Pasteurella multocida isolation from a tuboovarian abscess. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Human infection with Pasteurella multocida occurs most commonly following a nonhuman animal bite wound or cat scratch, with local skin and soft tissue infections the most frequent posttraumatic manifestations. Genitourinary tract pathology attributable to this organism occurs infrequently, with only one previous reported case of P multocida infection presenting in the form of a tuboovarian abscess. CASE: A 44-year-old woman with an acute abdomen underwent exploratory laparotomy, revealing a right-sided tuboovarian abscess. Following a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral sal

Infective endocarditis due to Pasteurella dagmatis: case report and review.

We report a case of endocarditis due to Pasteurella dagmatis complicated by vertebral osteomyelitis in a 55-year-old former alcoholic woman. To our knowledge, this is the second report of endocarditis attributed to that organism in the English-language medical literature. Rare cases of endocarditis due to other Pasteurella species and their varied clinical features are summarized.

Pasteurella multocida keratitis and corneal laceration from a cat scratch.

A 24-year-old woman was evaluated 12 hours after she sustained a cat scratch to her left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a Seidel-positive corneal laceration with a surrounding dense full-thickness corneal ulcer and severe inflammatory reaction. Since the anterior chamber was well formed, it was decided not to repair the laceration on an emergency basis. She was initially treated with intensive topical fortified tobramycin and vancomycin, and intravenous gentamicin and clindamycin. Cultures of the corneal ulcer revealed Pasteurella multocida and the antibiotic regimen was adjusted appropri

Bovine focal proliferative fibrogranulomatous panniculitis (Lechiguana) associated with Pasteurella granulomatis.

In southern Brazil, cattle are affected by a disease known locally as Lechiguana and characterized by large subcutaneous swellings. Eighteen cases were examined clinically; 17 of the cattle had a single swelling, and one had two swellings. In 14 of the 18 cases, the swellings were located over the scapula and adjacent regions. The subcutaneous masses reached maximum dimensions of 45 x 50 cm, with heights above the skin surface of 5-25 cm. Growth was rapid, often taking place in 15 to 60 days. Histologically, all lesions were focal proliferative fibrogranulomatous panniculitis and consisted of

Activation of bovine neutrophils by partially purified Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin.

In this study we developed a new method for the partial purification of Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin by size-exclusion high-performance liquid chromatography. The partially purified leukotoxin had a molecular weight of 104,000, as estimated by using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and reacted on an immunoblot with an antileukotoxin monoclonal antibody. As expected, high concentrations of the leukotoxin were inhibitory or lethal to bovine neutrophils. Incubation of bovine neutrophils with diluted leukotoxin, however, resulted in significant neutrophil activation

Chemotactic response of bovine neutrophils to Pasteurella haemolytica culture fluid.

Bovine neutrophil chemotactic activity was detected in the supernatant fluid of logarithmic phase cultures of P. haemolytica serotype 1. The chemoattractant was produced under culture conditions suitable for P. haemolytica leukotoxin production. An inverse correlation existed between the leukotoxin LC50 and the chemotactic activity in the culture fluid. Elimination of leukotoxin activity by heating, dilution or ultrafiltration, exposed the chemotactic activity in the culture fluid. The chemoattractant was partially resistant to heating (60 degrees C, 30 min), and had an apparent molecular weig

Bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis: effect of vaccination with live Pasteurella species.

Experimental bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis was induced in beef calves by a transthoracic challenge exposure with Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 or P multocida type 3. Challenge exposure lesions were quantified by a lesion scoring system based on size and extension of lesions with larger scores assigned to the more severe lesions. Calves inoculated with live Pasteurella sp by aerosol or parenteral routes developed high serum antibody titers to the homologous organism, as determined by a quantitative fluorometric procedure. Mean lesion scores were approximately 2 to 20 times higher in cont

Antibody titers to Pasteurella haemolytica A1 in Ontario beef cattle.

Indirect bacterial agglutination titers to Pasteurella haemolytica A1 were determined in serum, thoracic, pericardial, or peritoneal fluid from cattle necropsied as part of the Bruce County Beef Project in 1979-80 and 1980-81. Antibody titers were also assayed in serum from 84 calves on entry to feedlots in the fall of 1979. Titers on entry were low compared to antibody levels at necropsy. Cattle which died with pneumonia, in particular those dying of fibrinous pneumonia (shipping fever), had lower levels of antibody to P. haemolytica than did those dying of other causes.

