Blood glucose control by direct islet innervation.

Glucose tends to be elevated in situations of stress and an increase in plasma glucagon is an important cause. The rapidity of the glucagon rise in stress suggests a nervous mechanism. Electron microscopy has shown that the alpha and beta cells of the pancreas have, in fact, both an adrenergic and cholinergic innervation. Splanchnic-nerve stimulation has been shown in animals to cause a massive release of glucagon and marked inhibition of insulin. The glucagon response to hypoglycemia, on the other hand, appears to be significantly controlled by the parasympathetic system and, in man, is great

Music therapy and vagally mediated heart rate variability: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: An increasing body of evidence supports the use of music therapy for improving health and wellbeing. In parallel, there has also been a rising interest in the use of biomarkers to assess its impact. One such biomarker is vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), which is a non-invasive measure of cardiac parasympathetic nervous system activity. However, the influence of music therapy on vmHRV is currently unclear. METHODS: A literature search was performed in December 2023/January 2024 and updated in March 2025. Data related to vmHRV was extracted and risk of bias was evalu

The Vagus Nerve in the Neuro-Immune Axis: Implications in the Pathology of the Gastrointestinal Tract.

The vagus nerve (VN) is the longest nerve of the organism and a major component of the parasympathetic nervous system which constitutes the autonomic nervous system (ANS), with the sympathetic nervous system. There is classically an equilibrium between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems which is responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis. An imbalance of the ANS is observed in various pathologic conditions. The VN, a mixed nerve with 4/5 afferent and 1/5 efferent fibers, is a key component of the neuro-immune and brain-gut axes through a bidirectional communication between

An investigation of the vascular organisation of the canine submandibular gland.

It is known that parasympathetic nerve stimulation elevates venous pressure in the dog submandibular gland, and that the venous pressure wave is transformed to that of the arterial pulse. The vascular arrangements and histological characteristics of the dog submandibular gland were therefore examined to establish which anatomical structures are responsible for the change in venous pressure during salivation induced by parasympathetic stimulation. The acinar and ductal circulations were found to be arranged in parallel and arteriovenous anastomoses were identified in both. Microsphere injection

Trigger activation of the paradoxical salivatory response to atropine in the parasympathetically denervated human parotid gland.

The author describes a specific intermediate condition of the response to atropine during the 2nd stage of denervation of the human parotid gland. Of the entire cohort of 110 subjects, some 20 subjects have been observed systematically. They demonstrated an extremely intense atropine salivation that followed an additional trigger activation, namely food or acid irritation of the mouth mucosa. The initial phase of such a stimulation was characterized by a sharp, explosive increase in secretion. The following conclusions have been inferred: (1) in the 2nd stage of parasympathetic denervation of

Neuropeptides and nasal secretion.

The nasal mucosa is innervated by the sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic nervous systems. Nociceptive sensory nerves are stimulated by mucosal injury, inhalation of irritants, or mast cell degranulation and release of the calcitonin gene-related peptide, the tachykinins substance P and neurokinin A, and other peptides by the axon response mechanism. Sensory nerve stimulation initiates systemic reflexes, such as the sneeze, and central parasympathetic reflexes which release acetylcholine, vasoactive intestinal peptide, and other peptides and lead to glandular secretion. In concert, these

Met5-enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the major salivary glands of the rat: evidence for both sympathetic and parasympathetic origin.

The localization of the proenkephalin A-derived octapeptide, Met5-enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8 (MEAGL), was studied in the major salivary glands of Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats with the indirect immunofluorescence method. MEAGL-immunoreactive nerve fibers were found around the acini, along intra- and interlobular salivary ducts and in close contact with blood vessels. In the parotid and submandibular glands tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity was observed in nerve fibers around the acini, in association with intra- and interlobular salivary ducts and around blood vessels, while in the su

Parasympathetic activity increases with digital microvascular damage and vascular endothelial growth factor in systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: The imbalance between angiogenic and angiostatic factors with derangement of the microvasculature are hallmarks of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Raynaud's phenomenon in SSc probably is due to the impaired neuroendothelial control mechanisms between vasoconstriction and vasodilatation. The aim of this study is to evaluate autonomic nervous system function using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis and to correlate with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). METHODS: Twenty-seven SSc patients were enrolled. HRV was measured and markers of global sympathetic and parasympathetic syst

Conceptualization of a Parasympathetic Endocrine System.

