Viral meningitis in Sudanese children: Differentiation, etiology and review of literature.

Diagnosis of viral meningitis (VM) is uncommon practice in Sudan and there is no local viral etiological map. We therefore intended to differentiate VM using standardized clinical codes and determine the involvement of herpes simplex virus types-1 and 2 (HSV-1/2), varicella zoster virus, non-polio human enteroviruses (HEVs), and human parechoviruses in meningeal infections in children in Sudan. This is a cross-sectional hospital-based study. Viral meningitis was differentiated in 503 suspected febrile attendee of Omdurman Hospital for Children following the criteria listed in the Clinical Case

Two-operator real-time ultrasound-guided lumbar puncture in neonates: a case series.

Lumbar puncture (LP) is a common but challenging procedure in neonates, with reported high rates of failure and traumatic taps. Real-time ultrasound (US) guidance may improve accuracy and safety, but evidence in the neonatal population remains limited. We retrospectively reviewed five neonates who underwent two-operator real-time US-guided LP in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit between 2023 and 2024. Both static pre-procedural assessment and dynamic real-time guidance were applied. Demographic data, operator experience, procedural details, and outcomes were collected. The median gestati

Towards public health surveillance of intensive care services in NSW, Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Outbreaks of known and novel pathogens causing very severe illness increase the risk to public health in a globalised community and alarm the public. Intensive care units (ICUs) may be an underused setting for public health surveillance. This study investigates the electronic Record for Intensive Care (eRIC), an electronic clinical information and management system being developed for New South Wales ICUs, and its surveillance opportunity offerings. METHODS: The surveillance benefits being introduced by the eRIC were evaluated through consultation with stakeholders and the eRIC pr

Seasonal dynamics and genetic diversity of non-polio enteroviruses in hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis in Pune, India.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children is primarily associated with pathogens such as Human Rotavirus A (HRVA), Human norovirus (HNoV), Human adenovirus (HAdV), Human astrovirus (HAstV), Human parechovirus (HPeV) and increasingly, Human enteroviruses (EVs). EVs are non-enveloped RNA viruses belonging to the Picornaviridae family, comprising over 100 subtypes classified into four species. Despite their clinical relevance, the prevalence of EVs in AGE remains underexplored in India, resulting in limited data on their epidemiology and molecular diversity. A total of 450 stool samples were collec

Viruses in Vietnamese Patients Presenting with Community-Acquired Sepsis of Unknown Cause.

Community-acquired (CA) sepsis is a major public health problem worldwide, yet the etiology remains unknown for >50% of the patients. Here we applied metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) to characterize the human virome in 492 clinical samples (384 sera, 92 pooled nasal and throat swabs, 10 stools, and 6 cerebrospinal fluid samples) from 386 patients (213 adults and 173 children) presenting with CA sepsis who were recruited from 6 hospitals across Vietnam between 2013 and 2015. Specific monoplex PCRs were used subsequently to confirm the presence of viral sequences detected by mNGS. W

Respiratory Virus Detection and Clinical Diagnosis in Children Attending Day Care.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viruses often have been studied in children with respiratory tract infection (RTI), but less knowledge exists about viruses in asymptomatic children. We have studied the occurrence of a broad panel of respiratory viruses in apparently healthy children attending day care, taking into account the influence of possible confounding factors, such as age, clinical signs of respiratory tract infection (RTI), location (day-care section) and season. METHODS: We have studied 161 children in two day-care centers, each with separate sections for younger and older children, during

Serological survey of rodent-borne viruses in Finnish field voles.

In northern Europe, rodent populations display cyclic density fluctuations that can be correlated with the human incidence of zoonotic diseases they spread. During density peaks, field voles (Microtus agrestis) become one of the most abundant rodent species in northern Europe, yet little is known of the viruses they host. We screened 709 field voles, trapped from 14 sites over 3 years, for antibodies against four rodent-borne, potentially zoonotic viruses or virus groups-hantaviruses, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), Ljungan virus (LV), and orthopoxviruses (OPV). Antibodies against a

Emerging viral infections.

Unique disorders appear episodically in human populations and cause life-threatening systemic or neurological disease. Historical examples of such disorders include von Economo encephalitis, a disorder of presumed viral etiology; acquired immune deficiency syndrome, caused by the human immunodeficiency virus; and severe acute respiratory syndrome, caused by a member of the coronavirus family. This article describes the factors that contribute to the emergence of infectious diseases and focuses on selected recent examples of emerging viral infections that can affect the nervous system of infant

Ljungan virus: a commentary on its association with fetal and infant morbidity and mortality in animals and humans.

Epidemiologic and experimental data support the notion that Ljungan virus (LV), endemic in some rodent populations in Sweden, Denmark, and the United States, can cause morbidity and mortality in animals and humans. LV infection can cause type I diabetes mellitus, myocarditis, and encephalitis in bank voles and experimental mice, and lemmings. Mouse dams infected with LV experience high rates of stillbirth that may persist across generations, and their fetuses may develop cranial, brain, and limb malformations. In humans, epidemiologic and serologic data suggest that LV infection correlates wit
