Prefrontal cortex stimulation normalizes deficient adaptive learning from outcome contingencies in low mood.

Depression and anxiety are associated with deficits in adjusting learning behaviour to changing outcome contingencies. This is likely to drive and maintain symptoms, for instance, by perpetuating negative biases or a sense of uncontrollability. Normalising such deficits in adaptive learning might therefore be a novel treatment target for affective disorders. The aim of this experimental medicine study was to test whether prefrontal cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could normalise these aberrant learning processes in depressed mood. To test proof-of-concept, we combined tDC

Single-cell immune repertoire atlas maps coordinated circulating adaptive immune states in inflammatory bowel disease.

UNLABELLED: Single-cell studies have defined immune states in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but how adaptive receptor histories organize circulating immunity remains unclear. We generated a single-cell transcriptomic atlas of peripheral blood from 249 participants with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or non-IBD control status, including 182 with productive TCR and BCR recovery. Expanded TCR clonotypes marked inflammatory-memory and cytotoxic states, while distinct but similar paired TCRs shared inflammatory programs across participants. BCR lineage maturation linked IgA-associated muc

Molecular and clinical analyses with neuropsychological assessment of a case of del(10)(q26.2qter) without intellectual disability: Genomic and transcriptomic combined approach and review of the literature.

Terminal deletion of the long arm of the chromosome 10 is a rare but well known abnormality, with a large phenotypic variability. Very few data are available about subtelomeric deletion 10q26 patients without intellectual disability. Herein, we report the case of a young adult with a classical 10q26.2qter deletion. She exhibited mainly short stature at birth and in childhood/adulthood without intellectual disability or behavioral problems. After clinical and neuropsychological assessments, we performed genomic array and transcriptomic analysis and compared our results to the data available in

Synchrony Detection of Linguistic Stimuli in the Presence of Faces: Neuropsychological Implications for Language Development in ASD.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may be impaired in their ability to detect audiovisual synchrony and their ability may be influenced by the nature of the stimuli. We investigated the possibility that synchrony detection is disrupted by the presence of human faces by testing children with ASD using a preferential looking language-based paradigm. Children with low language abilities were significantly worse at detecting synchrony when the stimuli include an unobscured face than when the face was obscured. Findings suggest that the presence of faces may make multisensory processing

Attention training to pleasant stimuli in anxiety.

Attentional bias for threatening stimuli in anxiety is a common finding in the literature. The present study addressed whether attention training toward pleasant stimuli can reduce anxiety symptoms and induce a processing bias in favor of pleasant information in nonpatients who were selected to score similarly to individuals with generalized anxiety or panic disorder on a measure of worry or physiological arousal, respectively. Participants were randomly assigned to attention training to pleasant (ATP) stimuli or to a placebo control (PC) condition. All participants completed baseline and post

Influence of continual biofeedback on jaw pursuit-tracking in healthy adults and in adults with apraxia plus aphasia.

Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a disorder of motor programming resulting from damage to premotor or anterior insula cortex. The authors used a pursuit visuomotor tracking task to test whether such a disorder interferes with development of motor programs or with modification of existing programs via integration of feedback. Healthy older adults (n = 15) and adults with AOS plus aphasia and nonverbal apraxia (n = 8) performed a jaw movement task with (a) continuous visual feedback of a target movement pattern and their jaw movement and (b) no feedback. Healthy speakers were more accurate and less va

Does flavor-nutrient learning promote or protect against diet-induced obesity? Individual differences in conditionability predict resistance to weight gain in rats.

Flavor-nutrient learning (FNL) refers to learning associations between a food's flavor and the rewarding appetition signals that arise from post-oral nutrient sensing during or after a meal. In rodent models FNL reliably produces strong flavor preferences and increased intake of nutrient-paired flavors, implicating FNL as a presumptive obesogenic influence in the modern environment. However, evidence that FNL plays a causal role in diet-induced obesity is ambiguous. We have previously shown that degree of weight gain on a high-fat/sugar diet is associated with stronger FNL responses, but direc

Covert person recognition: its fadeout in a case of temporal lobe degeneration.

Covert person recognition was investigated longitudinally over a three-year period in a patient suffering from "Crossmodal Familiar Person Agnosia", possibly due to a fronto-temporal dementia in its right temporal variant (Gentileschi et al., 2001). The progressive neuronal degeneration in the cortical regions critical for face recognition (viz., right infero-temporal areas) presented us with the opportunity to check Burton et al.'s (1991) and Farah et al.'s (1993) hypothesis on the dissociation between overt and covert face recognition in a neuropsychological condition which, however, is neur

Fetal and infantile alcohol-mediated associative learning in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Infant rats express conditioned responses to an odor experienced prenatally as a chemosensory cue associated with moderate alcohol intoxication. This study examined postnatal intake of a chemosensory cue (cineole) that had been paired with alcohol's unconditioned effects. It also tested the interaction between prenatal association and postnatal conditioning with cineole and alcohol. METHODS: Pregnant female rats intubated with cineole were given ethanol (EtOH).25 or 4.0 hr later. Other groups received only water or water paired with ethanol. During postnatal day 15 (PD15), infant

How young children learn mental state words: Decision processes and links to theory of mind.

Learning words that refer to mental states is a critical developmental milestone, yet how these words are learned remains poorly understood. In this study, 102 Chinese young children (Mage = 3.28; 45 girls) and 102 young adults (Mage = 22.67; 54 women) completed a novel word-learning task, in which a pseudoword was paired with videos depicting goal-directed reaching and distressed crying. Results indicated that children had difficulty learning mental state words, as reflected by their lower accuracy compared to adults. Diffusion model analyses further explored the underlying processes and foun

Evidence of mutual non-verbal synchrony in learners with severe learning disability and autism, and their support workers: a motion energy analysis study.

