Neuroimaging features of spontaneous intracranial hypotension.

We reviewed the cranial MRI and radionuclide cisternograms of four adults with postural headache indicating spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). All four underwent clinical and radiological follow-up. MRI showed diffuse, thin meningeal enhancement; bilateral subdural fluid collections; and morphological abnormalities secondary to "sagging" of the brain. Radionuclide cisternography revealed direct or indirect signs of leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) along the spinal axis, and the symptoms resolved after the leak treated by epidural injection of blood at a level indicated by the cist

Computational neuroimaging of human visual cortex.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging is a new neuroimaging method for probing the intact, alert, human brain. With this tool, brain activity that has been hidden can now be measured. Recent advances in measuring and understanding human neural responses underlying motion, color, and pattern perception are reviewed. In individual human brain, we can now identify the positions of several retinotopically organized visual areas; measure retinotopic organization within these areas; identify the location of a motion-sensitive region in individual brains; measure responses associated with contrast, c

Neuroimaging abnormalities with hypoglossal nerve palsies.

Seven patients with acute or chronic unilateral hypoglossal nerve lesions were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. In patients with acute to subacute tongue paralysis, the base of the ipsilateral side of the tongue appeared expanded and showed increased signal intensity on T2-weighted images. This appearance was suggestive of an infiltrative mass lesion within the tongue. These radiographic findings are due to the pathophysiological process of nerve injury and muscle denervation.

Supratentorial ependymomas. Neuroimaging and clinicopathological correlation.

In 10 patients with supratentorial ependymomas, the tumors exhibited hyperdensity on computerized tomography (CT) scanning prior to contrast infusion and, with one exception, all tumors were mixed lesions with the low densities suggesting cystic or necrotic portions. Eighty percent of the tumors contained small calcifications. Characteristically, the tumors were well demarcated and demonstrated moderate to marked enhancement after the intravenous administration of contrast material. Angiograms obtained in some patients showed mild hypervascular tumor staining and absence of large feeding arter

Cerebrovascular regulation dynamics and Alzheimer's neuroimaging phenotypes.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrovascular dysfunction may contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. We examined how novel cerebral hemodynamic markers relate to neuroimaging phenotypes associated with AD dementia in cognitively impaired and unimpaired older adults. METHODS: Statistical hemodynamic indices were computed for each participant from stochastic dynamic models relating resting-state spontaneous arterial blood pressure and end-tidal CO2 fluctuations to transcranial doppler-derived blood velocity and near infrared spectroscopy-derived cortical tissue oxygenation. Linear regressions rel

Neuroimaging spectrum of GATOR1-related epilepsy (GATORopathies).

BACKGROUND: The mTOR pathway is important for neurodevelopment. The GATOR1 complex, composed of DEPDC5, NPRL2, and NPRL3, functions as a negative regulator of mTORC1 activity and pathogenic variants in the genes which comprise this complex cause focal epilepsy and malformation of cortical development, all named as GATORopathies. While focal cortical dysplasia is commonly reported, the full spectrum of associated neuroimaging findings remains incompletely defined. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the neuroimaging features associated with GATOR1 complex mutations and to explore potential associations

Longitudinal Multimodal Neuroimaging After Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of long-term cognitive impairment, yet the mechanisms underlying recovery remain poorly understood. Neuroimaging methods such as diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) provide insight into micro- and macro-scale changes post-traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the relationships between regional cellular and functional alterations remain unclear. In this exploratory study, we conducted a longitudinal, multimodal neuroimaging analysis quantifying TBI-related pathologies in four biomarkers, na

Brain alteration of PCOS: neuroimaging and function.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder affecting women, continues to be inadequately understood in terms of its pathogenesis. However, it is strongly associated with structural and functional abnormalities in the brain. This review examines neuroimaging alterations and cerebral functional changes observed in patients with PCOS, investigating their relationships with endocrine-metabolic profiles, behavioral patterns, cognitive performance, and emotional regulation. Neuroimaging studies have identified several key findings, including the enlargement of the pituitary gland

Neuroimaging in Children With Inherited Metabolic Epilepsies.

Inherited metabolic epilepsies (IMEs) represent inherited metabolic disorders in which seizures, various in types and typically intractable, are one of the predominant manifestations and primary determinants of the overall outcome. A metabolic etiology should be suspected in any case of refractory seizures stemming from an undetermined cause. While the occurrence rate of individual IMEs is rare, their cumulative prevalence is high enough to pose a significant clinical challenge. Concurrently with genetic and metabolic tests, neuroimaging is considered part of the first tier of their investigat

Developing Clinically Interpretable Neuroimaging Biotypes in Psychiatry.

Despite available treatments, major depressive disorder (MDD) remains one of the leading causes of disability across medical conditions. The current symptom-based diagnostic system groups patients with highly heterogeneous presentations, with no biomarkers to guide treatment, akin to diagnosing heart disease solely by chest pain without imaging to reveal the underlying pathology. Lacking biological guidance, clinicians rely on trial-and-error prescribing. Only 33% of individuals with MDD achieve remission in response to initial treatments, and most cycle through multiple treatments over an ave

Advances in semantic dementia: Neuropsychology, pathology & neuroimaging.

Semantic dementia is a kind of neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by prominent semantic impairments and anterior temporal lobe atrophy. Since 2010, more studies have devoted to this rare disorder, revealing that it is more complex than we think. Clinical advances include more specific findings of semantic impairments and other higher order cognitive deficits. Neuroimaging techniques can help revealing the different brain networks affected (both structurally and functionally) in this condition. Pathological and genetic studies have also found more complex situations of semantic dementia,

Evaluating migraine with typical aura with neuroimaging.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an up-to-date narrative literature review of imaging in migraine with typical aura, as a means to understand better migraine subtypes and aura biology. BACKGROUND: Characterizing subtypes of migraine with typical aura and appreciating possible biological differences between migraine with and without aura, are important to understanding the neurobiology of aura and trying to advance personalized therapeutics in this area through imaging biomarkers. One means of doing this over recent years has been the use of increasingly advanced neuroimaging techniques. METHODS: We con

Tensor response quantile regression with neuroimaging data.

Collecting neuroimaging data in the form of tensors (i.e. multidimensional arrays) has become more common in mental health studies, driven by an increasing interest in studying the associations between neuroimaging phenotypes and clinical disease manifestation. Motivated by a neuroimaging study of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the Grady Trauma Project, we study a tensor response quantile regression framework, which enables novel analyses that confer a detailed view of the potentially heterogeneous association between a neuroimaging phenotype and relevant clinical predictors. Neuroimaging During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period.

New onset or exacerbation of preexisting neurologic symptoms during pregnancy often necessitates brain or spinal cord imaging. Magnetic resonance techniques are preferred imaging modalities during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Ionizing radiation with computed tomography and intravenous contrast material with magnetic resonance or computed tomography should be avoided during pregnancy. New onset of headaches in the last trimester or in the postpartum period may indicate cerebrovascular disease or a mass lesion, for which brain imaging is necessary. The continuum of cerebrovascular compli
