MR findings in a rare case of sclerosing mesenteritis of the mesocolon.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, usually benign disorder of the mesentery. Depending on the predominant tissue component (inflammation, fat, or fibrosis), it is known as mesenteric panniculitis or retractile mesenteritis. We present a rare case of retractile mesenteritis of the mesocolon as a cause of severe abdominal pain. US, CT, and MRI were the imaging modalities used. We emphasize the MR finding of a fibrous capsula in retractile mesenteritis, as this is to our knowledge the first study to describe this entity. This finding may be valuable for establishing a diagnosis of sclerosing mese

Concomitant sclerosing mesenteritis and inflammatory pseudotumor simulating gastric lymphoma or linitis plastica.

Both inflammatory pseudotumors and sclerosing (retractile) mesenteritis are uncommon conditions of unknown origin. A number of authors have reported patients presenting with complaints that were attributed to one or the other of these entities. In our review of the literature, we were unable to find a single case report of mixed abdominal findings that could be explained by the presence of both conditions. We report a case of the patient presenting with abdominal mass that was identified as having features of both sclerosing mesenteritis and inflammatory pseudotumor on pathologic diagnosis.

Mesenteric Panniculitis (MP): A Frequent Coincidental CT Finding of Debatable Clinical Significance.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is histologically characterized by chronic nonspecific inflammation of the adipose tissue of the intestinal mesentery with unclear etiology. MP occurs predominantly in men, mostly in mid to late adulthood. MP is typically found as an incidental diagnosis on abdominal CT. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature including case reports and cohort studies was performed. Therefore, a global search in PubMed was carried out. Search terms were (and/or) "mesenteric panniculitis", "panniculitis mesenterialis", "mesenteric lymph nodes", "CT", "imaging"

A Single Tertiary Center 14-year Experience With Mesenteric Panniculitis in Turkey: A Retrospective Study of 716 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis is a chronic inflammatory process seen in mesenteric tissue. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence, clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings, and malignancy in patients diagnosed with mesenteric panniculitis using computed tomography. METHODS: A total of 716 patients with mesenteric panniculitis were retrospectively evaluated by screening all computed tomography scans performed between January 2005 and December 2018. RESULTS: Among 65 278 patients undergoing CT, 716 were diagnosed with mesenteric panniculitis. The prevalence of mese

A case of protein-losing enteropathy caused by sclerosing mesenteritis diagnosed with capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy.

A 75-year-old man presented with abdominal distension, hypoproteinemia, ascites and a 35-mm mass in the small bowel mesentery. Laparotomy was performed, and he was diagnosed with sclerosing mesenteritis. His clinical condition improved, with computed tomography (CT) showing tumor shrinkage and decreasing ascites after administration of prednisolone; however, on drug withdrawal, abdominal fullness recurred and CT revealed an enlarging tumor and increasing ascites. Capsule endoscopy (CE) and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) were performed to further investigate hypoalbuminemia, which revealed wh

Extrahepatic, nonneoplastic, fat-containing lesions of the abdominopelvic cavity: spectrum of lesions, significance, and typical appearance on multidetector computed tomography.

Fat may be noted in a diffuse or focal manner in a variety of nonneoplastic abdominopelvic conditions. The specific signature of macroscopic fat on computed tomography along with the usually characteristic findings of these entities makes the diagnosis of most of these conditions relatively straightforward. In the intestinal tract, the "fat halo sign" usually arises in the context of subacute to chronic bowel wall inflammation. Excess fat in the renal sinus may occur with renal sinus lipomatosis or "replacement lipomatosis of the kidney." Some cases of "pancreatic lipomatosis" may culminate in

Mesenteric panniculitis patients requiring emergency surgery: report of three cases.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, benign disease characterized by a chronic non-specific inflammatory process of mesenteric fat tissue with unknown etiology. The small bowel mesentery is affected mostly. This process rarely involves the large intestine mesentery. Mesenteric panniculitis includes symptoms as abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and fever. In our cases, we had difficulty in the preoperative diagnosis as the clinical changes imitated an obstruction or ischemia of the small bowel. All the cases required emergency abdominal surgery and partial jejunal resec

[A case of suspected mesenteric panniculitis with a large amount of chylous ascites].

A 79-year-old man was admitted our hospital because of severe abdominal fullness. An abdominal ultrasonography showed a large amount of ascites, and diagnostic puncture detected chylous ascites. An abdominal computed tomography revealed a large amount of ascites and a multinodular mass with calcification in the mesentery of the small intestine. An infectious disease, such as tuberculosis, or malignant tumor was suspected to be the causative disease, but there was no diagnostic evidence in further examinations. Based on clinical features, imaging data and chylous ascites, we searched for case r

Mesenteric panniculitis presenting as a multilocular cystic mesenteric mass: CT and MR evaluation.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a non-neoplastic, inflammatory process affecting the adipose tissue of the mesentery in adults with slight male predilection. Typical computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are of either diffuse mesenteric infiltration or nodular mesenteric masses. We encountered a case of mesenteric panniculitis in a 26-year-old woman with the left upper quadrant pain and fullness, in which CT and MRI disclosed a large, ill-defined, multilocular cystic mesenteric mass. After surgery, the diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis was made. The cystic compone

[A case of systemic lupus erythematosus complicated with psoriasis vulgaris].

A 49-years-old female admitted to our hospital because of skin eruptions on the extremities in 1985. She had suffered from polyarthralgia, skin eruptions since 1983. Physical examinations revealed discoid lesion, central nervous system involvement, and polyarthritis. Laboratory tests revealed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and hypocomplementemia. Antinuclear antibody, ant-DNA antibody, LE test were positive. From these findings, she was diagnosed as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She developed lupus peritonitis in 1990 and 1994, which was successfully treated by steroid pulse therapy. Sinc

More than just metastases: a practical approach to solid mesenteric masses.

The abdominal mesenteries are important peritoneal structures that give rise to a wide spectrum of abnormalities, including solid mesenteric masses. Despite similarities in appearance, solid masses in the mesentery may have diverse etiologies, ranging from benign to highly malignant. While metastases are the most common cause of solid masses in the mesentery, other less common conditions are also important diagnostic considerations. This article reviews four pathologic entities (sclerosing mesenteritis, carcinoid tumors, desmoids tumors, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors) that may be manifes

Mesenteric Panniculitis Mimicking Metastases From Melanoma on FDG PET/CT in a Pediatric Patient Receiving Immunotherapy.

Inflammatory immune-related adverse events are known complications of immunotherapy, particularly checkpoint inhibitors. A 16-year-old girl with metastatic melanoma, treated with nivolumab, dabrafenib, and trametinib, presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. Initial CT suggested metastases, showing mesenteric stranding and targetoid lesions. FDG PET/CT confirmed increased FDG uptake in the same region, but subsequent MRI and follow-up findings pointed to mesenteric panniculitis.

Relapsing sclerosing mesenteritis with multiple strictures of the small intestine.

Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare disorder that involves the mesenteric adipose tissue with chronic fibrosing inflammation. Few reports mention the natural history of severe SM cases. Here, we report a severe and relapsing SM case in which a long-term natural history could be followed. The patient had undergone surgery for small bowel stenosis of unknown cause 10 years earlier. He had stopped visiting the hospital at his discretion. He was admitted to the hospital 10 years later due to recurrent symptoms, and a close examination revealed multiple small intestinal strictures; thus, surgery
