Non-human primates (NHPs) are known hosts for adenoviruses (AdVs), so there is the possibility of the zoonotic or cross-species transmission of AdVs. As with humans, AdV infections in animals can cause diseases that range from asymptomatic to fatal. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and diversity of AdVs in: (i) fecal samples of apes and monkeys from different African countries (Republic of Congo, Senegal, Djibouti and Algeria), (ii) stool of humans living near gorillas in the Republic of Congo, in order to explore the potential zoonotic risks. Samples were screened by re

Environmental challenges in the form of temperature extremes and unusual precipitation, which may lead to prolonged periods outside the thermoneutral zone, can be detrimental to animal physiology. Chacma baboons in the Cape Peninsula of South Africa, one of the highest latitudes at which nonhuman primates are found, experience extremes of both temperature and rainfall, as well as seasonal differences in day length that require animals to condense their daily routine into dramatically reduced daylight hours. Here we examine the effects of these climatic factors on the behavior (activity budgets

Hybridization may have played a substantial role in shaping the diversity of our evolving lineage. Although recent genomic evidence has shown that hybridization occurred between anatomically modern humans (AMHS) and Neanderthals, it remains difficult to pin down precisely where and when this gene flow took place. Investigations of the hybrid phenotype in primates and other mammals are providing models for identifying signatures of hybridization in the fossil record. However, our understanding of intra- and inter-taxon variation in hybrids is still limited. Moreover, there is little evidence fr

A total of 520 monkeys belonging to 6 species (Macaca mullata, M. fascicularis, M. nemestrina, Cercopithecus aethiops, Papio anubis, and P. hamadrias) were investigated. Total frequency of occurrence of the protozoan Cryptosporidium in the Adler apery constituted 13.8%. The majority of parasites were found in animals with intestinal disorders such as diarrhea. The lowest frequency of cryptosporidias occurrence was revealed in clinically healthy monkeys. Among sick monkeys, the invasion was most common in infants under one year of age. Cryptosporidiosis is rarely found just as it is, and, as a

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-somatostatin serum has allowed us to detect somatostatin containing cells in the Langerhans' islets of three species of monkeys (Macacus irus, Papio hamadryas, Cercopithecus aethiops). These cells are in close relationship with another cells, but occupy a more central position in the islets. Thus, the distribution of somatostatin-containing cells in the monkey's endocrine pancreas has not a similar pattern as in rodent's pancreas; they have a comparable topography as in the human islets but these cells are always more elongated than in the human

We have investigated the effects of iv administered noradrenergic agonists and antagonists on plasma GH concentration in the adolescent baboon, Papio papio, with the aim of defining the relative roles of adrenergic receptor subtypes (alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1, and beta 2) in the regulation of GH release. Clonidine (0.02 mg/kg) or UK-14,304 (0.02 mg/kg), potent centrally acting alpha 2 noradrenergic agonists, were infused into 24 animals pretreated with either saline, or selective alpha 1 and alpha 2 noradrenergic antagonists. Both agonists potently augment plasma GH, producing peak levels of 30

OBJECTIVES: In human foraging societies, hunting skill is often interpreted as a signal of male quality linked to reproductive success through his ability to provision his family and community. Similarly, in some bird and insect species, males offer mates food to indicate their quality as a provider. Among nonhuman primates, however, the relationship between meat sharing and reproductive success is underexplored, leaving the evolutionary origins of this phenomenon unresolved.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Guinea baboons (Papio papio) are a promising model to investigate whether meat sharing signals

Some primates are immune to infection by most African trypanosome parasites due to apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1), a primate-specific ion channel-forming protein. Our long-term objective has been to reduce African trypanosomiasis in livestock by genetic bioengineering of cattle with primate APOL1. To select which primate APOL1, we analyzed Papio ssp. APOL1 proteins and found that Papio hamadryas APOL1 was a strong candidate for transgenic animal production based on its trypanosome-killing capacity, ion channel properties, and stability. We generated seven transgenic murine lines based on the P. ha

Nematodes belonging to the Trichuris genus are prevalent soil-transmitted helminths with a worldwide distribution in mammals, while humans are mainly affected in areas with insufficient sanitation such as in Africa, Asia and South America. Traditionally, whipworms infecting primates are referred to Trichuris trichiura, but recent molecular and morphological evidence suggests that more than one species may be able to infect humans and non-human primates. Here, we analyzed the genetic diversity and phylogeny of Trichuris infecting five different non-human primate species kept in captivity using

Rungwecebus kipunji is a recently discovered, critically endangered primate endemic to southern Tanzania. Although phenetically similar to mangabeys, molecular analyses suggest it is more closely related to Papio or possibly descended from an ancient population of baboon-mangabey hybrids. At present, only a single kipunji specimen, an M1-stage juvenile male, is available for study; thus, the cranial morphology of the adult kipunji is unknown. In this study, we used developmental simulation to estimate the adult kipunji's 3D cranial morphology. We examined variation in cercopithecine developmen

