Squamous cell carcinoma of the maxilla in a patient with basal cell nevus syndrome.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. This syndrome is characterized by developmental anomalies, such as odontogenic keratocysts of the jaws, multiple basal cell carcinomas, and skeletal abnormalities. Various neoplasms or hamartomas were observed in association with BCNS.We report on a 45-year-old female patient who presented with a tumefaction of the right maxillary region. After correlating clinical, radiographic, and histological features, diagnosis of BCNS associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the ri

Infundibulocystic Structures and Prominent Squamous Metaplasia in Sebaceoma-A Rare Feature. A Clinicopathologic Study of 10 Cases.

The authors describe 10 cases of sebaceoma that manifested prominent infundibulocystic structures in all cases and, additionally, conspicuous squamous metaplasia in 6 neoplasms. All tumors occurred on the scalp or the face (2 cases lacked clinical information) and presented as a solitary lesion, measuring from 5 to 20 mm. The patients' age ranged from 22 to 89 years. The main component of all tumors was small, uniform basaloid cells (immature sebocytes) intermixed with mature sebocytes clearly arranged in nodules, classifying the lesions as a sebaceoma. In all neoplasms, the tumor cells showed

Primary combined neuroendocrine and squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: report of a case with immunohistochemical and molecular characterization.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms represent a rare subset of tumors in the sinonasal tract. Combined tumors, with an endocrine and a non-neuroendocrine component, are exceedingly rare, and mainly consist of a combination of neuroendocrine carcinoma with adenocarcinomas. We present the clinico-pathologic and immunohistochemical features of a neuroendocrine carcinoma combined with squamous cell carcinoma, arising in the maxillary sinus. In addition, we evaluated the clonal origin of the two components through analysis of TP53 gene status. Both components were positive for cytokeratins AE1/AE3, while the

Case report: Quadruple primary malignant neoplasms including esophageal, ureteral, and lung in an elderly male.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs) are defined as multiple tumors with different pathogenic origins. MPMNs are rare, but the morbidity rate is on the rise. With the development of anti-tumor treatments, such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy, the overall survival of cancer patients has been significantly prolonged, leading to an increased number of patients with MPMNs. A crucial aspect of MPMNs management is deciding how to schedule further treatments according to individual tumor risk. This process involves a multidisciplinary physician team to ensure favorable outcomes. Herein

Infiltrating neoplasms of the kidney.

Some neoplastic processes which involve the kidney develop not as a distinct localized mass, but rather as an infiltrating process which replaces the renal parenchyma, causes little or no mass effect, and contains little if any neovascularity. These neoplasms include (1) carcinoma of the renal pelvis when it invades the parenchyma (transitional cell and squamous cell); (2) blood-borne metastatic squamous cell carcinoma to the kidney (most frequently from the lung): (3) renal lymphoma of the infiltrating variety; and (4) infiltrating sarcomatous type of hypernephroma. While the urographic and a

Spontaneous neoplasms in aged Sprague-Dawley rats.

Incidence of neoplastic lesions in untreated Sprague-Dawley rats (1340 males and 1329 females) used as controls in 17 carcinogenicity studies are tabulated and evaluated. In male rats, the most common neoplasms were benign pheochromocytomas and keratoacanthomas (4.0% in each case) followed by pancreatic islet cell adenomas (3.7%), thyroid parafollicular cell adenomas (3.6%), fibromas and squamous cell papillomas of the skin and hepatocellular adenomas (2.0% in each), malignant lymphoma lymphocytic (1.9%), histiocytic sarcomas (1.4%), and adrenal cortical adenomas (1.2%). Possible involvement of stem cell factor and endothelin-1 in the emergence of pigmented squamous cell carcinoma in oral mucosa.

We present here the clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical features of a pigmented squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the oral mucosa of the hard palate of a 76-year-old Japanese man. He underwent a partial resection of the maxilla subsequent to radiotherapy. The tumor was typical, moderately well-differentiated SCC but had many melanocytes (melanocytosis) within it. Immunohistochemical analysis for stem cell factor (SCF) and endothelin-1, both of which are known to stimulate proliferation and differentiation of melanocytes, revealed prominent expression of both factors in the neoplasti

Epithelioma of the fourth ventricle in a goat.

We describe an epithelial neoplasm arising from the fourth ventricle of a goat and extending into the subjacent cerebellum along the spaces of Virchow-Robin. The neoplastic cells are consistent with squamous epithelium based upon light microscopic morphology and cytokeratin immunoreactivity. The lack of overt keratin formation and the lack of an exophytic component distinguishes this neoplasm from intracranial epidermoid cysts, resulting in the classification of this caprine tumor as an epithelioma.

Skin collision tumour and dermoscopic diagnosis of melanoma in situ and dilated pore of Winer.

Collision tumours are a random association of two or more neoplasms arising in the same anatomical site. Dilated pore of Winer (DPW) - an adnexal tumour of pilar origin - has been described in collisions with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and trichoblastoma. We present a literature review of melanoma-associated skin lesions and describe the first collision of a DPW with a melanoma in situ (MIS) and the sequential dermoscopic examination for diagnosis.

Trabecular (Merkel cell) carcinoma arising in the wall of an epidermal cyst.

