The choroid is the vascular structure nourishing the retinal pigment epithelium and the outer retina and it plays a key role in the homeostasis of the eye both under physiological and pathological conditions. In the last 20 years we have moved from "guessing" what was happening beyond the retinal pigment epithelium to actually visualize structural and functional changes of the choroid in vivo noninvasively. In this review we describe the state of the art of choroidal imaging, focusing on the multiple techniques available in the clinical and research setting including indocyanine green angiogra

Adult-onset xanthogranuloma (AOX) is one of the four rare syndromes collectively referred to as adult xanthogranulomatous disease (AXD). It primarily occurs in the orbit and ocular adnexa and displays distinctive histopathological features, characterized by the infiltration of non-Langerhans-derived foam-like histiocytes and Touton giant cells. The presence of diffuse yellow plaques on the eyelids serves as a highly indicative feature. In this report, we present a compelling case of bilateral periorbital AOX. Initially, the patient received a diagnosis of necrotizing xanthogranuloma (NBX) and

Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic autoimmune neuroinflammatory condition in young adults. It is often accompanied by optic neuritis (ON) and retinal neuro-axonal damage causing visual disturbances. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a sensitive non-invasive method for quantifying intraretinal layer volumes. Recently, OCT not only showed to be a reliable marker for ON-associated damage, but also proved its high prognostic value for functional outcome and disability accrual in patients with MS. Consequently, OCT is discussed as a potential marker for monitoring

Nonglaucomatous cupping is commonly encountered in neuro-ophthalmic practice. However, the progression of clinical and imaging findings over time has not been well described. We present serial fundus photographs and spectral domain optical coherence tomography from a pediatric patient with neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder, which demonstrated progression of both cupping and optic atrophy in the setting of normal intraocular pressure.

Both cavernous angiomas and focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) are well recognized causes of pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Anecdotal cases of FCD adjacent to cavernous angiomas have been documented in the literature. This study systematically reviews a series of cavernous angiomas in epilepsy patients, looking for evidence of coexistent FCD. 146 patients were diagnosed with cavernous angiomas on resection specimens from January 1989 to May 2011; 18 cases also had epilepsy and had ample tissue excised to assess for FCD. FCD was classified according to criteria outlined by Palmini et al. [12]. Patient

A custom-built dynamic-focus swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) system with a central wavelength of 1310 nm was used to image the anterior eye from the cornea to the lens. An electrically tunable lens was utilized to dynamically control the positions of focusing planes over the imaging range of 10 mm. The B-scan images were acquired consecutively at the same position but with different focus settings. The B-scan images were then registered and averaged after filtering the out-of-focus regions using a Gaussian window. By fusing images obtained at different depth focus locations,

Many diseases involve either the formation of new blood vessels (e.g., tumor angiogenesis) or the damage of existing ones (e.g., diabetic retinopathy) at the microcirculation level. Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM), capable of imaging microvessels in 3D in vivo down to individual capillaries using endogenous contrast, has the potential to reveal microvascular information critical to the diagnosis and staging of microcirculation-related diseases. In this study, we have developed a dedicated microvascular quantification (MQ) algorithm for OR-PAM to automatically quantify mult

Imaging with ultrashort exposure times is generally achieved with a crossed-beam geometry. In the usual arrangement, an off-axis gating pulse induces birefringence in a medium exhibiting a strong Kerr response (commonly carbon disulfide) which is followed by a polarizer aligned to fully attenuate the on-axis imaging beam. By properly timing the gate pulse, imaging light experiences a polarization change allowing time-dependent transmission through the polarizer to form an ultrashort image. The crossed-beam system is effective in generating short gate times, however, signal transmission through

IMPORTANCE: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a severe, acquired, potentially life-threatening disease that can be caused by endotracheal tube intubation. Newborns and neonates are particularly susceptible to SGS owing to the small caliber of their airway.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate optical coherence tomography (OCT) capabilities in detecting injury and scar formation using a rabbit model. Optical coherence tomography may provide a noninvasive, bedside or intensive care unit modality for the identification of early airway trauma with the intention of preventing progression to SGS and can image the

Assessment of hyperthermia in pathological tissue is a promising strategy for earlier diagnosis of malignant tumors. In this study, temperature-sensitive co-polymeric nanohydrogel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PNIPA-co-AA) was successfully synthesized by the precipitation polymerization method. The diameters of nanohydrogels were controlled to be less than 100 nm. Also the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, 40 °C) was manipulated above physiological temperature after integration of near-infrared (NIR) organic dye (heptamethine cyanine dye, HMCD) within its interior cores

Suffering from the background light scattering, the imaging contrast of a microsphere microscope is relatively low. In this paper, a near-infrared (NIR) microsphere microscope is proposed to enhance the imaging contrast. The imaging contrast is evaluated using different objective lenses at different microsphere diameters. The utilization of microspheres enhances the resolution of NIR objectives, enabling the distinction of structures with ∼220nm gaps. A far-field intensity distribution simulation is used to explain the reduced off-axis scattering under NIR illumination, and a modified refracti

The visualization of tissue architecture has long been constrained by optical absorption and scattering phenomena. Recent advances in optical tissue clearing techniques have revolutionized deep tissue imaging by overcoming these fundamental limitations, enabling high-resolution microscopic examination of intact organ systems. In ophthalmic research, these methodologies provide transformative capabilities for macroscopic three-dimensional visualization, effectively addressing the spatial constraints inherent to conventional two-dimensional histological sections. This paradigm shift has opened n

Cerenkov luminescence imaging (CLI) enables noninvasive and real-time tracking of the in vivo distribution of radiopharmaceuticals by detecting Cerenkov optical signals generated during radionuclide decay. However, biological tissues exhibit strong scattering and absorption in the visible spectrum, which not only markedly attenuate Cerenkov signals but also cause discrepancies between the detected optical signals and the actual in vivo distribution of radiopharmaceuticals, thereby limiting the imaging accuracy of CLI. Here, we demonstrate that skin optical clearing alleviates this limitation a

Continuous-wave near-infrared diffuse optical imaging (DOI) relies on accurate differential pathlength factors (DPFs) for quantitative chromophore estimation. Existing DPF definitions inherit formulation-dependent limitations that can introduce large errors in modified Beer-Lambert law (MBLL) analyses and associated inverse estimations. We propose two new DPF formulations: an MBLL-based formulation derived directly from photon-transport statistics and an experimentally practical inverse-distance model that closely reproduces the results of the more rigorous MBLL-based formulation. These models

Accurate prediction of anthropometric body composition variables, such as Appendicular Lean Mass (ALM), Body Fat Percentage (BFP), and Bone Mineral Density (BMD), is essential for early diagnosis of several chronic diseases. Currently, researchers rely on Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scans to measure these metrics; however, DXA scans are costly and time-consuming. This work proposes an alternative to DXA scans by applying statistical and machine learning models on biomarkers (height, volume, left calf circumference, etc.) obtained from 3D optical images. The dataset consists of 847 p
