World Trade Center fine particulate matter--chemistry and toxic respiratory effects: an overview.

The 11 September 2001 terrorist attack on New York City's World Trade Center (WTC) caused an unprecedented environmental emergency. The collapse of the towers sent a tremendous cloud of crushed building materials and other pollutants into the air of lower Manhattan. In response to the calamity, federal, state, and city environmental authorities and research institutes devoted enormous resources to evaluate the impact of WTC-derived air pollution on public health. Unfortunately, on the day of the disaster, no air-sampling monitors were operating close to the WTC site to characterize and quantif

High levels of airborne ultrafine and fine particulate matter in indoor ice arenas.

The high prevalence of airway dysfunction among ice arena athletes may be related to rink air exposure; in particular, high concentrations of ultrafine and fine particulate matter (0.02-1.0 micro m diameter, PM(1)) from ice resurfacing machines may enhance airway inflammation and hyperreactivity. The purpose of this study was to identify levels of PM(1) emitted from ice resurfacing machines used in indoor ice arenas, and to compare [PM(1)] pre- and post-resurfacing to each other and to outdoor [PM(1)]. Multiple one Hz measurements were recorded on 28 different days as 15-s mean of PM(1).cm(-3)

Childhood respiratory symptoms, hospital admissions, and long-term exposure to airborne particulate matter.

The effects of long-term exposure to air pollution on respiratory symptoms and respiratory hospitalization (for asthma, bronchitis or pneumonia) were assessed in a cross-sectional study of children (ages 7--11 years, N=667) living in a moderately industrialized city in Central Slovakia. Individual health, residence and family history data obtained through the CESAR study were coupled, using Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, with total suspended particulate (TSP) exposure estimates derived from dispersion modeling of almost all local stationary sources. These data were used to a

PRL-3-sensitive cytoskeletal signaling mediates early airway epithelial responses to particulate matter.

BACKGROUND: Airborne particulate matter is a major environmental risk factor for airway disease, but the early molecular events that initiate epithelial dysfunction before overt inflammation remain poorly understood. In particular, the mechanisms by which acute, non-cytotoxic particulate exposure disrupts epithelial structural organization have not been fully defined. METHODS: We used an unbiased phosphoproteomic approach to identify early signaling responses in human bronchial epithelial cells exposed to particulate matter under non-lethal conditions. Phosphatase of regenerating liver-3 (PRL

Associations Between Fine Particulate Matter-Associated Bacteria and Respiratory Tract Microbiota in Pigs.

Environmental health and biosecurity in pig farms and surroundings are increasingly threatened by pathogenic bacteria carried by fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) in enclosed piggeries. However, limited attention has been given to these pathogens and their association with the respiratory microbiome of pigs. Using high-throughput sequencing, we investigated the overall and pathogenic bacterial communities attached to PM2.5 in pig houses, as well as those in the upper (URT) and lower respiratory tracts (LRT) of healthy fattening pigs. Concentrations

Early-life exposure to particulate matter and green spaces: Associations with infant growth.

Early-life exposure to air pollution and green space may influence child growth, but evidence across multiple anthropometric indicators is limited. We examined whether perinatal exposures to particulate matter (PM) and residential green space are associated with longitudinal changes in body mass index (BMI), length, and head circumference (HC). In 119,110 Flemish children, BMI-, length-, and HC-for-age z-scores were derived from well-baby clinic data. Perinatal PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were estimated using the RIO detrended-kriging interpolation model. Municipal green space was categorize

The silent intruders: Cardiovascular and pregnancy-related health effects of ultrafine particulate matter.

Ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) is an increasingly important airborne pollutant with distinct physicochemical properties that may enhance its biological reactivity and cardiovascular toxicity. This review provides a critical mechanistic synthesis of current evidence linking UFPM exposure to cardiovascular injury, with particular emphasis on pregnancy-related cardiovascular disorders. Evidence from experimental models, controlled human-exposure studies, and epidemiological investigations indicates that UFPM may contribute to cardiovascular dysfunction through interconnected pathways involvi

Temporal trends in ambient fine particulate matter in Grenada between 2009 and 2022.

Despite its association with significant morbidity and mortality, ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is not robustly monitored in the Caribbean region. To estimate historical PM2.5 concentration trends in Grenada, an island often impacted by Saharan dust storms, a daily time series analysis was conducted using PM2.5 reanalysis data from the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2) as a proxy, due to the absence of reference ground monitoring stations. A multivariate linear regression model was used to evaluate the interactions between MERRA-2 PM2.5 concent

Application of Antioxidant Mixture Prevents Cutaneous "Oxinflammaging" in Subjects Exposed to Particulate Matter.

BACKGROUND: Premature skin aging and the growing incidence of skin conditions are closely linked to daily exposure to environmental agents. Among all air pollutants, particulate matter (PM) is regarded as one of the most aggressive in terms of skin damage, promoting degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components and depletion of the cutaneous antioxidant defense via initiation of oxinflammatory reactions. Moreover, PM can penetrate damaged skin, exacerbating the effect of other pollutants and worsening the symptoms of existing skin conditions. Topical application of antioxidant compounds

Influence of particulate matter air quality on water quality of atmospheric water harvesting.

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is a decentralized water technology that dehumidifies air to provide water. When atmospheric water is condensed, other atmospheric particles and gases can enter the liquid water. For AWH to serve as drinking water, it is necessary to understand how these air constituents interact with water as it condenses and the resulting water quality. The objectives of this research were to determine: i) the variation of measured air and water quality contaminants at two sites, and ii) the extent of interaction between particulate matter concentration in the air and the w

Particulate Matter and Its Molecular Effects on Skin: Implications for Various Skin Diseases.

Particulate matter (PM) is a harmful air pollutant composed of chemicals and metals which affects human health by penetrating both the respiratory system and skin, causing oxidative stress and inflammation. This review investigates the association between PM and skin disease, focusing on the underlying molecular mechanisms and specific disease pathways involved. Studies have shown that PM exposure is positively associated with skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and skin aging. PM-induced oxidative stress damages lipids, proteins, and DNA, impairing cellular functions and

Mobile monitoring reveals the importance of non-vehicular particulate matter sources in London.

This study uses mobile monitoring to gain a better understanding of particulate matter (PM) sources in two areas of Central and Outer London, UK. We find that, unlike emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO + NO2 = NOx), which are elevated in Central London due to the high number of diesel vehicles and congestion, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions are well-controlled. This finding provides evidence for the effectiveness of vehicle particulate filters, supporting the view that their widespread adoption has mitigated PM2.5 emissions, even in the highly dieselized area of Central London. However

Fine particulate matter induces heart defects via AHR/ROS-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress.

Accumulating body of evidence indicates that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is closely associated with congenital heart disease in the offspring, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain to be elucidated. We previously reported that extractable organic matter (EOM) from PM2.5 induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction by activating aromatic hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), leading to heart defects in zebrafish embryos. We hypothesized that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress might be elicited by the excessive ROS production and thereby contribute to the cardiac developmen
