Raphe nuclei echogenicity changes in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Background: Dysregulation of serotonin system is hypothesized to play the main role in the etiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Transcranial sonography (TCS) is a helpful noninvasive and low-cost tool for the assessment of subcortical brain architectures, mainly basal nuclei, cerebellar central structures, and midbrain. In this study, an ultrasound assessment was performed for a sample of the patients with OCD and healthy control group to evaluate echogenicity of midbrain raphe nuclei (RN). Methods: A total of 35 patients with OCD and 35 healthy controls of similar age and sex ente

Inductive and deductive reasoning in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study examined the hypothesis that participants diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show a selective deficit in inductive reasoning but are equivalent to controls in deductive reasoning. METHODS: Twenty-five participants with OCD and 25 non-clinical controls made inductive and deductive judgments about a common set of arguments that varied in logical validity and the amount of positive evidence provided (premise sample size). A second inductive reasoning task required participants to make forced-choice decisions and rate the usefulness of diverse

Gamma Ventral Capsulotomy in Intractable Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Despite the development of effective pharmacologic and cognitive behavioral treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), some patients continue to be treatment-refractory and severely impaired. Fiber tracts connecting orbitofrontal and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex with subcortical nuclei have been the target of neurosurgical lesions as well as deep brain stimulation in these patients. We report on the safety and efficacy of ventral gamma capsulotomy for patients with intractable OCD. METHODS: Fifty-five patients with severely disabling, treatment-refractory OCD received

Tibia stress fracture secondary to obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Early-onset OCD is one of the most common mental illnesses of children and adolescents, with a prevalence of 1% to 3%. It is related to worse lifespan symptoms and prognosis. Therefore, the treatment of OCD in children and adolescent has gained importance. If it is not treated successfully, the compulsive behaviors may cause extreme stress for children and their parents. Although minor complications of OCD are commonly observed, major complications are considerably rare due to the

Characterization of SLITRK1 variation in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a syndrome characterized by recurrent and intrusive thoughts and ritualistic behaviors or mental acts that a person feels compelled to perform. Twin studies, family studies, and segregation analyses provide compelling evidence that OCD has a strong genetic component. The SLITRK1 gene encodes a developmentally regulated stimulator of neurite outgrowth and previous studies have implicated rare variants in this gene in disorders in the OC spectrum, specifically Tourette syndrome (TS) and trichotillomania (TTM). The objective of the current study was to evalu

Obsessive compulsive disorder and psychopathic behaviour in Babylon.

BACKGROUND: The history of obsessive compulsive, phobic and psychopathic behaviour can be traced to the 17th century AD. METHODS AND RESULTS: We draw attention to these behaviours in a Babylonian cuneiform medical text known as Shurpu. These three categories were united in the Babylonian mind around the concept of the māmīt 'oath' idea, the behaviour habits being so unbreakable it appeared that the subject had sworn an oath to do or not to do the action involved. The behavioural accounts were entirely objective, including what we would call immature, antisocial and criminal behaviour, and obs

Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder symptoms in college students.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the occurrence of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs) and associated symptomology in college students. PARTICIPANTS: Participants included 358 undergraduate students. RESULTS: Results suggest that clinically significant levels of OCSD symptoms are relatively common. Additionally, OCSD symptoms co-occurred with each other and anxiety symptoms in general, yet not significantly with impulsivity symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Given their prevalence in college students and potentially debilitating nature, it is important to increase awareness of OCSDs so th

[A new explanatory model for obsessive-compulsive disorder].

BACKGROUND: Ever since the first descriptions of obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd) there have been discussions about how the phenomenology of the disorder should be understood. Over the past 50 years the main emphasis has been on the phobic elements of ocd. A new psychological model, called the Inference Based Approach (iba), focuses on an underexposed aspect of the disorder, namely the strange convictions of the patient. AIM: To compare the new model with the existing cognitive behavioral theories of ocd. METHOD: Literature research was conducted using Medline. RESULTS: According to the

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: subclassification based on co-morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is probably an etiologically heterogeneous condition. Many patients manifest other psychiatric syndromes. This study investigated the relationship between OCD and co-morbid conditions to identify subtypes. METHOD: Seven hundred and six individuals with OCD were assessed in the OCD Collaborative Genetics Study (OCGS). Multi-level latent class analysis was conducted based on the presence of eight co-morbid psychiatric conditions [generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), major depression, panic disorder (PD), separation anxiety disorder (SAD), tics, man

Obsessive-compulsive disorder spectrum as a scientific "metaphor".

