Nitrogen gas-bubble disease in two giant salamanders.

Gas-bubble disease (GBD)-a non-infectious disease in aquatic organisms caused by supersaturated levels of total dissolved gases (oxygen and nitrogen) in water-is well known in various species, including fish and amphibians, but has not previously been reported in giant salamanders. In the present study, macroscopic and histopathological examinations of 2 mature Andrias spp. (kept with 293 fish in an aquarium) were performed to characterize GBD pathology. Bubbles developed on the body surfaces of the salamanders and fish, with erythema specifically noted in the salamanders. Within 3 d of the bu

Atmospheric reduced nitrogen: Sources, transformations, effects, and management.

Human activities have increased atmospheric emissions and deposition of oxidized and reduced forms of nitrogen, but emission control programs have largely focused on oxidized nitrogen. As a result, in many regions of the world emissions of oxidized nitrogen are decreasing while emissions of reduced nitrogen are increasing. Emissions of reduced nitrogen largely originate from livestock waste and fertilizer application, with contributions from transportation sources in urban areas. Observations suggest a discrepancy between trends in emissions and deposition of reduced nitrogen in the U.S., like

Catalytic Properties of High Nitrogen Content Carbonaceous Materials.

The influence of structural modifications on the catalytic activity of carbon materials is poorly understood. A collection of carbonaceous materials with different pore networks and high nitrogen content was characterized and used to catalyze four reactions to deduce structure-activity relationships. The CO2 cycloaddition and Knoevenagel reaction depend on Lewis basic sites (electron-rich nitrogen species). The absence of large conjugated carbon domains resulting from the introduction of large amounts of nitrogen in the carbon network is responsible for poor redox activity, as observed through

Chemiluminescence Measurement of Reactive Sulfur and Nitrogen Species.

Significance: Reactive sulfur and nitrogen species such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO•) are ubiquitous cellular signaling molecules that play central roles in physiology and pathophysiology. A deeper understanding of these signaling pathways will offer new opportunities for therapeutic treatments and disease management. Recent Advances: Chemiluminescence methods have been fundamental in detecting and measuring biological reactive sulfur and nitrogen species, and new approaches are emerging for imaging these analytes in living intact specimens. Ozone-based and luminol-based che

Nitrogen Catabolite Repression in members of Paracoccidioides complex.

Paracoccidioides complex is a genus that comprises pathogenic fungi which are responsible by systemic disease Paracoccidioidomycosis. In host tissues, pathogenic fungi need to acquire nutrients in order to survive, making the uptake of nitrogen essential for their establishment and dissemination. Nitrogen utilization is employed by the alleviation of Nitrogen Catabolite Repression (NCR) which ensures the use of non-preferential or alternative nitrogen sources when preferential sources are not available. NCR is controlled by GATA transcription factors which act through GATA binding sites on pro

Coordination of non-innocent nitrogen oxide ligands: terminology.

Many nitrogen oxides have long been referred to by their common names rather than by IUPAC recommended nomenclature. This practice has expanded with the discovery that nitrogen oxides serve as biological signaling agents. This commentary addresses the recent introduction of a new term for metal nitrosyl complexes upon reduction and suggests a community-based approach to changes in nomenclature rather than through spontaneous introduction in the literature.

Synthesis of Nitrogen Heterocycles Using Samarium(II) Iodide.

Nitrogen heterocycles represent vital structural motifs in biologically-active natural products and pharmaceuticals. As a result, the development of new, convenient and more efficient processes to N-heterocycles is of great interest to synthetic chemists. Samarium(II) iodide (SmI₂, Kagan's reagent) has been widely used to forge challenging C-C bonds through reductive coupling reactions. Historically, the use of SmI₂ in organic synthesis has been focused on the construction of carbocycles and oxygen-containing motifs. Recently, significant advances have taken place in the use of SmI₂ for the sy

Heat-induced formation of nitrogen oxides in water.

It was found by the fluorimetric method using 2,3-diaminonaphthalene that moderate heating of water (60-80°C, for up to 4 h) leads to the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen with the formation of nitrite. The kinetic parameters of this process were determined. The energy of activation of [Formula: see text]formation was estimated to be 139 kJ/mol. It was found that the amount of nitrite formed depends on the concentration of dissolved oxygen and nitrogen. It was shown by two independent methods (Griess reagent/VCl3 and 2,3-diaminonaphthalene/nitrate reductase) that heating of water (80°C, 1 h) re

Evaporated liquid nitrogen-induced asphyxia: a case report.

