Avian cryptococcosis.

Clinical and laboratory findings in 15 unreported cases of avian cryptococcosis from Australia were collated and contrasted with 11 cases recorded in the literature. Cryptococcus species produced localized invasive disease of the upper respiratory tract of captive parrots living in Australia. This resulted in signs referable to mycotic rhinitis or to involvement of structures contiguous with the nasal cavity, such as the beak, sinuses, choana, retrobulbar space and palate. Parrots of widely differing ages were affected and of the seven birds for which sex was determinable, six were male. Crypt

Eye lesions in pet birds.

Amongst eye lesions in birds that died in quarantine, cataracts were the most common disorders (37/241, 15.4%), being prevalent in the annular pads of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva aestiva) and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). The incidence in male birds was more than twice that in females. Deposition of crystals, mostly in the cornea, was the second most frequent lesion (21/293, 8.7%), mainly found in cockatiels, parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis), Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva aestiva), budgerigars and finches (Poephila gouldiae gouldiae)

Transsinus Pinning to Correct Lateral Deviation of the Upper Beak in Juvenile Macaws.

Lateral deviation of the upper beak ("scissor beak" or "wry beak") is a common malocclusion in many species of birds but appears to be a common presentation in macaws (Ara species). This article describes transsinus pinning, a procedure in which a pin is passed through the frontal sinuses, turned parallel to the upper beak, and attached to the tip of the beak with an orthodontic rubber band to provide constant tension on the beak as it grows. The tension of the rubber band is maintained until the beak is considered straight. The results of 16 cases in which this beak-straightening procedure wa

Variation in Plumage Coloration of Rosy-Faced Lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis): Links to Sex, Age, Nutritional Condition, Viral Infection, and Habitat Urbanization.

Expression of vibrant plumage color plays important communication roles in many avian clades, ranging from penguins to passerines, but comparatively less is known about color signals in parrots (order Psittaciformes). We measured variation in coloration from three plumage patches (red face, blue rump, red tail) in an introduced population of rosy-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) in Phoenix, Arizona, USA and examined color differences between the sexes and ages as well as relationships with several indices of quality, including disease presence/absence (infection with beak and feather di

An outbreak of psittacosis due to Chlamydophila psittaci genotype A in a veterinary teaching hospital.

An outbreak of psittacosis in a veterinary teaching hospital was recognized in December 2004. Outbreak management was instituted to evaluate the extent of the outbreak and to determine the avian source. Real-time PCR, serologic testing and sequencing of the ompA gene of Chlamydophila psittaci were performed. Sputum samples from patients, throat-swab samples from exposed students and staff, and faecal specimens from parrots and pigeons were tested. In this outbreak, 34 % (10/29) of the tested individuals were infected. The clinical features of the infection ranged from none to sepsis with multi

Laboratory transmission of Rift Valley fever virus by Phlebotomus duboscqi, Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus sergenti, and Sergentomyia schwetzi (Diptera: Psychodidae).

We examined the potential for Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli), Phlebotomus duboscqi (Neveu-Lemarie), Phlebotomus sergenti (Parrot), and Sergentomyia schwetzi (Adler, Theodor, & Parrot) to transmit Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus. After feeding on hamsters that had been inoculated with RVF virus, P. papatasi, P. sergenti, and S. schwetzi became infected and developed disseminated infections. All P. papatasi and P. duboscqi inoculated with RVF virus developed high-titer infections. In contrast, only 41% of the inoculated S. schwetzi contained detectable virus, and infected individuals contained sig

Compendium of measures to control Chlamydia psittaci infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds (avian chlamydiosis), 2000. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Psittacosis--also known as parrot fever and ornithosis--is spread by a bacterial infection of birds that can cause severe pneumonia and other serious health problems among humans. From 1988 through 1998, 813 cases of psittacosis (infection with Chlamydia psittaci) were reported to CDC, and most resulted from exposure to infected pet birds, usually cockatiels, parakeets, parrots, and macaws. In birds, C. psittaci infection is referred to as avian chlamydiosis (AC). Infected birds shed the bacteria through feces and nasal discharges, and humans become infected from exposure to these materials. T

