for myeloproliferative neoplasms are associated with genetic alterations, such as, somatic mutation in the gene that codifies JAK-2 (JAK V617F). Deregulation of the process of programmed cellular death, called apoptosis, seems to pa

Benign sinonasal neoplasms are a heterogeneous group of tumors that present with similar symptoms including nasal obstruction, anosmia, rhinorrhea, and epistaxis. The proper workup and accurate diagnosis is essential for these tumors so that the appropriate treatment plan can be established. In this article of benign sinonasal neoplasms, we discuss their typical clinical presentation, histological and radiographic findings, and treatment options.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) are subdivided by lesion morphology, behavior, and surface receptors. Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) are derived from CD4+ effector or central memory T-cells respectively. MF presents clinically as patches, plaques, or tumors, and SS presents with erythroderma. After MF/SS, the next most common CTCLs are CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders: self-regressing lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) or tumors of anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL), which express high levels of tumor necrosis factor death receptor member 8, also called CD30. Although MF is

The myeloproliferative neoplasms represent a diverse group of hematologic malignancies that have been the subject of intense investigation over the last decade. Although clinical trials of the much anticipated small molecule inhibitors of Janus kinase 2 have shown that these experimental agents are successful in palliating many of the symptoms associated with the myeloproliferative neoplasms, they have not been reported to affect the disease initiating hematopoietic stem cell population or to alter the natural history of these disorders. Investigators remain optimistic that new information abo

Thoracic neoplasms, which include lung cancers, esophageal carcinoma, and thymic epithelial tumors, are the leading causes of tumor-related death and a major health concern worldwide. The development of neoplasms is a multistep process involving both genetic and epigenetic alterations. A growing body of research provides evidence that aberrant DNA methylation, including DNA hypermethylation in promoter regions, global DNA hypomethylation and the overexpression of DNA methyltransferases, plays an important role in tumorigenesis. In this review, we summarize published observations of methylation

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs; formerly chronic myeloproliferative disorders) are a class of myeloid hematologic malignancies that represent a stem cell-derived expansion of 1 or more hematopoietic cell lineages. The current 2008 World Health Organization system recognizes 8 types of MPN: chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic neutrophilic leukemia, polycythemia vera, primary myelofibrosis, essential thrombocythemia, chronic eosinophilic leukemia, mastocytosis, and myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable. This review summarizes the salient characteristics of the MPNs, with emphasis on

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are clonal haemopoietic progenitor cell disorders characterized by the proliferation of one or more of the haemopoietic lineages (myeloid, erythroid and/or megakaryocytic). The MPNs include eight haematological disorders: chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), primary myelofibrosis (PMF), systemic mastocytosis (SM), chronic eosinophilic leukemia, not otherwise specified (CEL, NOS), chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL), and unclassifiable MPN (MPN, U). Therapeutic interventions for MPNs include the use of tyr

This article reviews the features of dendritic cells (DCs) of myeloid-derived, plasmacytoid, and follicle-associated types and tumors of these cells, as well as myeloid sarcoma. The morphologic and immunophenotypic features in this group of neoplasms is featured, including mature neoplasms such as Langerhans cell histiocytosis, its malignant counterpart Langerhans cell sarcoma, and S100-negative histiocytic proliferations. More immature or precursor malignancies in this group include myeloid and monocytic leukemias presenting in extramedullary tissues as well as the newly codified blastic plas

In clinical practice neoplasms of female urethra are found usually in adult women. They can also be found in adolescent girls and as rare congenital abnormality. Those conditions are most frequently detected during gynecological or urological examination. Symptoms are few. Lesions are situated at the outer orifice of urethra at the broad basis. Authors have diagnosed and treated 331 patients between 26 and 87 years. Electro coagulation has been performed in 185 patients. Surgical excision has been performed in 41 patients. Excision with following electrocoagulation has been performed in 18 pat

Thymic epithelial neoplasms are uncommon lesions. Affected patients may be asymptomatic or may present with thoracic complaints or paraneoplastic syndromes. Asymptomatic lesions may be discovered incidentally during chest radiography or during other chest imaging studies. This article addresses the imaging evaluation of patients who have thymic epithelial neoplasms, specifically covering the use of chest radiography, CT, MRI, and positron emission tomography.

In the period of 20 years, the author had an opportunity to observe 14 cases of endothelial neoplasms of the lungs. The group consisted of eight women and six men, differing in age from 18 to 75 years. These cases presented as two subsets: low grade malignancy epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (PEH) (12 cases--eight women and four men, aged between 18 and 75 years) and highly malignant endotheliosarcoma seen in two men, 28 and 47 years old. The patients with epithelioid hemangioendothelioma reported to hospitals mainly because routine chest X-ray examinations accidentally revealed nodular lesio

INTRODUCTION: Neoplastic changes represent an important part of cystic deposits in pancreas. It is morphologically non-homogenous group of neoplasms with different occurrence depending on sex and age, different localization and different biologic properties. The aim of the paper is to remind current knowledge of this topic and confront it with our own experience.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Together 13 patients with histologically proved cystic neoplasm of pancreas underwent surgery during the period of ten years from 1997 to 2007. They represent 6% of all patients operated for pancreatic tumor (21

Salivary gland epithelial neoplasms in children are rare. Clinicians of all disciplines need to have a high level of suspicion when a non-inflammatory single mass lesion presents in the parotid or submandibular glands. There is high likelihood of malignancy when such a mass presents. Surgery is the primary treatment of choice in the majority of cases, with the addition of adjuvant radiotherapy +/- chemotherapy when the diagnosis is a high-grade tumour and/or when the malignancy presents as a large mass or is associated with local tissue invasion. Minor salivary gland neoplasms also present, th

A cytologic diagnosis of thymoma is extremely challenging. In part, this is because the tumor is uncommon and aspirates are infrequently encountered, a technically proficient interventional radiologist is needed, epithelial cells may be difficult to recognize in lymphoid rich aspirate smears, and there is inherent sampling error in a tumor that frequently displays heterogeneous histopathology. Critical to the cytologic diagnosis of most WHO Type B thymomas is the recognition of a distinct population of epithelial cells mixed with lymphocytes. This is more easily accomplished using Papanicolaou

Advances in our understanding of renal neoplasia have resulted in recognition of numerous tumors that are composed predominantly of cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. This article discusses the features of renal oncocytoma (including oncocytosis), chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and clear cell RCC; explores the relationship between renal oncocytoma and chromophobe RCC; briefly discusses other tumors with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm; and emphasizes the differential diagnosis of such tumors.