INTRODUCTION: Some research indicates that neurodivergent people are less likely than "neurotypical" people to adapt their movements to a partner's movements to facilitate interpersonal motor synchrony. Researchers therefore suggest synchrony deficits underlie the social differences associated with autism and other neurodivergences. Intensive Interaction (II) is a client-led approach, where Learning Support Workers (LSW) follow the lead of learners to create balanced and reciprocal interactions. METHODS: We aimed to examine the balance of synchrony in learners with autism and Severe Learning

Behavioral and functional MRI study of attention shift in human verbal working memory.

The tripartite model of memory proposed the requirement of attentional switching when accessing different items in working memory [J. Exp. Psychol. Learn. Mem. Cogn. 27 (2001) 817]. This internal focus of attention is limited to just one item and the switching process is time-consuming [Mem. Cogn. 26 (1998) 263]. In the current study, given a three-digit list stored in working memory, we found that it took longer to shift attention in the direction of "Upstream" than "Downstream", and that each shift was a "single step" process. To investigate the neural basis of this type of attention switchi

Impulsivity and craving in subjects with opioid use disorder on methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is effective in decreasing opioid use or facilitating abstinence. Previous studies using small opioid use disorder samples suggest that cognitive impairments including impulsivity and executive functions may partially improve on MMT, but a range of deficits may persist. However, systematic assessments with larger samples are needed to confirm the profile of cognitive functions on MMT. METHODS: We assessed four types of impulsivity (delay discounting, reflection impulsivity, risk taking and motoric impulsivity), executive functioning (spatial w

Beep tones attenuate pain following Pavlovian conditioning of an endogenous pain control mechanism.

Heterotopic noxious counter-stimulation (HNCS) is commonly used to study endogenous pain control systems. The resulting pain inhibition is primarily based on spinal cord-brainstem loops. Recently, functional imaging studies have shown that limbic structures like the anterior cingulate cortex and amygdala are also implicated. Since these structures are involved in learning processes, it is possible that the HNCS-induced pain inhibition may depend on specific cues from the environment that have been associated with pain reduction through associative learning. We investigated the influence of Pav

Chemogenetic silencing of neurons in retrosplenial cortex disrupts sensory preconditioning.

An essential aspect of episodic memory is the formation of associations between neutral sensory cues in the environment. In light of recent evidence that this critical aspect of learning does not require the hippocampus, we tested the involvement of the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) in this process using a chemogenetic approach that allowed us to temporarily silence neurons along the entire rostrocaudal extent of the RSC. A viral vector containing the gene for a synthetic inhibitory G-protein-coupled receptor (hM4Di) was infused into RSC. When the receptor was later activated by systemic injectio

Sustained learned immunosuppression could not prevent local allergic ear swelling in a rat model of contact hypersensitivity.

Taste-immune associative learning has been shown to mimic immunopharmacological responses. Conditioned pharmacological effects may therefore be considered as controlled drug dose reduction strategy to maintain treatment efficacy. Against this background, the present study applied an established taste-immune associative learning protocol to a rat model of DNFB-induced contact hypersensitivity. After repeated pairings of a saccharin taste (conditioned stimulus, CS) with injections of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine A (CsA, unconditioned stimulus, UCS), animals were sensitized with the hapten.

Grapheme-Phoneme Learning in an Unknown Orthography: A Study in Typical Reading and Dyslexic Children.

In this study, we examined the learning of new grapheme-phoneme correspondences in individuals with and without dyslexia. Additionally, we investigated the relation between grapheme-phoneme learning and measures of phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge and rapid automatized naming, with a focus on the unique joint variance of grapheme-phoneme learning to word and non-word reading achievement. Training of grapheme-phoneme associations consisted of a 20-min training program in which eight novel letters (Hebrew) needed to be paired with speech sounds taken from the participant's native l

Brain-to-Brain Coupling Is Associated With the Benefits of Delayed Imitation in Skill Acquisition: An fNIRS Study.

PURPOSE: Observational learning through imitation is an important ability across various domains. Although research has found that delayed imitation produces superior learning outcomes compared with other observational learning strategies, the underlying reason for this advantage remains unclear. This study investigated whether interpersonal brain synchronization (IBS) between learners and demonstrators is related to the benefits of delayed imitation. METHODS: A total of 48 pairs of participants (Mage = 19.44, SDage = 0.71) engaged in an abacus learning task under three learning conditions: o

Dopamine D2/3 receptors and functional connectivity during fear extinction: A PET-fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to learn what is dangerous in the environment and what no longer exerts a threat is essential for survival. The latter process is studied using Pavlovian fear extinction, the repeated presentation of a feared stimulus that gradually attenuates the fear response. Dysregulation of the extinction process is implicated in a range of anxiety disorders, yet the neurobiological mechanisms supporting extinction learning in humans remain incompletely mapped, particularly with respect to the modulating role of dopamine. OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of baseline dopamine D2/3 re

Classifier Effect Masked by Taxonomic Relations: Through the Lens of a Similarity Judgment Task.

Classifiers, as a reference-tracking device of nouns, have caught much research attention over the past two decades. Beyond their grammatical function, classifiers are unique in their semantic association with the internal properties of head nouns, which raises questions about the relationship between language and cognition. Previous research reported a classifier effect (e.g., Saalbach and Imai in Lang Cogn Processes 27(3):381-428, 2012; Speed et al. in J Exp Psychol Learn Memory Cogn 7(4):625-640, 2021), with classifier speakers (vs. non-classifier speakers) showing greater sensitivity to pa
