Can paraspinal muscle degeneration be a reason for refractures after percutaneous kyphoplasty? A magnetic resonance imaging observation.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral augmentation (VA) techniques are used to treat acute osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). However, the incidence of recurrent vertebral fractures after VA is controversial. Various factors have been discussed in the literature, but no convincing study on the quality of paraspinal muscles has been reported. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the changes in paraspinal muscles and discuss the relationship between paraspinal muscle degeneration and vertebral refractures after percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP). METHODS: This retrospective study was cond

Quantifying paraspinal muscle tone and stiffness in young adults with chronic low back pain: a reliability study.

The reliability of a handheld myotonometer when used in a clinical setting to assess paraspinal muscle mechanical properties is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the between-session intra-rater reliability of a handheld myotonometer in young adults with low back pain (LBP) in a clinical environment. One assessor recorded lumbar paraspinal muscle tone and stiffness in an outpatient department on two occasions. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), smallest real difference (SRD) and Bland-Altman analysis were conducted to assess reliability. Th

Association between paraspinal muscle morphology, clinical symptoms and functional status in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis.

PURPOSE: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a disabling condition associated with narrowing of the spinal canal or vertebral foramina. Paraspinal muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration have been reported in patients with chronic LBP and disc herniation. However, very few imaging studies have examined paraspinal muscle morphology and composition in patients with LSS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of paraspinal muscle size, composition and asymmetry with functional status in patients with LSS. METHODS: Thirty-six patients diagnosed with LSS at L4-L5 with neurogenic cl

Indirect Neuromonitoring of the Spinal Cord by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of the Paraspinous Thoracic and Lumbar Muscles in Aortic Surgery.

Paraplegia remains the most devastating complication of open and endovascular thoracic/thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAA/A) repair. However, the assessment of currently available neuromonitoring modalities remains challenging and difficult to interpret. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been introduced as a strategy for noninvasive, real-time monitoring of the paraspinous collateral network (CN) to detect potential spinal cord ischemia at our institution. Prior to TAA/A repair, a cerebrospinal fluid catheter is placed and four NIRS optodes are bilaterally positioned on the patient's ba

Evaluation of the lumbar spine in patients with glycogen storage disease: CT demonstration of patterns of paraspinal muscle atrophy.

CT studies of the lumbar spine were performed in 19 patients with glycogen storage disease. Nine of 10 patients with McArdle's disease and seven of nine patients with acid maltase deficiency demonstrated posterior paraspinal muscle atrophy out of proportion to their ages. In addition, the psoas muscles were spared in all 10 patients with McArdle's disease and were involved with atrophy in seven of the nine patients with acid maltase deficiency. We conclude that when patients with low back pain-or asymptomatic patients-demonstrate otherwise unexplained atrophy of the paraspinal muscles the diag
