Co-Sleeping as a Protector against Malocclusion in the Primary Dentition: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Mothers practice co-sleeping and breastfeeding simultaneously, for convenience and to strengthen bonding. Due to the scarcity of studies analyzing the impact of co-sleeping on primary dentition, this study aimed to analyze the possible effects of co-sleeping on children’s occlusion. In this cross-sectional study, mothers of 221 children aged 2−5 years who had been breastfed for less than 6 months completed a questionnaire about non-nutritive sucking habits. The WHO (World Health Organization) and IOTN-AC indices (the Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need) were used to

Factors affecting exclusive breastfeeding in the first month of life among Amazonian children.

Early life feeding practices can directly affect the growth, development, and survival of a child. This study aimed to estimate the frequency of and factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in the first month of life among Amazonian infants. We used data of 1,523 mother-child pairs of the MINA-Brazil birth cohort study. Mothers were interviewed soon after delivery at baseline and by telephone at 30-45 days postpartum (n = 962, 63.2% of those eligible). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and accelerated failure-time (AFT) models were used to estimate the probability of EBF and the fact

The prevalence of cobedding and SIDS-related child care practices in twins.

UNLABELLED: Sudden unexplained and unexpected death in twins has not been well studied, particularly in relation to the common practice of sleeping twin infants together in the same cot (cobedding). Postal surveys of 109 mothers of twins were undertaken when the infants were 6 weeks, 4 months, and 8 months of age to determine the prevalence of cobedding, infant care practices related to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and the mother's knowledge of SIDS risk factors. SIDS risk factor knowledge was similar to an earlier survey of singletons in 2005. At 6 weeks, 76% of infants usually slept

"What can I do to enhance the development of a premature infant with chronic lung disease?".

CASE. Timmy was born at 32 weeks of gestation after an uncomplicated pregnancy until there was a spontaneous rupture of the membranes and preterm labor associated with chorioamnionitis. A 2-month hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was associated with pneumonia, a Grade II intraventricular hemorrhage, chronic lung disease, and a slow weight gain in the nursery. He was discharged to home with plans for ongoing care by his pediatrician. The primary care pediatrician attended a multidisciplinary conference with the NICU staff and Timmy's parents. At the time of discharge fr

Impact of nasal airway obstruction on dentofacial development and sleep disturbances in children: preliminary notes.

Respiratory disorders in the upper respiratory tract during sleep are most often part of a continuous pathological process of long standing. Schematically, three clinical syndromes with increasing severity are described: breathing with the mouth open, snoring and sleep apneal hypopnea syndrome. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a subtle, but severe sleep disorder of early childhood. It is often difficult to detect and may have long-term consequences, including failure to thrive, behavioral disturbances, developmental delay, and cor pulmonale. These conditions always include a function

Comprehensive survey on the use of plastic additives in toy products used in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Plastic additives have adverse effects on human health. Children frequently use toys that contain various substances found in paints, plasticizers, and other materials, which heighten the risk of specific chemical exposure. Infants are particularly prone to chemical exposure through the "mouthing" behavior because of the possibility of placing toys in their mouths. Thus, this vulnerability should be considered during risk assessments of chemical exposure. METHODS: This study performed a comprehensive analysis of the chemical components in various 84 plastic toys including "designa

Malocclusion and deleterious oral habits among adolescents in a developing area in northeastern Brazil.

Although malocclusions represent a serious public health issue, there is insufficient information about this problem in adolescents in Brazil, especially in poorer areas. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the prevalence of facial alterations, dental malocclusions, and deleterious oral habits (DOH) among adolescents in a developing area in northeastern Brazil and to test the hypothesis that the occurrence of DOH in infancy is associated with DOH during adolescence. The study included a probabilistic population-based sample of 2,060 Brazilian students aged 12-15 years. Fa

Growth and development in the pediatric patient.

What is the most important aspect of children's dentistry? Some may argue that it is the restoration orprevention of decay and disease. Others may describe nutrition. The diagnosis and treatment of proper growth and development, I feel is the most important responsibility of our practices. What we do or don't do can affect the child for life. Unfortunately, many of us lack the abilities we need to affectively monitor or augment, if necessary, proper growth and development. The purpose of this paper is to provide us with some basic knowledge, tools and treatments.

Comparative Efficacy of Fixed Versus Removable Habit-Breaking Appliances for the Management of Non-nutritive Sucking Habits: A Systematic Review.

Non-nutritive sucking habits, including thumb, finger, and pacifier sucking, are common self-soothing behaviors in early childhood, and persistence beyond the preschool years is associated with anterior open bite, increased overjet, and altered orofacial function. Interceptive management often involves habit-breaking appliances that may be fixed or removable, yet their relative effectiveness remains debated. This systematic review compared the clinical efficacy of fixed versus removable habit-breaking appliances in achieving habit cessation and correcting associated dentoalveolar discrepancies

Morphogenetic Expression of Genes in Class II Division 2 Malocclusion: A Pedigree Study.

Introduction The etiology of malocclusion is multifactorial, involving both genetic and environmental influences. The literature has shown that neither a single entity, hereditary or genetic factors, nor ecological factors alone are responsible for causing malocclusion; furthermore, constant thumb-sucking and pacifier use, bony anomalies, congenitally missing teeth, oral injury, mouth breathing, etc., often cause malocclusion. Participants were selected from those who reported to the outpatient department of the Karnavati School of Dentistry in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, indicating a clinic-