A 27-yr-old postgraduate student was found lying at the floor of an unsealed underground dry area, where a valve-opened empty cylinder of liquid nitrogen (150 L) was connected to a cap-removed empty Dewar-flask (10 L) via a copper infusion tube. No injury was found externally or internally. There were petechiae in the bilateral conjunctivae and periorbital skin. The dry area, measuring 300 x 130 x 260 cm, had a communication to the basement of the research building by a window measuring 90 x 60 cm in size at 130 cm above the floor. The scene reconstruction and atmosphere gas analysis revealed

Tissue injury by hot fluid containing nitrogen mustard.

Nitrogen mustards are analogous to sulfur mustard and have similar toxic effects on tissues. With the recent surge in terror activity, mustard could be used by terrorists. Recently a group of patients suffered from skin injury caused by hot fluid containing nitrogen mustard were treated. All the patients displayed eye symptoms such as eye pain, photophobia, excessive tearing, and blurred vision. One patient suffered from severe inhalation injury. Laboratory examination showed the decrease of white blood cell count, which may result from the loss of neutrophils. At the same time, platelets were

Nitrogen dioxide (silo gas) poisoning in dairy cattle.

Toxic silo gases are a potential danger to livestock housed in close proximity to roughage silos. These gases, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), may be produced during the early stages of (maize and grass) silage making. In humans, inhalation of these gases causes a condition known as 'Silo Filler's Disease' (SFD), which is a recognized occupational hazard for workers in upright forage silos in many countries. NO2 accumulates on top of silage, is inhaled by workers, and reacts with water on the airway surfaces to form nitrous acid, which damages the lung and causes pulmonary oedema, bronchioliti

Management with topical nitrogen mustard in mycosis fungoides.

Topical nitrogen mustard (mechlorethamine, NM) has been used as primary therapy for management of patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) since the 1950s. Many investigators have demonstrated the efficacy of topical NM in patch and/or plaque disease of MF. Updated results from Stanford also confirm the clinical efficacy. The complete response (CR) rates reported are 76-80% for patients with limited patch/plaque (stage IA), and 35-68% for those with generalized patch/plaque (stage IB) disease. Topical NM can be used as an aqueous (water) or ointment-based preparation. The efficacy results are simi

Nitrogen oxide-induced autoprotection in isolated rat hepatocytes.

Pretreatment of rat hepatocytes with low-dose nitrogen oxide (addition of SNAP in vitro or induction of nitric oxide synthase in vitro or in vivo) imparts resistance to killing and decrease in aconitase and mitochondrial electron transfer from a second exposure to a higher dose of SNAP. Induction of this resistance is prevented by cycloheximide, indicating upregulation of protective protein(s). Ferritin levels are increased as are non-heme iron-NO EPR signals. Tin-protoporphyrin (SnPP) prevents protection, suggesting involvement of hsp32 (heme oxygenase) and/or guanylyl cyclase (GC). Cross-res

Regulation of nitrogen catabolic enzymes in Streptomyces clavuligerus.

The levels of several enzymes involved in assimilation of different nitrogen compounds were investigated in Streptomyces clavuligerus in relation to the nitrogen source supplied to the cultures. Threonine dehydratase, serine dehydratase, proline dehydrogenase, histidase and urocanase were not decreased in the presence of ammonium. The latter two enzymes were induced by histidine in the culture medium, while proline dehydrogenase was induced by proline. Glutamine synthetase, urease and ornithine aminotransferase levels were higher with poor nitrogen sources and were repressed by ammonium. Argin

Egg and breast milk based nitrogen sources compared.

A nitrogen source based on egg protein (Vamin 9 glucose) and an alternative with an amino acid profile more similar to breast milk (Vaminolact), were compared in 14 parenterally fed infants. Subjects were randomly allocated to receive one or other amino acid solution, but were otherwise given identical diets. At the start of the study the two groups did not differ significantly in postconceptual age, postnatal age, or weight. Over a six day study period on a stable intake of intravenous nutrients there was no significant difference in growth or nitrogen retention between the two groups. Plasma
