OBJECTIVE: Sporadic reports have occurred on adverse health effects due to occupational exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides. We report a case of coagulation derangement in a pest-control officer and present the results of a survey of his colleagues.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 48-year-old man worked as a part-time pest-control officer applying rodenticides 3 h a week using gloves, but no mask, and without washing his hands between applications. He developed a symptomatic coagulation disturbance, probably caused by absorption of the poisons during work. No signs of coagulopathy were found in the

39 years old man with granulomatous lesions in both lungs caused by occupational contact with glass fibers was described. He has been working as an bricklayer-plasterer for 18 years and was in contact with lime, cement, plaster, asbestos, dust of coal and wood and with glass fibers. For the last two years before admission in 1993 he has had frequent bronchial infections. On admission he was in good general condition, his spirometric examination and blood gases were within normal limits. On chest x-ray disseminated lesions were found. Those lesions were of the round shapes on chest CT. Many spu

OBJECTIVES: The association between birth weight and exposure to benzene, work stress, and other occupational and environmental hazards was investigated.
METHODS: In a large petrochemical industry, 792 pregnant workers were enrolled and followed up through delivery between May 1996 and December 1998. Exposure to benzene and other solvents was assessed by an industrial hygienist based on each woman's job title and workplace information. Other occupational and environmental exposures and personal information, including perceived work stress, exposure to noise, physical exertion at work, and pas

This review applies health risk assessment methodology to the subject of occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Ultraviolet radiation is produced by many sources, and for most people the sun is their main source of exposure. In the occupational environment, there are also many artificial sources, of which welding arcs are the predominant and most intense. Adverse health effects include photokeratitis, erythema, pterygium, some types of cataract, non-melanocytic skin cancer, and malignant melanoma. Outdoor workers and workers who are exposed to certain artificial sources (particu

Reasons for seeking consultation among health care workers due to potential or supposed risk of HIV infection were analyzed. From August 1990 till July 1996 41 health care providers were consulted including: 22 nurses, 1 student of nursing college, 3 midwives, 4 laboratory workers and 7 physicians (surgeons and gynaecologist). Type of exposure to HIV and applying of safety precautions were evaluated in each case. In 10 cases the offer of postexposure prophylaxis with zidovudine was accepted (6 nurses, 1 student of nursing college, 3 surgeons). Exposure to HIV was described as: needlestick imme

OBJECTIVES: To review the possible association between occupational exposure to dust and ischaemic heart disease (IHD).
METHODS: A literature search was performed of relevant studies regarding IHD in specific exposures to dust. The chosen exposures were arsenic, asbestos, beryllium, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and quartz. The chosen occupations were farmers, paper and paper pulp workers, sawyers, and welders.
DISCUSSION: A theory was launched in 1995 that urban particulate air pollution may provoke alveolar inflammation, with release of mediators capable of increasing blood coagu

Results of chemical analysis, animal experiments, and human studies are reviewed, criticized, and found not to support claims of an association between workers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and occupational coronary heart disease. This review also recommends refinement of the use of dose surrogates, as presently practiced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for regulating indoor emissions from combustion engines, coal furnaces, tobacco leaf processing, rayon viscose manufacturing, and rubber curing. The work standards OSHA uses for regulation of these co

An occupational interstitial pulmonary disease was observed in a 59-year-old workman after five years of massive exposure to aerosolized paraffin. Histologic studies of open-lung biopsy showed a lipoid pneumonia characterized by (1) alveolitis involving large lipid-laden macrophages and (2) interstitial fibrosis. Electron microscopy of AMs disclosed features of paraffin-laden cytoplasmic vacuoles. Successive treatments included prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. Despite these treatments and withdrawal from exposure, the pulmonary function became impaired progressively, resulting in restrictive

The possible effects of occupational noise on human pregnancy were examined in a case-control study. The case groups consisted of 284 women with premature deliveries and of 299 women with full-term, low birth weight infants (below the 25th centile), each case having a matched pair. The whole material, all cases and controls included, comprised 1166 women. The percentage of employment in the whole material was 77.8; there were no differences between the case women and their controls. Rather few women (N = 26; 3.5%) reported occupational noise (greater than or equal to 81 dB; Leq(A)8h) during th

