Domoic acid in Canadian Pacific waters, from 2016 to 2021, and relationships with physical and chemical conditions.

Domoic acid, a phycotoxin produced by species of the marine diatom Pseudo-nitzschia, can cause deleterious impacts to marine food webs and human health. Domoic acid and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were surveyed from 2016 to 2021 in the Pacific waters of Canada to assess their occurrences, concentrations, and relationships with physical and chemical conditions. Domoic acid was common, occurring in measurable concentrations in 73 % of the 454 samples. It occurred in all regions (west coast of Vancouver Island, Salish Sea, Queen Charlotte Sound / Hecate Strait, deep oceanic NE Pacific), in all years an

Genomic analysis of Ostreococcus tauri-infecting viruses reveals a hypervariable region associated with host-virus interactions.

While the genus Prasinovirus, known to infect prasinophyte green algae (class Mamiellophyceae), is abundant in the oceans, the genetic mechanisms governing the ecology and (co)evolution of these viruses remain poorly understood. In this study, we sequenced the complete genomes of eighteen viruses infecting the cosmopolitan unicellular green alga Ostreococcus tauri (OtVs) and one specific to Micromonas commoda (McV-20 T). Of these viruses, 12 were previously isolated from the coastal Mediterranean Sea and seven were newly isolated from two different geographical locations (i.e. the South Pacifi

Viral tropism and pathology associated with viral hemorrhagic septicemia in larval and juvenile Pacific herring.

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) genotype IVa causes mass mortality in wild Pacific herring, a species of economic value, in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. Young of the year herring are particularly susceptible and can be carriers of the virus. To understand its pathogenesis, tissue and cellular tropisms of VHSV in larval and juvenile Pacific herring were investigated with immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, and viral tissue titer. In larval herring, early viral tropism for epithelial tissues (6d post-exposure) was indicated by foci of epidermal thickening that conta

[Diphyllobothriasis in the Far East of the USSR].

The analysis of the literary data has shown that the population of the Far East is infected not with D. latum, as in other areas of the disease distribution, but with the Far Eastern tapeworm type D. klebanovskii. The final hosts of the parasite are the representatives of the Carnivora order, while the additional hosts are fish of Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus genera. Helminthiasis foci are localized in seaside biotopes on the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. The remaining area of the disease distribution, including Maritime and Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin and Kamchatka re

Isolation and chemical characterization of a toxin isolated from the venom of the sea snake, Hydrophis torquatus aagardi.

Sea snakes (family: Hydrophiidae) are serpents found in the coastal areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are two subfamilies in Hydrophiidae: Hydrophiinae and Laticaudinae. A toxin, aagardi toxin, was isolated from the venom of the Hydrophiinae snake, Hydrophis torquatus aagardi and its chemical properties such as molecular weight, isoelectric point, importance of disulfide bonds, lack of enzymatic activity and amino acid sequence were determined. The amino acid sequence indicated a close relationship to the primary structure of other Hydrophiinae toxins and a significant difference f

New species of Ontocetus (Pinnipedia: Odobenidae) from the Lower Pleistocene of the North Atlantic shows similar feeding adaptation independent to the extant walrus (Odobenus rosmarus).

Ontocetus is one of the most notable extinct odobenines owing to its global distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. Originating in the Late Miocene of the western North Pacific, this lineage quickly spread to the Atlantic Ocean during the Pliocene, with notable occurrences in England, Belgium, The Netherlands, Morocco and the eastern seaboard of the United States. Reassessment of a pair of mandibles from the Lower Pleistocene of Norwich (United Kingdom) and a mandible from the Upper Pliocene of Antwerp (Belgium) that were referred to as Ontocetus emmonsi reveals existences of features of both

Effects of warming, eutrophication and climate variability on acidification of the seasonally stratified North Yellow Sea over the past 40 years.

The North Yellow Sea (NYS) is a productive marginal sea of the western North Pacific. In summer and autumn, CaCO3 saturation states beneath the seasonal thermocline in the NYS have frequently fallen below critical levels, indicating that marine calcifying organisms are under threat. To explore the long-term evolution of the acidification of the NYS, we reconstructed seasonal variations in subsurface aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) and pH during 1976-2017, using wintertime and summertime temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH data mainly from a quality-controlled oceanographic databa

Summer bloom of Vulcanodinium rugosum in Cienfuegos Bay (Cuba) associated to dermatitis in swimmers.

The marine dinoflagellate Vulcanodinium rugosum produces powerful paralyzing and cytotoxic compounds named pinnatoxins (PnTX) and portimines. Even though, no related human intoxication episodes following direct exposure in seawater or the ingestion of contaminated seafood have been documented so far. This study aimed at investigating a dinoflagellate bloom linked to acute dermatitis cases in two recreational beaches in Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba. We used epidemiological and clinical data from 60 dermatitis cases consisting of individuals in close contact with the bloom. Seawater physical-chemical pr

Global gradients of coral exposure to environmental stresses and implications for local management.

BACKGROUND: The decline of coral reefs globally underscores the need for a spatial assessment of their exposure to multiple environmental stressors to estimate vulnerability and evaluate potential counter-measures. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study combined global spatial gradients of coral exposure to radiation stress factors (temperature, UV light and doldrums), stress-reinforcing factors (sedimentation and eutrophication), and stress-reducing factors (temperature variability and tidal amplitude) to produce a global map of coral exposure and identify areas where exposure depends on

Ultrastructural characters of the spermatozoa in Digeneans of the genus Bianium Stunkard, 1930 (Digenea, Lepocreadiidae) parasites of fishes: a comparative study of Bianium plicitum and Bianium arabicum.

