PURPOSE: To investigate the role of a supplemental imaging modality in postoperative assessment of acetabular fractures following open reduction and internal fixation.
METHODS: Postoperative axial computed tomographic (CT) scans were compared with plain radiographs of 20 patients with regard to their sensitivity for detecting articular fracture reduction in terms of gap displacement and step deformity or offset. Three observers independently reviewed the plain radiographs and CT scans at 2 separate time points and categorised the outcome as either anatomical or non-anatomical. The inter-obser

Radiographic and computed tomography features of unilateral intra-articular calcaneal fractures after open reduction and internal fixation were compared with late functional outcomes to identify prognostic factors. Sixty-one of 67 patients treated between 1997 and 2002 could walk painlessly postoperatively (average, 19.7 months). Functional results (Laasonen's criteria) were excellent or good in 92.5%. Factors associated with better functional results were lower age (p = .0227), greater Böhler angle at the time of injury (p < .0001), lower Sanders' grade (p = .0497), increased height of fractu

Eight-seven acetabular fractures in eighty-seven patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation at Vanderbilt University Hospital from 1984 to 1989. Fifty-six were treated by orthopaedic traumatologists. Fifty-six patients returned for long-term follow-up (range 24-80 months, average 43). Harris hip ratings were used to clinically grade the results. Poor results were found in 43%. Eighty-three percent of the patients with poor results had satisfactory surgical reductions with < 3 mm of residual displacement. Factors other than surgical reduction contributed significantly to the poor r

Neglected femoral neck fractures are frequently complicated with nonunion and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The treatment is especially difficult in young adults because arthroplasty is not indicated. Five cases of neglected femoral neck fractures in young patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with pins. The defect of the femoral neck was filled with a block of vascularized iliac bone graft. After at least two years, the fractures were healed without avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The leg-length discrepancy was corrected in all but one case. The pedic

Ten displaced intra-articular fractures of the glenoid fossa were treated with open reduction and internal fixation between 1980 and 1987. Nine patients were available for evaluation at an average of four years (range, two to ten years) after the operation. Eight patients had mild or no symptoms and little or no restriction of the motion of the shoulder. There were no infections or malunions. The only complication was heterotopic ossification in one patient. Radiographic evaluation showed no evidence of traumatic osteoarthrosis in any patient. Open reduction and internal fixation is a useful a

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate demographic and radiographic factors associated with the likelihood of open reduction in pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF).
METHODS: A total of 294 pediatric patients with SCHFs treated operatively between 2016 and 2025 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups: Open reduction (OR, n=128) and closed reduction (CR, n=166). Demographic variables, including age, sex, side of injury, and surgeon experience, were recorded. Radiographic parameters assessed on preoperative anteroposterior and lateral elbow ra

OBJECTIVES: Scaphoid fractures represent the most common type of carpal fracture. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate and compare the therapeutic efficacy of wrist arthroscopy-assisted fixation versus conventional open reduction with fixation for scaphoid fractures.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 159 patients with acute scaphoid fractures. Participants were stratified into two groups: the open reduction with fixation group (underwent open reduction and fixation) and the Arthroscopy group (received wrist arthroscopy-assisted fixation). Comparative analyse

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of primary open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) utilizing the existing dorsal wound for the management of isolated nasal fractures characterized by significant depression and to determine its effectiveness in preventing the need for subsequent nasal revisions. A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent ORIF of nasal bone for isolated compound depressed nasal fractures from January 2018 to January 2024. The primary outcomes included the assessment of clinical and radiographic results postoperatively, focusing on nasal s

Multiple mandibular fractures with condylar involvement are challenging to treat. This article presents a series of steps to simplify the treatment and improve the outcomes in open reduction and internal fixation of multiple mandibular fractures with condylar involvement. Four new elements are identified: three-dimensional printing, model surgery, Kirschner wires to manipulate the segments in condylar fractures, and a top-to-bottom sequence. This algorithm has contributed to streamlining the procedure and improving the outcomes of these challenging fractures. For the same operator, reduction a

CASE: Two pediatric patients with displaced, extra-articular scapula fractures who underwent surgery because of concerns for persistent deformity and decreased function with continued nonoperative management.
CONCLUSION: We advocate careful consideration of all patient factors and treatment options when addressing pediatric scapula fractures. Specific fracture patterns with altered shoulder girdle mechanics may warrant surgical intervention to restore anatomic alignment and stability.

BACKGROUND: Hand fractures can be treated using various operative or nonoperative methods. When an operative technique utilizing fixation is performed, early postoperative mobilization has been advocated. We implemented a protocol involving controlled active exercise in the early postoperative period and analyzed the outcomes.
METHODS: Patients who were diagnosed with proximal phalangeal or metacarpal fractures of the second to fifth digits were included (n=37). Minimally invasive open reduction and internal fixation procedures were performed. At 3 weeks postoperatively, controlled active exe

Background: Although postoperative outcomes of olecranon fractures are relatively favorable, postoperative stiffness of the elbow joint occurs occasionally. We aimed to identify negative prognostic factors for unfavorable outcomes following olecranon fractures. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 100 patients with olecranon fractures and collected data on the conducted procedures, age, fracture condition, postoperative reduced position, and postoperative active range of motion (AROM) of the elbow joint. The primary outcome was the regaining of an AROM of > 130° flexion and < -3

Ankle fractures with a posterior malleolus component are complex injuries. The most commonly used operative methods include indirect reduction via a percutaneous anterior approach and direct reduction via a posterolateral approach. For large posterior malleolus fractures with medial extension, direct reduction via a posteromedial approach is an alternative operative option. The authors hypothesized that fixation of large posterior malleolus fractures via a posteromedial approach results in anatomic reduction and stable plate fixation. From 2008 to 2015, 22 (9.0%) of 244 consecutive operative a

BACKGROUND: The modified Stoppa approach is performed for safe and efficient management of acetabular fractures involving the anterior column. This approach avoids dissection of the inguinal canal, the femoral nerve, and the external iliac vessels as seen in the "second window" of the ilioinguinal approach and has thus been shown to be less invasive than the ilioinguinal approach1. As an intrapelvic approach, it facilitates the management of medial displacement fracture patterns involving the quadrilateral plate and dome impaction that typically occur in the elderly2,3. The reduced morbidity o