Clinical examinations and audiograms were conducted in a group of 249 men working in a foundry of the Paris area. Before and after adjustment for age, systolic blood pressure levels were positively associated with the duration of the occupational exposure to a noise greater than 85 dBA: 127.8 mmHg in the non-exposed group, 128.6 mmHg when the exposure lasted less than 10 years, 130.1 mmHg from 10 to 19 years, and 140.1 mmHg over 20 years (p less than 0.001). The odds-ratio of arterial hypertension associated with an occupational exposure over 20 years was 1.6 (p less than 0.05). There was no r

Many anticancer agents have been shown to be mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic in experimental systems and second malignancies are known to be associated with several specific therapeutic treatments. Anticancer agents thus represent a class of occupational carcinogens, the handling of which should involve no unnecessary exposure. The available methodologies to detect possible exposures from ambient air and from biological samples are discussed, and the published data on results are reviewed. Analytical methods are available for the detection of most frequently used anticancer drugs from

Serial chromosome and biochemical studies were carried out in 11 subjects before and during initial occupational exposure to moderate quantities of lead fumes in a storage battery plant. The rate of abnormal metaphases, mostly with chromatid and one-break chromosome aberrations, was approximately doubled after one month of work; it further increased after two months of work; remained in this range up to seven months of exposure; and then tended to decrease somewhat. Blood lead levels increased progressively in the first few months, then reached a steady state. Urinary lead and coproporphyrin l

Few studies have explored the association between occupational metal exposure and prostate cancer (PCa), without considering combined effects and tumor characteristics. The aim is to analyze the potential individual and joint exposure to occupational metals on PCa risk, considering tumor aggressiveness and stage. CAPLIFE is a case-control study that included 464 cases and 428 controls. Lifetime occupational exposure to chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and lead (Pb) was estimated using the Spanish job-exposure matrix (MatEmESp). Metal exposure was defined as: i) ever vs. never exposure; i

OBJECTIVES: Occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica has been suggested by previous studies to increase the risk of kidney-related diseases. This study investigated the association between occupational exposure to crystalline silica and the risk of glomerulonephritis.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study with 2,955,863 Danish workers followed from 1994 to 2015. All cohort members were assigned an annual level of exposure to crystalline silica by linking a job exposure matrix with each individual's work history. We identified cases of glomerulonephritis by ICD-10 codes N00, N01, N02

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF), also known as Ormond's disease, is a rare condition characterized by fibrosis in the retroperitoneal space, affecting structures such as the kidneys, ureters, subrenal portion of the abdominal aorta, and the inferior vena cava. While idiopathic RPF is the most common form, it is crucial to rule out secondary causes, which may include certain medications, neoplasms, infections, surgical interventions, or environmental exposures. Prolonged occupational exposure to asbestos is recognized as a rare yet significant cause of RPF.

BACKGROUND: Some engine exhausts (EEs) have been classified as carcinogens and/or can have hormone-modulating properties that could play a role in prostate cancer development.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations between lifetime occupational exposure to various EEs and prostate cancer risk, overall and for aggressive cancers.
METHODS: In a population-based case-control study conducted in Montreal, Canada, 1,924 incident histologically-confirmed prostate cancer cases (436 aggressive) and 1,989 population controls were recruited. Socio-demographics, lifestyle factors and a detailed occupat

Arsenic and its inorganic compounds affect numerous organs and systemic functions, such as the nervous and hematopoietic systems, liver, kidneys, and skin. Despite a large number of studies on arsenic toxicity, rare reports have investigated the leukopenia incidence in workers exposed to arsenic. In workplaces, the main source of workers' exposure is the contaminated air by the inorganic arsenic in mines, arsenic or copper smelter industries, and chemical factories. Erythropoiesis inhibition is one of the arsenic effects and it is related to regulatory factor GATA-1. This factor is necessary f

BACKGROUND: The association between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer has been questioned given the possible misdiagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma as ovarian cancer.
AIMS: To update a systematic review on ovarian cancer risk in women occupationally exposed to asbestos, exploring the association with the time since first exposure and the duration of exposure.
METHODS: We searched PubMed from 2008 onwards, screened previous systematic reviews, combined standardized mortality ratios (SMR) using random effect models and quantified heterogeneity using the I2 statistic. To assess tumour miscl