Early re-examination of chest CT may be unnecessary when patients with psittaci pneumonia at low and intermediate risk on Pneumonia Severity Index present with response to initial treatment.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia parrot pneumonia (CPS) is a rare community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by Chlamydia parrot infection. With the development of metagenomic second-generation sequencing technology (mNGS), its diagnostic rate has improved in recent years. However, there are few clinical studies on Chlamydia parrot pneumonia, especially for patients with low and intermediate pneumonia severity index (PSI), and the necessity of early review of chest computed tomography (CT) is not clear. This study aimed to explore the clinical significance of early review of chest CT in patients with low

Screening and diagnosis of acute and chronic bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis by serum IgG and IgA antibodies to bird antigens with ImmunoCAP®.

BACKGROUND: Bird antigens are some of the most relevant antigens in hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Possible sources of bird antigens are bird breeding, feather products and fertilizer with fowl droppings. For the screening and diagnosis of HP, the measurement of bird-specific antibodies should be standardized. The aim of this study was to clarify the utility of serum IgG (sIgG) and IgA (sIgA) antibodies to bird antigens in screening and diagnosing acute/chronic bird-related HP with ImmunoCAP® in multi-centre clinical research. METHODS: We executed a clinical performance test by conducting

Comparison of Morphological Characteristics, Histological Tissue Structures, and Intestinal Function Among Eight Ornamental Fish Species Under Identical Aquaculture Conditions.

The intestine, particularly the gut microbiota, and the liver play key roles in digestion, nutrient transformation, and immune regulation in fish. However, limited information is available regarding how different ornamental fish species regulate these systems under identical aquaculture conditions. Therefore, this study systematically compared gut microbiota diversity, structural variation, and predicted ecological functions among eight ornamental fish species reared in the same environment, using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing combined with digestive enzyme indices and histological analy

[Severe pneumonia from psittacosis in a bird-keeper].

A 67-year-old man was admitted due to severe pneumonia. Initially he was treated with beta-lactam antibiotics and oxygen. However, he developed respiratory failure and was transferred to the intensive-care unit for mechanical ventilation. He was a bird-keeper who collected many species of exotic birds, including parrots. The diagnosis psittacosis (parrot fever) was confirmed serologically and by PCR on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. PCR techniques lead to rapid diagnosis which allows for early treatment. The initial treatment of atypical pneumonia with ciprofloxacin failed. After the patient wa

The prevalence of Chlamydia psittaci in confiscated Psittacidae in Colombia.

Chlamydia psittaci is a highly zoonotic bacteria distributed worldwide; it is responsible for psittacosis, one of the most important infectious diseases affecting the Psittacidae, mostly parrots. This work was aimed at determining C. psittaci prevalence and genotype in 177 parrots confiscated in Colombia; cloacal swab (166) and faecal (177) samples were analysed from birds confiscated and housed in a Temporary Wildlife Reception Centre (Centro de Reception de Fauna Temporal). Conventional PCR was run on the samples for amplifying the MOMP gene and then the ompA gene. The C. psittaci genotype A

Clinical beak and feather disease virus infection in wild juvenile eastern rosellas of New Zealand; biosecurity implications for wildlife care facilities.

CASE HISTORY: Four juvenile eastern rosellas (Platycercus eximius) were admitted to two separate wildlife care facilities in the Auckland region by members of the public. They had missing or dystrophic wing and tail feathers that rendered them flightless, suggestive of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) infection. Two were subject to euthanasia after failing to re-grow their feathers, with samples taken for histopathology and PCR analysis. Blood samples were obtained from the other two birds at the time of examination, however these individuals were lost to follow up. PATHOLOGICAL AND MOLE

Acute, fatal Sarcocystis falcatula infection in rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri).

Sarcocystosis is an important avian disease that affects several intermediate host species. Birds not endemic from Americas, like Old World psittacine species, appear to be more susceptible to lethal infection than New World psittacine species. The aim of this study was to investigate the sudden death of rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) in an exotic private parrot's aviary. Macroscopically, the most prevalent findings were severe lung congestion, slight superficial myocardial hemorrhagic lesions, enlarged liver and congestion of meningeal vessels. The initial diagnosis of sarcocystos