As a result of clinical, epidemiological, neuroimaging, and therapy studies that took place in the late 1980s, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been well-characterized in the field of anxiety disorders. Other disorders attracted attention for their similarities to OCD, and were located in the orbit of the disorder. OCD has become known as the "primary domain" of a scientific "metaphor" comprising the putative cluster of OCD-related disorders (OCRDs). It is a "paradigm" with which to explore basal ganglia dysfunction. The OCRDs share common phenomenology, comorbidities, lifetime course,

Responsibility and obsessive-compulsive disorder: an experimental test.

To test the causal status of responsibility in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), an experiment was executed in which responsibility was experimentally manipulated. OCD patients, non-OCD anxiety controls, and non-patients executed a classification task in either a high or a low responsibility (LoRes) condition. Subjective ratings related to danger and responsibility indicated that the manipulation was successful. Subjective OCD-like experiences and checking behaviors were higher in OCD patients in the high responsibility (HiRes) condition than in all other groups. Although the checking subsc

Strategy implementation in obsessive-compulsive disorder and trichotillomania.

BACKGROUND: The use of strategies to aid performance when undertaking neuropsychological tasks is dependent on intact fronto-striatal circuitry, and growing evidence suggests impaired spontaneous use of strategies in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, studies to date have not examined the effects of strategy training on task performance in OCD or in trichotillomania (compulsive hair-pulling, a condition that has been argued to share overlap with OCD in terms of phenomenology and co-morbidity). METHOD: The ability to generate novel visuospatial sequences using a comput

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in patients with panic disorder.

Comorbidity studies have shown an important association between panic disorder (PD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and OCD in patients with PD. Forty-eight consecutive PD cases (DSM-IV diagnostic criteria) referred to a Brazilian university hospital clinic were studied. The Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive scale (Y-BOCS) checklist was used to identify the OCS. Subclinical OCD was considered when subjects met all but one DSM-IV criteria for OCD (symptoms did not cause significant distress

Family approaches to treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder.

This article reviews the family constellation of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), the presence of OCD symptoms among family members, and familial aspects including parental attachment, expressed emotion (EE), and family accommodation. Some evidence supports a negative effect of hostility, emotional over-involvement, and criticism perceived by the patient on behavioral treatment outcome. However, actual criticism observed by the relative during an interview was associated with more benefit from therapy. Family accommodation predicted poorer family functioning and more severe O

Memory and memory confidence in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Pathological doubt, often found in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), has been theoretically linked to memory deficits, but empirical evidence for such deficits has been mixed. In contrast, many studies suggest that individuals with OCD have low confidence in their memories. The present study aimed to build upon previous research by measuring memory accuracy and confidence in OCD using ecologically valid, idiographically-selected stimuli. Individuals with OCD (OCs), anxious controls (ACs), and nonanxious controls (NACs) were exposed to a set of objects that the OCs had ident

Possible role of neuropeptides in obsessive compulsive disorder.

The most consistent finding in clinical research of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is the significant treatment advantage of potent serotonin uptake inhibitors (SUIs) over other classes of antidepressant and antianxiety drugs. Clinical neurobiological studies of OCD, however, have yielded limited and inconsistent evidence for significant fundamental abnormalities in monoamine systems including serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Furthermore, one-third to one-half of OCD patients do not experience a clinically meaningful improvement with SUI treatment. Investigation beyond the monoamin

Whole blood serotonin in juvenile obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Whole blood serotonin (5-HT) concentration was assessed in 16 children and adolescents with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and in 14 normal adolescent controls. There was no difference in blood 5-HT content between the OCD patients and the normal controls. However, the OCD patients with a family history of OCD had significantly higher blood 5-HT levels than did either the OCD patients without a family history of OCD or the normal controls. Blood 5-HT content was not associated with a history of major depressive disorder or chronic tic disorder. These preliminary results suggest tha
