Surgical Treatment of Ossified Cephalhematoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Cephalhematoma is more frequently associated with hard labor of infancy, but the incidence of ossified cephalhematoma is a rare clinical entity. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report presents a 2-month-old infant with an ossified cephalhematoma who was treated successfully by excision. CONCLUSIONS: Cephalhematoma goes to an ossification process rather than a calcification one. Surgery should be used to shave off the ossified cephalhematoma.

Further observations on the fate of pedicle osteocutaneous grafts.

Recent work has shown that pedicle osteocutaneous grafts retain their viability and participate actively in the restructuring of transferred bone. The present study investigates two aspects of this process: (1) whether or not healthy recipient bone is needed for the survival of these grafts and (2) the degree of periosteal involvement in osteogenesis. Six adult dogs were used. Pedicle osteocutaneous grafts were constructed using the anterior table of the frontal sinus. Rotation of these flaps allowed implantation of the bone transplant into the ipsilateral parietal muscle. Free bone grafts wer

An unusual patterned injury from homicidal craniocerebral impalement with a metal chair leg.

A 26-year-old young man died shortly after he had suffered craniocerebral impalement from a metal chair leg during an affray at an airport bar. At autopsy a 25 mm diameter circular wound was present in the left parietal region with protruding brain tissue. Death was due to craniocerebral trauma from a penetrating injury to the head. Examination of the chair used in the assault showed a metal chair with smeared blood on the front right leg that matched the blood group of the decedent. The fatal wound had been inflicted by the assailant with the victim leaning forward while kneeling on the floor

Intracranial Epidural Metastases of Adrenal Pheochromocytoma: A Rare Entity.

BACKGROUND: Pheochromocytomas are uncommon neuroendocrine tumors of the adrenal medulla. Malignant behavior is seen in approximately 10% of these lesions, evidenced by distant metastasis to sites without chromaffin tissue. Here we report a rare case of intracranial epidural metastases of an adrenal pheochromocytoma in a 24-year-old man. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient originally presented at age 10 years with adrenal pheochromocytoma and subsequently developed extensive metastatic bone and lung disease. He was monitored in the intervening years until recent imaging demonstrated an enlarging rig

Evidence of skull bone translocator protein overexpression linked to multiple sclerosis progression.

The skull bone marrow contributes to brain immune homeostasis via recently discovered skull-meningeal channels, enabling the bidirectional trafficking of immune cells between skull bone and underlying dura mater. In multiple sclerosis, autoreactive T cells migrate to the bone marrow and shift its haematopoietic output towards myeloid differentiation, contributing to disease progression. However, the role of the skull bone marrow in multiple sclerosis pathophysiology, and its relationship to brain damage and clinical disability remain largely unexplored. We utilized simultaneous MR-PET with the

Intradiploic Epidermoid Cyst Of The Skull.

Intradiploic epidermoid cyst is an uncommon, benign, slow growing neoplasm that occurs between two tables of cranial bones and constitute 0.4% of all cranial epidermoid. It usually occurs due to the entrapped ectodermal embyronal remnants within the skull bones or rarely secondary to trauma. Pre-operative diagnosis on the basis of radiologic investigations is difficult. Complete surgically excision is usually required in order to prevent complications like super infection, intracranial rupture with pneumocephalus and rarely malignant degeneration. We are presenting a case of incompletely resec

[Findings of the syphilis lesions in the skulls from the "Broumov Ossuary"].

Syphilis is a treponematosis clinically characterized by a primary lesion, a secondary rash affecting the skin and the mucous membranes and late lesions affecting cardiovascular and central nervous systems, viscera and bones. Off all the skeletal lesions, the most characteristic are those of the skull, most commonly affecting frontal and parietal bones and nasal and palatal region. The collection of 647 adult skulls of both sexes and 98 child and adolescent skulls from the "Broumov Ossuary" (13th - 18th century) was examined for the presence of the bone syphilis lesions. Seven cases of the gum

Diploic epidermoid cyst associated with focal brain pseudohypertrophy.

We present an 82-year-old woman, admitted for generalized status epilepticus, showing an osteolytic lesion of the right parietal bone associated with underlying focal brain pseudohypertrophy. A radiological diagnosis of diploic epidermoid cyst based on MRI characteristics was made. The aspect of focal brain pseudohypertrophy was probably caused by direct involvement of the underlying meningeal structures preventing the brain parenchyma locally from being retracted (i.e., retraction due to age-related brain atrophy). This aspect of focal brain pseudohypertrophy can potentially be seen in all ch

Neuropathology and craniofacial lesions of osteopetrotic Red Angus calves.