We here propose a parasympathetic endocrine system (PES) comprised of circulating peptides released from secretory cells in the gut, significantly modulated by vagal projections from the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). While most of these gut peptides mediate well-described satiety and digestive effects that increase parasympathetic control of digestion (Lee et al., 1994; Gutzwiller et al., 1999; Klok et al., 2007), they also have actions that are far-reaching and increase parasympathetic signaling broadly throughout the body. The actions beyond satiety that peptides like somatostatin

Heart-Brain Axis: Effects of Neurologic Injury on Cardiovascular Function.

A complex interaction exists between the nervous and cardiovascular systems. A large network of cortical and subcortical brain regions control cardiovascular function via the sympathetic and parasympathetic outflow. A dysfunction in one system may lead to changes in the function of the other. The effects of cardiovascular disease on the nervous system have been widely studied; however, our understanding of the effects of neurological disorders on the cardiovascular system has only expanded in the past 2 decades. Various pathologies of the nervous system can lead to a wide range of alterations

Autonomic nervous system function in chronic hypotension associated with Bartter and Gitelman syndromes.

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction has a major role in the blood pressure (BP) decrease associated with orthostatic hypotension and syncope. The clinical picture of Bartter and Gitelman syndromes includes reduced extracellular fluid volume and normotension or hypotension, but no study has explored autonomic nervous system status in patients with hypotensive episodes associated with these diseases. We tested sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system function in 4 patients with Bartter and Gitelman syndromes with chronic hypotension. Each patient underwent a battery of autonomic reflex te

Premature ventricular contractions activate vagal afferents and alter autonomic tone: implications for premature ventricular contraction-induced cardiomyopathy.

Mechanisms behind development of premature ventricular contraction (PVC)-induced cardiomyopathy remain unclear. PVCs may adversely modulate the autonomic nervous system to promote development of heart failure. Afferent neurons in the inferior vagal (nodose) ganglia transduce cardiac activity and modulate parasympathetic output. Effects of PVCs on cardiac parasympathetic efferent and vagal afferent neurotransmission are unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of PVCs on vagal afferent neurotransmission and compare these effects with a known powerful autonomic modulator, myoca

Detection of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy using exercise testing in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: This study investigated autonomic nervous system function in subjects with diabetes during exercise and recovery. METHODS: Eighteen type 2 diabetics (age 55±2 years) and twenty healthy controls (age 51±1 years) underwent two 16-min bicycle submaximal ECG stress tests followed by 45 min of recovery. During session #2, atropine (0.04 mg/kg) was administered at peak exercise, and the final two minutes of exercise and entire recovery occurred under parasympathetic blockade. Plasma catecholamines were measured throughout. Parasympathetic effect was defined as the difference between a measure

Decreasing parasympathetic tone activity and proarrhythmic effect after radiofrequency catheter ablation--differences in ablation site.

Holter ECG was used to evaluate changes in heart rate variability (HRV), indicators of the autonomic nervous system, and arrhythmia before and after radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation in patients with symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia. Ablation targets in 43 patients included the atrioventricular (AV) nodal pathway (AVNRT, n = 17), a right free wall accessory pathway (n = 10), a septal accessory pathway (n = 6), and a left free wall accessory pathway (n = 10). The High frequency component (0.15 - 0.40 Hz) or pNN50 of HRV analysis, indicating parasympathetic activity, significantly de

Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System Activation and Metabolic Profile in Young Children: The ABCD Study.

BACKGROUND: In adults, increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic nervous system activity are associated with a less favorable metabolic profile. Whether this is already determined at early age is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between autonomic nervous system activation and metabolic profile and its components in children at age of 5-6 years. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from an apparently healthy population (within the ABCD study) were collected at age 5-6 years in 1540 children. Heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; parasympathetic activity)

Selective Induction of Human Autonomic Neurons Enables Precise Control of Cardiomyocyte Beating.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates tissue homeostasis and remodelling through antagonistic effects of noradrenergic sympathetic and cholinergic parasympathetic signalling. Despite numerous reports on the induction of sympathetic neurons from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), no induction methods have effectively derived cholinergic parasympathetic neurons from hPSCs. Considering the antagonistic effects of noradrenergic and cholinergic inputs on target organs, both sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons are expected to be induced. This study aimed to develop a stepwise chemical

Relationships of autonomic dysfunction with disease severity and neuropathic pain features in fibromyalgia: is it really a sympathetically maintained neuropathic pain?

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia (FM) involves many mechanisms including central nervous system sensitization theory, autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, and recently small fiber neuropathy. While the small fiber neuropathy itself can cause ANS dysfunction and neuropathic pain (NP), it is still unknown whether ANS problems have an association with severity of disease and NP in patients with FM. The aim of this study was to evaluate ANS dysfunction in FM patients and to explore possible associations of ANS dysfunction with disease severity and NP. METHODS: Twenty-nine FM