A trabecular (Merkel cell) carcinoma arising in the wall of an epidermal cyst in a 58-year-old white male metastasized, 17 months after local excision, to an inguinal lymph node. Ultrastructural studies showed polygonal tumor cells with typical dense-core granules. Although squamous-cell carcinoma and other malignant neoplasms have been reported rarely to have arisen in epidermal cysts, a literature search failed to find a precedent for the present case.

Spontaneous oronasal ejection of neoplastic and non-neoplastic nodules by 21 dogs, 2000-2024.

Spontaneous ejection of tissues from body orifices is rare in veterinary medicine. Here we underscore the diagnostic value of tissues spontaneously ejected from the nose or mouth of 21 dogs and submitted for histologic evaluation at 3 veterinary diagnostic institutions. Cases were retrospectively searched (2000-2024) from the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory, and Antech Diagnostics web-based archive systems. Affected dogs were adults (x̄ age = 9.5 y) of several breeds. There were 13 male (8 castrated, 5 intact) and 8 spayed fe

Role of p40 and cytokeratin 5/6 in the differential diagnosis of sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an epithelial neoplasm of sinonasal region which does not exhibit a squamous or glandular differentiation. The challenge in diagnosis of this entity is the rarity of the disease, the varying morphology of the tumor which leads to gamut of differential diagnosis and the paucity of consistent immunohistochemical markers except pancytokeratin. Forty-one cases of sinonasal epithelial neoplasm consisting of 11 cases of SNUC and 10 cases each of high-grade (grade 3 and 4) esthesioneuroblastoma, undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and poorly diffe

Mohs micrographic surgery for penoscrotal malignancy.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has been shown to reduce recurrence rates when used to excise many different mucocutaneous neoplasms, especially of the head and neck. The low recurrence rates are due to careful microscopic evaluation of the horizontal and vertical surgical margins. This article discusses the utility and limitations of MMS in controlling neoplasia of the male genitalia. Specific penoscrotal neoplasias discussed in this article include invasive and in situ squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget disease, and granular cell tumor.

Morphology of neoplastic lesions in the clitoral and prepucial gland of the F334 rat.

Three hundred fifty-nine neoplasms of the prepucial and clitoral glands of F344 rats were reviewed to classify the different types of tumors in relation to the normal anatomy and histology of the glands. Most tumors originated from the acinar of ductal cells, while only one tumor could be found originating from the mesenchymal tissue. They were classified as adenomas, adenocarcinomas, papillomas, squamous cell or basal cell carcinomas, and mixed cell carcinomas with different structural formations. Only one tumor metastasized to the lung.

Bilateral ovarian mature cystic teratoma with unilateral malignant transformation to adenocarcinoma: A case report.

Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is the most common germ cell tumor of the ovary, comprising 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. Malignant transformation (MT) is an uncommon complication and occurs in approximately 1-3% of all MCTs. The most common histological type of MT is squamous cell carcinoma. Other rare transformations include - carcinoid tumors, melanoma, adenocarcinoma, and sarcoma. We present one such rare case of bilateral MCT with unilateral MT into mucinous adenocarcinoma of intestinal type.

Karyotypic findings in tumors of the vulva and vagina.

Neoplasms of the vulva and vagina together account for less than 5% of all female genital tract cancers, and very few cases have been analyzed using chromosome banding techniques. We report the karyotypic findings in a consecutive series of ten tumors of the vulva and vagina; in addition to five squamous cell carcinomas of the vulva, we present the first cytogenetic analysis of two malignant melanomas and a Paget disease of the vulva, as well as an adenocarcinoma and a squamous cell hyperplasia of the vagina. Binocular Diplopia: An Unusual Presentation of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung.

Here, we discuss the case of a 72-year-old male with a known history of COPD who presented with one month of binocular diplopia and headache. The initial clinical investigation discovered destructive intraosseous lesions within the sellar and para-sellar (SPS) regions, suggesting primary versus metastatic intracranial lesions. Further examination revealed a mass in the right lung, with subsequent biopsy confirming squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung as the primary site of malignancy. The SPS regions of the basicranium, while well-documented to be associated with various primary neoplasms

[Porokeratosis palmaris et plantaris disseminata with squamous cell carcinoma].

A 53-year-old man presented porokeratosis palmaris, plantaris et disseminata with some features (exacerbation of lesions, in the sun light, zosteriform fashion of them on the trunk and extremities) distinctive of other variants of porokeratosis. Lately, four squamous cell carcinomas had arisen on the areas involved by disease. Histologic study of porokeratosis lesions showed epidermal changes typical of the disease ("cornoid lamella"), but also a mild disorder of malpighian stratification. Neoplasms were removed surgically and the patient was given etretinate orally (75 mg/day for a week, 50 m

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive neoplasm of the paranasal sinuses. Approximately 40 cases of this neoplasm have been reported to date. Microscopically, this neoplasm is composed of medium-sized cohesive cells arranged in nests, ribbons, and trabeculae having hyperchromatic nuclei, often with prominent nucleoli. A high mitotic rate, tumor necrosis, and prominent vascular invasion are conspicuous features. Squamous or glandular differentiation is not observed at the light-microscopic level. It appears to be a unique, distinctive clinicopathologic process that mu
