Extending smoking abstinence after release from smoke-free prisons: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A smoking ban was implemented across all prisons in Queensland, Australia, in May 2014, with the aim of improving the health of prisoners and prison staff. However, relapse to smoking after release from prison is common. Only one previous study, conducted in the United States, has used a randomised design to evaluate an intervention to assist individuals in remaining abstinent from smoking following release from a smoke-free prison. METHODS: This paper describes the rationale for and design of a randomised controlled trial of an intervention to extend smoking abstinence in men aft

Neonatal jaundice and scientific fraud in 1804.

In 1785 the University of Paris issued a prize challenge: "Describe neonatal jaundice and distinguish between those circumstances in which jaundice needs professional help and those in which one only needs to await the course of nature." The prize was awarded to Jean Baptiste Timothée Baumes for a paper, published as a pamphlet in 1788, in which he described 10 jaundiced neonates and discussed his theories on the causes and mechanisms. In a revised edition published in 1806 Baumes accused François Bidault of plagiarism in his 1804 thesis submitted for the MD degree at the University of Paris.

Readability of patient information leaflets for commonly used medicines in the UK, Germany and Türkiye: a cross-sectional document analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is a key determinant of individuals' ability to use medications safely and correctly. The readability of patient information leaflets (PILs) plays a critical role in patient safety and treatment adherence. Inadequate readability may limit patients' understanding of medication instructions and increase the risk of misuse. This study aimed to comparatively examine the readability levels of patient information leaflets for medications commonly used in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Türkiye. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used in the study. The research was co

Preventing recurrent ankle sprains: Is the use of an App more cost-effective than a printed Booklet? Results of a RCT.

Recurrent ankle sprains can be reduced by following a neuromuscular training (NMT) program via a printed Booklet or a mobile application. Regarding the high incidence of ankle sprains, cost-effectiveness regarding implementation can have a large effect on total societal costs. In this economic analysis, we evaluated whether the method of implementing a proven effective NMT program using an App or a Booklet resulted in differences in injury incidence rates leading to costs and hence to differences in cost-effectiveness. In total, 220 athletes with a previous ankle sprain were recruited for this

The use of illustrations and narrative text style to improve readability of a health education brochure.

Research suggests that much of the available health education literature requires a level of reading ability that makes it inaccessible to a large proportion of the population in greatest need of health information. The present study tested the value of illustrations and a narrative text style as means of improving the readability of a brochure designed to provide information on cervical cancer and condyloma. Two versions of the brochure were designed, one that had only text presented as simple sentences in bullet-type format (SMOG reading level score of 7.7), and a second version that had som

The development of a testicular self-examination instructional booklet for adolescents.

Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common cancer in 15-34-year-old males, but many young men are unaware of their risks, symptoms, and possibility of detection by testicular self-examination (TSE). After a pretest to determine baseline knowledge and TSE activity, 66 young men, 15-20 years old (means = 18.5 +/- 1.5), were given a programmed-learning self-instructional booklet to read. A posttest after completion of reading the booklet assessed attitudes and new knowledge. A 2-year follow-up tested knowledge and current TSE activity. Pretest analysis revealed that only 15% of the subjects were a

Approaches to the alcohol problem in the workplace.

The main problem areas posed by either alcohol or alcoholism in the workplace are identified as alcohol-related accidents, reduced work performance and loss of working time. In addition to the heavy costs of these problems for industry, it is suggested that a further and generally ignored burden comes from the premature death in middle life of alcoholics who will include a disproportionately large number of top management and more skilled employees. A comparison with the history of alcohol-related road traffic accidents suggests that there is scope for large savings from an effective campaign

Effectiveness of a multi-component intervention including pictorial warnings to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption - a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a significant source of added sugars in the Indian diet, contributing to adverse health outcomes such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental caries. Multi-component interventions (MCIs) have shown promise in reducing the consumption of harmful products like tobacco. This study assessed the effectiveness of a multi-component intervention-comprising Pictorial Health Warnings (PHWs), educational pamphlets, and targeted counseling-in reducing parental purchases of SSBs for children. METHODS: A randomized stepped-wedge controlled trial was conduc