We undertook establishing an SPF baboon colony in response to requests from researchers. To enable the widest possible future use of SPF baboons, our aim was to develop an SPF colony of baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) free of 12 target viruses: 5 herpesviruses, 4 retroviruses, simian virus 40, measles, and monkeypox. Infant baboons were removed from their mothers within 24 h of birth and nursery-reared. Groups of 3 to 8 age-matched conspecifics were isolated in separate rooms for 1 y while undergoing repeated testing for target viruses. During the initial 7 y of the SPF program, 171 infants w

The leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) technique was used to measure the T cell-mediated immune response of Epstein-Barr-virus (EBV)-seropositive human donors to antigens associated with B cell lines of simian origin, transformed by simian EBV-like viruses, Herpesvirus papio (HVP), H. pan, H. gorilla and H. pongo. Extracts of cell lines carrying three of the four simian viruses (from gorilla, chimpanzee and orangutan) induced a positive LMI response, whereas lines carrying baboon-derived HVP were ineffective. None of the simian virus-transformed lines elicited an LMI reaction in human EBV-se

The abdominal pregnancy is a rare, but life threatening complication of ectopic embryo implantation. Only three cases of abdominal pregnancy have been previously described in primates: in a squirrel monkey, owl monkey and in a rhesus macaque. A 14-year-old wild-caught olive baboon (Papio cynocephalus anubis) was diagnosed at the ultrasound examination with advanced gestational age extrauterine pregnancy. At the initial laparotomy and necropsy the diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy was made on Studdiford's criteria. This case indicates the possibility of developing a model for further study of di

Amebae belonging to the order Leptomyxida are regarded as innocuous soil organisms incapable of infecting mammals. We report here the isolation of a leptomyxid ameba from the brain of a pregnant baboon (Papio sphinx) that died of meningoencephalitis at the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park. By using rabbit anti-leptomyxid serum in the immunofluorescence assay, we have identified the leptomyxid ameba in the brain sections of a number of human encephalitic cases from around the world as well as a few cases of meningoencephalitis in animals in the United States, which suggests that the leptomyxid am

Adult, female baboons (Papio hamadryas) were administered orally once 18 h p.c., either 1.6 mg STS 557 (17 alpha-cyanomethyl-17 beta-hydroxy-estra-4;9(10)-dien-3-one) or 1.6 mg levonorgestrel. Investigations of the bone-marrow cells of these animals showed, compared to untreated controls, no signs of increased chromosome aberrations caused by the substances. The relative frequency of chromosome aberrations were estimated for controls: STS 557: levonorgestrel with 0.60 +/- 0.35 : 0.55 +/- 0.39 : 0.92 +/- 0.46%, respectively. The differences between the three groups investigated in the exact Fis

We review the neurochemical and behavioral profile of the selective gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) uptake inhibitor, (R)-N-(4,4-di-(3-methylthien-2-yl)but-3-enyl) nipecotic acid hydrochloride [tiagabine (TGB), previously termed NNC 05-0328, NO 05-0328, and NO-328], which is currently in phase III clinical trials for epilepsy. TGB is a potent, and specific GABA uptake inhibitor. TGB lacks significant affinity for other neurotransmitter receptor binding sites and/or uptake sites. In electrophysiological experiments in hippocampal slices in culture, TGB prolonged the inhibitory postsynaptic poten

Three stages of macular degeneration associated with diffuse cone-rod dystrophy have been described in a Guinea baboon (P papio) colony. Clinically, the affected animals displayed abnormal behavior associated with decreased vision. Ophthalmoscopically, the lesion in the macula was the only change observable in early cases; retinal vessel attenuation and optic disc pallor were seen only in the advanced cases. The hyperfluorescence of the maculae was the result of loss of pigment in the pigmented epithelium. Electrophysiology supported a cone-rod sequence of this retinal dystrophy. Histologic ex

Detection and tracking of animals is an important first step for automated behavioral studies using videos. Animal tracking is currently done mostly using deep learning frameworks based on keypoints, which show remarkable results in lab settings with fixed cameras, backgrounds, and lighting. However, multi-animal tracking in the wild presents several challenges such as high variability in background and lighting conditions, complex motion, and occlusion. We propose PriMAT, an approach for tracking nonhuman primates in the wild. PriMAT learns to detect and track primates and other objects of in

Dengue virus (DENV) circulates in two distinct transmission cycles: one, termed the sylvatic cycle, is enzootic to canopy-living hosts, including non-human primates and primatophilic mosquitoes, and the other, initiated by spillover from the sylvatic cycle, is endemic to humans and anthropophilic mosquitoes. Transmission dynamics of sylvatic DENV in non-human hosts has not been well characterized, and the identity of reservoir and amplification hosts is still to be determined. We investigated the role of the three common species of monkeys in the Kédougou region of Senegal in the sylvatic tran

The ability of Baboons (papio papio) to distinguish between English words and nonwords has been modeled using a deep learning convolutional network model that simulates a ventral pathway in which lexical representations of different granularity develop. However, given that pigeons (columba livia), whose brain morphology is drastically different, can also be trained to distinguish between English words and nonwords, it appears that a less species-specific learning algorithm may be required to explain this behavior. Accordingly, we examined whether the learning model of Rescorla and Wagner, whic