We present in this paper the first ultrastructural study of the spermatozoon of species of the genus Bianium Stunkard, 1930, namely Bianium plicitum and Bianium arabicum belonging to the family Lepocreadiidae. Specimens are parasites of the tetraodontid teleosts Lagocephalus laevigatus caught in the Atlantic Ocean and Lagocephalus sceleratus caught in Pacific Ocean, respectively. Live worms were fixed and processed for transmission electron microscopy. Observations of numerous cross and longitudinal sections of the spermatozoa of B. plicitum and B. arabicum demonstrated the general pattern des

[Survey of lymphatic filariasis on Ouvea Island in New Caledonia].

Several cases of Bancroftian filariasis were recently reported on Ouvea Island which is part of the archipelago of New Caledonia located in the south Pacific Ocean. Following these reports systematic screening was carried out in a group of 382 adult consultees at two medical dispensaries. Tests to detect microfilariae in the blood and antibodies in serum were performed at the Pasteur Institute in New Caledonia and the Malarde Institute in Papeete, French Polynesia, respectively. Of the two subjects with manifestations consistent with filariasis, one was seropositive but neither presented micro

On some species of the genera Campylaspenis and Campylaspis (Crustacea, Cumacea, Nannastacidae) from the Sea of Japan (Northwest Pacific), with description of a new species of Campylaspenis.

The cumacean genus Campylaspenis (Cumacea: Nannastacidae) currently consists of two species, characterized by an unusual character, the presence of a pair of large penial lobes in adult males, the only character which distinguishes the genus from the genus Campylaspis. This study, based on specimens from the Sea of Japan, describes a new species, C. sigeogamoi sp. nov, and Campylaspis pisum Vassilenko & Tzareva, 2004 is re-described and transferred to the genus Campylaspenis. Additionally, two species of Campylaspis, C. crispa (re-described) and C. brevirostris (briefly re-described) are repor

Diet and prey selectivity in co-occurring eelpout fish and bythograeid crabs in a deep-sea hydrothermal vent community.

Some minimally invasive techniques have been introduced to decrease morbidity related to standard laparoscopic procedures. One such approach is laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS), which can also be applied for transvesical surgery. The aim of the study was to present our initial clinical experience of using this technique for transvesical vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repair. In August 2011, we carried out the LESS repair of a 3-mm in diameter vesicovaginal fistula on a 72-year-old woman, who failed the conservative treatment with Foley placement. The procedure was performed transvesica

Resurrection of the snailfish genus Allinectes (Teleostei: Cottiformes: Liparidae) for seven North Pacific species, including descriptions of three new species from Alaska.

The subgenus Allinectes was established by Jordan & Evermann (1898) for the single species Careproctus ectenes. I elevate Allinectes to genus, based on the elongate anterior dorsal-fin rays followed by a distinct notch found in both sexes of all its members. With A. ectenes, I allocate six additional species to Allinectes: A. curilanus, A. attenuatus, A. pycnosoma, and three new species, described herein. The three new species, A. istiophorus, A. busbyi, and A. nanstanorum, are described on the basis of individuals collected in the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea during fisheries resource asse

Dissolved organic matter stimulates N2 fixation and nifH gene expression in Trichodesmium.

Mixotrophy, the combination of heterotrophic and autotrophic nutrition modes, is emerging as the rule rather than the exception in marine photosynthetic plankton. Trichodesmium, a prominent diazotroph ubiquitous in the (sub)tropical oceans, is generally considered to obtain energy via autotrophy. While the ability of Trichodesmium to use dissolved organic phosphorus when deprived of inorganic phosphorus sources is well known, the extent to which this important cyanobacterium may benefit from other dissolved organic matter (DOM) resources is unknown. Here we provide evidence of carbon-, nitroge

A new species of Chondracanthus (Cyclopoida: Chondracanthidae) parasitic on deep-sea Dibranchus spongiosa(Lophiiformes: Ogcocephalidae) from the Eastern Central Pacific.

A total of 228 sampling stations were visited for benthic fauna during a series of oceanographic cruises in the Gulf of California, west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, and Eastern Central Pacific from year 1991 to 2014. Among others, three fish species of the genus Dibranchus were caught in 28 stations. Of these, D. spongiosa was the most common and abundant. Close inspection of this fish revealed the presence of a new species of parasitic copepod, Chondracanthus dibranchi sp. nov., found in the gill cavity of seven specimens of D. spongiosa. Chondracanthus dibranchi sp. nov. seems to

Evacuation planning for plausible worst case inundation scenarios in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Honolulu is susceptible to coastal flooding hazards. Like other coastal cities, Honolulu&s long-term economic viability and sustainability depends on how well it can adapt to changes in the natural and built environment. While there is a disagreement over the magnitude and extent of localized impacts associated with climate change, it is widely accepted that by 2100 there will be at least a meter in sea level rise (SLR) and an increase in extreme weather events. Increased exposure and vulnerabilities associated with urbanization and location of human activities in coastal areas warrants seriou