Inherited osteopetrosis was identified in cattle herds in Wyoming, Nebraska, and Missouri in 2008 to 2010. Ten affected Red Angus calves were examined to characterize lesions in brain, teeth, and skull. Six affected aborted or stillborn calves were homozygous for the recently characterized deletion mutation in SLC4A2. Four affected calves were heterozygous for the SLC4A2 mutation and survived 1 to 7 days after birth. Gross lesions were similar in all 10 calves. Brains were rectangular and dorsoventrally compressed, with concave depressions in the parietal cortex owing to thickened parietal bon

[Solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst; report of a case].

We report a rare case of a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the right 4th rib. A 29-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography (CT) demonstrated the lesion mass to be located in the area of the right 4th rib. Bone scintigram revealed a hot spot in the right 4th rib. The right 4th rib was resected en bloc with the parietal pleura, and adjacent intercostal muscles via right anterior thoracotomy. Postoperative pathological evaluation was consistent with a solid variant of ABC.

Wide sutures and large fontanels in the newborn.

Newborn infants with wide cranial sutures and large anterior fontanels, but having normal head circumferences, were prospectively studied and compared with a group of normal controls. The study group with wide sutures was composed of two different groups--one with good calcification of the calvaria, fairly large anterior fontanels, and no Wormian bones; and another with distinct parietal prominences, very large anterior and posterior fontanels with prolonged patency, poor initial calcification of the calvaria, and Wormian bones. Normal head growth and physical and mental development were obser

[Reconstruction of the orbital walls by autologous calvarial transplants].

This article reports on the experience gained with outer table calvarial bone grafts used for the reconstruction of the bony orbital walls in 43 patients. The transplants were harvested in the parietal area above the non-dominant hemisphere. Morbidity and complication rate at the harvest site were extremely low. In all patients the grafts became uneventfully incorporated.

Congenital biparietal foramina presenting with multiple concussions.

We report a man with biparietal foramina secondary to Potocki-Shaffer syndrome. This is due to incomplete ossification of parietal bones secondary to haploinsuffiency of ALX4 gene. He presented with multiple episodes of concussion following minimal head trauma. Cranioplasty was performed to close the skull defects with the aim of preventing further concussion and permanent traumatic brain injury.

Scanning electron microscope analysis of gunshot defects to bone: an underutilized source of information on ballistic trauma.

Recent years have seen increasing involvement by forensic anthropologists in the interpretation of skeletal trauma. With regard to ballistic injuries, there is now a large literature detailing gross features of such trauma; however, less attention has been given to microscopic characteristics. This article presents analysis of experimentally induced gunshot trauma in animal bone (Bos taurus scapulae) using full metal jacket (FMJ), soft point (SP), and captive bolt projectiles. The results were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additional analysis was conducted on a purported p

Strip ostectomy and radical ostectomy in the treatment of craniosynostosis. An experimental animal study.

In an experimental animal study using rabbits, growth phenomena were simulated which are comparable to craniosynostosis in humans. The radiological and histological findings after surgical management of these artificial craniosynostosis by means of strip ostectomy or radical ostectomy were compared with the findings obtained in control animals. Following strip ostectomy, bone defects were rapidly filled by the formation of suture-like structures. After radical ostectomy, structures consisting of connective tissue dispersed among islands of ossification were preserved over a considerable period

Capillary Venous Malformation With Secondary Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of Temporal Bone.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) arising from vascular malformation are extremely rare, and none have been reported in the literature in English till now. We report a very rare case of secondary ABC of left temporal bone in a 5-year-old Caucasian boy who presented with a left sudden facial palsy associated with a painless non-tender mass of the left temporo-parietal region. The computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features were suggestive of ABC secondary to a capillary venous malformation, with concurrent involvement of the squamous, mastoid, and petrous portions of the t

Chondroblastoma of the skull and facial bones.

A series of 30 chondroblastomas was reviewed: 21 had occurred in the lateral part of the temporal bone, 6 in the mandible, 1 in the parietal bone, and 2 in the region that included the temporal bone and mandible. Of the 30 patients in the series, 20 were males and 9 were females; the sex of 1 patient was not stated. The ages of 29 patients ranged from 2 years 11 months to 70 years (mean, 43.5 years). Radiologic findings were not suggestive of a specific diagnosis, although the lesions appeared to be benign. Histologically, most tumors were classic chondroblastomas. However, some showed aneurys
