BACKGROUND: There are only a few reports concerning long-term exocrine function after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), although the number of long-term survivors has increased. Chronic relapsing pancreatitis and its hereditary form are very rare in children. Our experience with early operative treatment in nine children is presented. The good exocrine and endocrine function of the pancreas in these patients justifies early operation when typical changes of the pancreatic duct are present since it shortens the relapsing clinical course and maintains good function of the pancreas.

145 clinical observations of 114 patients with Crohn's disease and 65 observations of 47 patients with ulcerative colitis were analyzed prospectively concerning the prevalence of pathologically elevated levels of serumamylase or -lipase and acute pancreatitis. Donohue syndrome is a rare congenital syndrome of insulin-resistance and abnormal glucose homeostasis, caused by mutations in the insulin receptor (INSR) gene. Diabetic neuropathic cachexia is characterized by neuropathic pain and severe weight loss of unknown aetiology. We describe four patients with diabetic neuropathic cachexia who were found to have malabsorption. Maldigestion caused by a pancreatic enzyme insufficiency was diagnosed in a 10-year-old Scottish Terrier on the basis of clinical signs and gastrointestinal function test results. The histologic diagnosis was pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Maldigestion is an unusual manifestation of this malignancy, particularly in the absence of other clinical signs.
