Korean American parental depressive symptoms and parental acceptance-rejection and control.

This study explored the relationships between Korean American parental depressive symptoms and parenting in 64 mothers and 35 fathers of adolescents 11 to 17 years of age. Using multiple regression after controlling for family income, both parents' depressive symptoms were found to significantly influence their acceptance and rejection behaviors, explaining 14% of variance in the mother model and 47% of variance in the father model. Specifically, maternal depressive symptoms were found to significantly positively influence their hostility. Paternal depressive symptoms were found to significant

Parental marital disruption, family type, and transfers to disabled elderly parents.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of parental marital status, marital history, and family type on intergenerational living arrangements and adult children's time and cash transfers to their unpartnered disabled elderly parents. METHODS: We used data from the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old survey to estimate the joint probabilities that an adult child provides time and/or cash transfers to a parent and to analyze a five-level categorical variable capturing parent-child living arrangements. RESULT: The estimates suggest significant detrimental

The development of an instrument to measure the effects of a parent's chronic illness on parenting tasks.

An instrument was developed to assess the impact of chronic illness on the performance of parenting tasks (e.g., lifting, feeding, transporting, etc.). Little research on the affect of illness in general on the performance of parenting tasks is in the literature. Mothers with narcolepsy (n = 20) were used as the sample for this pilot study along with a comparison of mothers without a chronic illness (n = 20). Mothers were matched by the age and sex of the oldest child. The age groups of childhood and adolescence from the Parenting Tasks Index (PTI) were used in this study. Good reliability and

Perceived parental characteristics and reports of early parental deprivation in agoraphobic patients.

It is commonly believed that patients with agoraphobia have suffered more frequently from aberrant family experiences in childhood. Some authors have described an excess of parental deprivation and others have incriminated parental overprotectiveness. Recent studies have failed to confirm these impressions but, instead, find that agoraphobic patients recall deficits in parental warmth and care during their early years. This report of a Sydney case-control study adds support to the view that parental overprotectiveness in isolation is unlikely to place the child at greater risk of developing ag

A Scoping Review of Interventions Designed to Support Parents With Mental Illness That Would Be Appropriate for Parents With Psychosis.

The experience of psychosis can present additional difficulties for parents, over and above the normal challenges of parenting. Although there is evidence about parenting interventions specifically targeted at parents with affective disorders, anxiety, and borderline personality disorder, there is currently limited evidence for parents with psychotic disorders. It is not yet known what, if any, interventions exist for this population, or what kinds of evaluations have been conducted. To address this, we conducted a scoping review to determine (1) what parenting interventions have been develope

What Matters to Parents Regarding Immunization of Their Children: Systematic Analysis of Expert Advice to Parents in an Internet Forum.

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization announced vaccine hesitancy among the top 10 threats to global health in 2019. While the number of persons looking for information on health topics on the internet is increasing, information regarding immunization on the internet is often inaccurate and misleading. We aimed to determine the kind of information parents seek on the internet for decision-making regarding immunizations for their children. METHODS: We investigated threads of an internet vaccine forum, where parents can get personalized advice from a vaccine expert, with regard to the types of

Marfan syndrome in childhood: parents' perspectives of the impact on daily functioning of children, parents and family; a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a heritable connective tissue disease caused by a defect in FBN1. The diagnosis is based on the revised Ghent criteria. The main features involve the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, ophthalmic, pulmonary systems and facial features. Although the clinical manifestations of MFS in children are thoroughly addressed in several studies, literature on the impact of MFS on daily functioning is restricted to pediatric advice on sports and leisure participation. Therefore, the full impact of MFS on daily functioning remains unclear. The aim of this qualitative stud

Learning from deaths: Parents' Active Role and ENgagement in The review of their Stillbirth/perinatal death (the PARENTS 1 study).

BACKGROUND: Following a perinatal death, a formal standardised multi-disciplinary review should take place, to learn from the death of a baby and facilitate improvements in future care. It has been recommended that bereaved parents should be offered the opportunity to give feedback on the care they have received and integrate this feedback into the perinatal mortality review process. However, the MBRRACE-UK Perinatal Confidential Enquiry (2015) found that only one in 20 cases parental concerns were included in the review. Although guidance suggests parental opinion should be sought, little evi

Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy Among Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Parents of Children With Non-Autism Developmental Delays.

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be at greater risk for developing antivaccine beliefs that lead to vaccine delays and/or refusals for their children. We investigated current parental vaccine hesitancy, parents' beliefs about causes of children's developmental delays, and children's vaccination histories among parents of children with ASD or non-ASD developmental delays. Data were analyzed from 89/511 parents (17.4%) who completed the Parent Attitudes About Childhood Vaccines questionnaire and the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire; 46.1% had childhood vaccinat

Headspace for parents: qualitative report investigating the use of a mindfulness-based app for managing parents' stress during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Stress can compromise parental well-being and may contribute to harsh and critical parenting styles, which are in turn associated with children's conduct problems. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related restrictions are likely to have exacerbated parental stress as, for many, UK-based family life was altered considerably. Mindfulness has been demonstrated to improve stress management and emotion regulation when delivered to parents in person, however, more accessible online interventions are under-researched. AIMS: To provide preliminary data on family well-being and parent-c

How not to tell parents about their child's new diagnosis of congenital heart disease: an Internet survey of 841 parents.

An online survey for parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) was developed to study the perceptions and experiences of parents when receiving the diagnosis. The survey was distributed to online support groups. A total of 841 responses from parents of children with CHD in the United States were received over a 4-week period in 2010. The authors hypothesized that the counseling and demeanor of the pediatric cardiologist (PC) may be important factors in determining whether parents of children with CHD seek second opinions, and that the terminology used in counseling may be variabl

Parental knowledge of child sexual abuse, parent-child communication, and protective parenting behaviors: A cross-sectional multisite study in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse is a major child protection concern. Parents play an important preventive role through awareness, communication with children, and protective parenting practices. Evidence from Egypt is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations among parental knowledge of child sexual abuse, parent-child communication, and protective parenting behaviors among Egyptian parents of school-aged children, and explored whether parent-child communication statistically mediated the association between knowledge and protective behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional multisite d

Exploring the role of parental guilt in the association between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder among parents of children diagnosed with cancer.

The diagnosis of childhood cancer poses a profound psychological crisis for parents, compelling them to reevaluate and adapt their parental roles under extreme uncertainty. Guided by transactional stress theory, this study explored parental guilt as a mediator between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder among parents of children with cancer. A sample of 218 Israeli parents of children with cancer completed self-report questionnaires. Parental guilt was found to fully mediate the association between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder, such that higher levels of parental s

Perceived Parent Needs for Improving Parent Participation in School-Based Therapies for Children with Disabilities Using the Parent-Therapist Partnership Survey.

Rehabilitative and habilitative therapies can help children with disabilities increase independence and overall wellbeing. However, children and their caregivers face many barriers to accessing these therapies and often rely on the school for therapy access. Given the limited resources available within the special education system, increasing parent involvement in special education therapies could improve service delivery. However, providers must first understand what parents need to participate in therapies before attempting to engage families. 217 parents completed an online survey consistin