Selection for florfenicol resistance at sub-MIC concentrations in Pasteurella multocida.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat to both human and animal health, and transfer of resistance between these spheres is recognised as a key concern for all species. Selection for resistance at sub-inhibitory antimicrobial concentrations has been characterised for some bacteria-antimicrobial combinations but there is little data from non-laboratory strains, and veterinary antimicrobials and bacterial species. Here, we demonstrate a minimum selective concentration of 0.06 mg/L (1/6 xMIC) for florfenicol in wild-type Pasteurella multocida, through competition experiments between a suscep

Pathological and bacteriological investigations of Pasteurella multocida-induced epididymitis in calves.

Between June 2017 and October 2023, five cases of epididymitis caused by Pasteurella multocida were confirmed in four Japanese Black calves and one Japanese Black-Holstein crossbreed calf across five farms in three prefectures in Japan. Although P. multocida is primarily known to cause respiratory diseases in cattle, its role in reproductive disorders, particularly in epididymitis, has not been extensively studied. Histopathological examination showed pyogranulomatous lesions in the epididymal duct and surrounding areas, consisting of ductal extension, immune cell infiltration, epithelial dege

Bronchoscopic visualization of the inner cavity caused by Pasteurella multocida infection.

We report a 69-year-old man who presented to our hospital with cough and sputum production. He had been in close contact with six domestic cats. He had a smoking history of 40 pack-years and had been in close contact with six domestic cats. A chest computed tomography scan revealed multiple consolidations with cavities in both lung fields. Pasteurella multocida was cultured from his sputum. On bronchoscopic evaluation, the flexible bronchoscope was navigated through the right middle lobe bronchus, which opened inside the cavity, allowing visualization of a spider-web-appearing architecture con

Pasteurella multocida Bacteremia Due to Obstructive Pneumonia in an Immunocompromised Patient.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative pathogen commonly associated with soft tissue infections caused by bites or scratches from household animals. However, P. multocida infections have been reported without prior zoonotic exposure or associated soft tissue or skin infection in immunocompromised individuals. CASE: A 73-year-old patient with history significant for multiple malignancies including lung cancer presented to the emergency department with a fever, chills, and rigor. Patient denied any zoonotic exposure and did not have any soft tissue or skin structure infection. Lab

Signal sequence contributes to the immunogenicity of Pasteurella multocida lipoprotein E.

Recombinant Pasterurella multocida lipoprotein E (PlpE) has been shown to protect against fowl cholera. This study aimed to determine if the signal sequence may contribute to the antigenicity and protective efficacy of recombinant PlpE. A small antigenic domain of PlpE (termed truncated PlpE, tPlpE) was constructed with (SP-tPlpE) or without (tPlpE) the signal sequence and evaluated in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, the HEK-Bule hTLR2 Cells were used to evaluate the activation of NF-kB in the test associated with the stimulation of the SP-tPlpE and tPlpE proteins. When chickens were immunized, c

Immunohistochemical and molecular analysis of Pasteurella multocida in a rabbit with suppurative pleuropneumonia.

A 1-month-old rabbit, imported as a pet by a distributor, died suddenly in the quarantine period in Japan due to suppurative pleuropneumonia. A bacterial isolate from its right lung was identified as Pasteurella multocida serotype A: 11. The isolate was classified as ST204 using the RIRDC scheme of multilocus sequence typing, suggesting that the isolate was genetically related to European isolates of the same sequence type listed in the PubMLST database and not to four other isolates that originated from past imported rabbits. In the immunohistochemical assay, an antiserum recognizing the soma

Sialic acid uptake is necessary for virulence of Pasteurella multocida in turkeys.

Many pathogenic bacteria employ systems to incorporate sialic acid into their membranes as a means of protection against host defense mechanisms. In Pasteurella multocida, an opportunistic pathogen which causes diseases of economic importance in a wide range of animal species, sialic acid uptake plays a role in a mouse model of systemic pasteurellosis. To further investigate the importance of sialic acid uptake in pathogenesis, sialic acid uptake mutants of an avian strain of P. multocida P-1059 (A:3) were constructed, characterized, and an in-frame sialic acid uptake deletion mutant was asses
